Raider (Shiba Inu Mix)

Raider is 5 months old. He is a Shiba Inu mix, possibly Chihuahua. I adopted him.

He likes to play fetch, run really fast, go on walks and cuddle with mama.

He's the cutest puppy I know!

Salvage Wooden Beads from Beaded Car Seats

Do you remember the beaded car seats that were popular quite some years ago? My tip is for using the beads. I bought a couple of the seats just to tear apart for my crafts, and still have a good supply. Perhaps you have some in your storage area. They are great for using as buttons on the ever popular fingertip towels. I also use them for the heads on my Pasta Angels. And I am sure you can find many more uses for them.

Craft: Decorative Sea Glass Light

This is Sea Glass in a small fish bowl. A lady I worked for made this. She spends hours and hours finding this glass in Lake Michigan and other lakes she visits in her travels. This is a Christmas gift from her and I wanted to share it with you! She has many decorative bowls and figurines filled with this colored glass.

I mentioned to her once how I loved her collection and I was brought to tears when I opened her gift to me!! I know the time she put into finding these beautiful pieces of glass. I have about a handfull of my own which we found in Lake Michigan and I swear it took hours and hours and many trips to the beach to find it.

She put it in the bowl alternately with mini Christmas lights and put the doily on top with a ribbon. I'ts so much more gorgeous than this picture shows. I will use it as a nightlight in my living room so everyone can enjoy it. It
gets so many compliments!

Contests:

These contests are weekly. We pick 2 tip winners and 1 photo winner at the end of each week. Each winner will win $25!

Today's Tips:

Wedding Cake and Flower Centerpiece

You can slash your flower AND cake budget with this cool tip. Have your baker make an 8 or 9 inch birthday type cake for each one of your tables. Display them on rented or borrowed cake stands. Wind the base with ivy or other greens, and scatter real or silk rose petals about the table. Each cake can be decorated differently; dotted swiss, white on white stripes, white icing roses, or accented with more petals or fresh flowers. Do the same for the bridal table.

Not only will you eliminate the need for a big wedding cake AND the cost of each centerpiece, but if you have a "designated" cake cutter to serve at each table, dessert will become a real conversation piece.

Weather Planning for Vacation

When planning a vacation, be aware of your destinations weather and temperatures. Some folks who come to Las Vegas, NV, think just because they're coming to "the desert", that it's going to be warm. Not if you come in the winter months, we, too, have cold weather. You might be be getting a inexpensive plane fare and hotel rates, but you could have to spend your savings at a local clothing store buying warmer clothes than what you brought with you. I've heard of lots of people who have to buy long sleeves shirts and jackets, after arriving to what they thought was going to be a warmer climate.

Recharger Cord Labeling

We all have those "rechargeable" appliances. Sometimes the cords all look the same. I could not match up cords to appliances when we relocated. Not only was it frustrating to match, but also time consuming and expensive to replace. There was also to fear that the wrong charger would damage the appliance. To solve that problem, I add a "tape label", duct tape folded over the cord and the name of the appliance written in permanent marker on the tape or use a silver permanent marker to write on the plug if there's room. as soon as I remove the item from the box. No more mismatched cords.

Firewood from Building Sites

We managed to get nearly all of our wood this year from local building sites. The builders are only too happy to empty their expensive skips of offcuts and waste wood. So, if you have a van and time next year start early. You too could have free heating over the winter next year!

Dog Obedience Advice: Use a Squirt Bottle

After completing the basic pet training course at Petsmart, the most effective tool I came away with is to use a Squirt/Spray Bottle to stop a dogs barking. Simply spray your dog in the face or better yet, the hind quarters, the rear end. It is useful to help stop other unwanted behaviors if you use it while the dog is in the act.

Before long all you have to do is say "squirt bottle" and the behavior comes to a halt. Basic Training classes at Petsmart are well worth it. Keeping in mind that your consistency with your beloved is what will make or break your relationship with your pet.

