Juliet (Yorkshire Terrier)

This is Juliet, she is 5 years old and she is a Yorkshire Terrier. I purchased her from a breeder in New Jersey and she like the baby of the house. When she gets mad or feels bad she goes into her bed and grabs her blanket and suckles it like a child. She follows me around everywhere I go, even into the bathroom. I have two other yorkies and they are nothing like Juliet they are very independent.

Today's Tips

Peanut Butter Candy

Here is a recipe for a wonderful peanut butter candy with only 3 ingredients.

  • 1 one lb. bag of peanut butter flavored discs
  • 1 one lb bag. of vanilla flavored discs
  • 1 18 oz. jar CHUNKY peanut butter.

(the discs can be bought at most craft stores)

Pour all the discs into a microwave safe bowl and melt in microwave in 1 minute increments. You must stir in between because even though they melt, they still hold their shape.

After they are melted stir in the CHUNKY peanut butter until smooth.

Pour into a 9X13 cake pan that was sprayed with PAM or something like that.

Refrigerate 30 min, then let sit out 30 min till soft enough to cut into little pieces.

Renting Boston Ferns

I am not adept at all with raising lush, thriving Boston Ferns, but I love the look of them. When I have had occasion to want magnificent Boston Ferns in my home (receptions, open house for realty purposes, etc.), I simply rent them for one or two days from a local florist, much as you would for a wedding.

The cost is very reasonable and my florist will bring the plants out to my house, set them up on my fern stands, issue instructions that I am not to touch them (she knows me well), and then returns to collect them after the event.

Her charge for this service is extremely reasonable, and I don't have to fuss with trying to maintain a plant until my next occasion.

Planting Green Pepper Plants

When we plant green pepper plants, my husband always places 2 or 3 book matches in the bottom of the hole before planting. It must be the sulfur in the match heads, but whatever it is, the difference is amazing. We always get strong, vigorous plants with the most beautiful large peppers all summer.

Uses For Unwanted Books

Tips for recycling or using unwanted books. Post your ideas.

Got books you've already read and they're taking up space? Why not take them to your local library! Not only are you helping your community but you can also use it as a tax write off!

As for magazines some library's do accept them, but if you're local library doesn't accept them consider taking them to your community hospital or woman's shelter. Never throw away books and magazines! RECYCLE! There's always someone who hasn't read it yet!

Cowboy Oatmeal Joke

A tough old cowboy counseled his grandson that if he wanted to live a long life, the secret was to sprinkle a pinch of gun powder on his oatmeal every morning.

The grandson did this religiously to the age of 103. When he died, he left 14 children, 30 grand-children, 45 great grandchildren, 25 great-great grand children, and a 15 foot hole where the crematorium used to be.

Removing Crayon from Clothes

Children's Table at Rehearsal Dinner

My son and his fiance were having 4 children in their wedding; I did not want the children to be bored at a formal affair so I made the children a table; it was situated near the children's parent's table. I covered it with the black tablecloth with an overlay of white; each child had their own paper placemat that had a wedding picture on it with the bride/groom's name, date and the child's name; the centerpiece was votive candles on each side of a large ice cream sundae bouquet.

At each child's place setting was a small ice cream sundae bouquet for them to take home. Bubble gum pieces were scattered around the centerpiece (I used glass marbles scattered around the centerpieces on the adult tables). On the back of each child's chair was a sand bucket filled with coloring books, candy, crayons and small games; it was tied to the chair with satin ribbon.

The table was child-friendly and the children enjoyed themselves trememously during the course of the evening. The place mats that were colored by the children were presented to the bride and groom as a keepsake of the children in their wedding.

Refinishing Mahogany Furniture

I found that antique mahogany furniture is difficult to refinish with hardware or paint store type stains. Go to a boat supply house and get the mahogany stains which will give great results. Do not put a polyurethane coat over the furniture. Use a spray type finisher and rub down with cheese cloth and stain w/cheese cloth as well, thus no lint or dust on surface.

Dog Constipation

I found this tip while searching for a remedy for our 10 year old Rat Terrier. He has been suffering from constipation, which I learned is a common problem with older pets. The remedy is quite simple. Half a teaspoon of canned pumpkin a day.

My source advised that this is one case where if a little is good, more is not better. More will increase the problem. Also advised, do not use canned pumpkin pie mix with the spices, just plain old canned pumpkin. Within 3 days, he was doing better. And I still have enough pumpkin to make a pie. *grin*

Chicken Ceasar Salad
By Tawnda

Ingredients:

  • One bunch of romaine lettuce
  • One can of turkey or chicken, drained
  • Ceasar salad dressing (your choice)
  • grated parmesan cheese

Directions:

Take one bunch of romaine lettuce and wash well, shaking off excess water. Tear leaves into bite size pieces. Let set in strainer about five minutes.

Take one can of chicken or turkey and drain. Flake with a fork.

Place lettuce in a salad bowl, add chicken and lightly toss.

Add your choice of Ceasar salad dressing, the creamy is best, and sprinkle with grated parmesan cheese. (Not the kind in the can that you put on spaghetti) Toss again.

Add croutons if you wish. Great for a light lunch!

Chicken Pot Pie
By Tawnda

Over the years I have tried to make homemade chicken pot pies and have never liked how any of them turned out. Recently I was given several boxes of the pre-made pie crusts and I created my own recipe that turned out so good the kids ate every drop!

Chicken Pot Pie

  • Four pre-made pie crusts (in the refrigerated section of the grocery store)
  • Two sticks of butter or margarine
  • 1 c. flour
  • 1 1/2 - 2 c. milk
  • About 2 c. pre-cooked chicken, ham, turkey or whatever your choice of meat
  • 1 c. frozen diced carrots
  • 1 c. frozen peas
  • 1 c. frozen corn
  • 1 Tbsp. garlic powder
  • 1 tsp. pepper
  • 2 tsp. salt

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Spray a 13x9x2" baking dish with non-stick spray.

Lay three of the pie crusts in your dish the best you can to cover the bottom, sides and enough to leave a 1/4"-1/2" lip on the edge of the dish. Press seems together to make one large crust.

Place one cup of the meat into the dish, spreading around the bottom. Salt and pepper to taste, and sprinkle some garlic powder over chicken, reserving some for top layer. Add vegetables spreading them over the chicken.

Add other cup of chicken to top of vegetables and season with remaining salt, pepper and garlic powder. On the stove, melt two sticks of butter or margarine and let cook until it starts to turn golden.

Add the flour and using a wire whisk, stir quickly to remove any lumps. Add 1 1/2-2 c. of milk until it is the consistancy you like. Remember, oven cooking time will thicken it some.

Take remaining