Retrieve Long Hair in a Plugged Shower Drain

If drain cleaners are not working in a shower or bathtub drain, the problem might be higher up.

The shower drain in my long-haired teenage daughter's bathroom was plugged so badly she ended up standing in water up to her ankles when she took a shower. I tried all kinds of drain cleaners, to no avail. Then one day, I took the grate off the top of the drain so that I could look down with a flashlight and possibly see something. What a surprise: I could only see a couple of inches down! The crossbars in the pipe, like a plus sign about two inches down, were completely covered with hair!

I used needle-nose pliers to pull out a wad of long hairs as thick as my thumb, that was draped over the crossbars, hanging down like a fringe, almost completely blocking the pipe where drain cleaners had no effect.

Frugal Wrinkle Releaser

Instead of buying a bottle of Downy wrinkle releaser, get a spray bottle and put about one ounce of liquid fabric softener in it, then fill the rest of the spray bottle with water. Shake up the spray bottle to mix the softener and the water. This mixture when sprayed on any fabric except silk or suede will release wrinkles. The added benefit is that bugs do not like fabric softener.

Steak Salad for Dinner

When the family would like something a bit luxurious for dinner and the budget won't quite make it, try a steak salad. Get a smaller steak, marinate if for a few hours as you normally would (Italian dressing will do). When it's dinner time, cook it to suit the family, medium to medium well is best. Let sit for 10 minutes.

Make a bowl of any salad ingredients on hand, portion them out, slice the steak very thinly, and let that be portioned according to people's taste, that is, small bites for children, or less for those who don't like to eat large amounts of meat. Scatter on top of salad greens. Serve with garlic bread or french bread, and dress with your favorite dressing.

Source: My family is the source for our way of doing it; it was a desperation recipe. It may be done elsewhere, I don't know.

Flatten Ground Meat for Quicker Defrosting

For easy storing and thawing of ground beef, turkey, chicken or bulk sausage. Divide into 1lb portions and place each lb in a gallon zip lock bag. With bag zipped closed, flatten by hand or roll meat flat with rolling pin, to fill the bag, the thinner the better! Now the bags can be stored in the freezer stacked flat. They take up much less room. When ready to use, the meat thaws in 15-20 minutes.

Good for frozen veggies, potatoes, dough, most anything!

Dear Webby's Joke of the Day

"We live in a great country," the kindergarten teacher said. "One of the reasons we should be happy is that, in this country, we are all free."

Tar Stain on Carpet

My landlords installed very short and cheap tan carpeting in this house. My sister tracked tar across it. I've tried to snip it out - but the carpeting is too short to snip. I'm afraid of using an iron on it (to heat it up and remove with wax paper) because I'm afraid it'll melt. Any suggestions? Excessive Sweating - Red Hands

My hands get bright red almost all the time. It started when I was 13, I'm now 38. It's very embarrassing, especially in front of an audience. My mother has raynauds, but her hands don't get red, they turn white. I haven't told my doctor yet, I don't know how he hasn't noticed. I feel very healthy and my blood pressure is normal, but as I approach middle aged, I am concerned. I would welcome any feedback from people with my same symptoms.

Wearing a Mask While Cleaning

I'm wondering if anyone out there wears a protective mask while cleaning the toilet or bathroom? I found a clip on youtube with advice on bathroom cleaning, where the nanny presenting the clip recommends wearing a mask to protect your health while using toilet cleaning chemicals.

Shooting Pain in Neck

Ever since I was a teenager, I get a shooting pain in my neck when I turn my head right. What could it be? Does a pinched nerve last that long? I am 31 now and it started when I was like 15.

I finally went to the doctors to tell her my symptoms. There is sometimes a shooting pain in my neck when I turn right, and then I see little dots afterwards. I'm having more lower back pains the last year, and sometimes my hands feel tingly and numb. I'm waiting for xray results. just wondering if anyone has had same symptoms?
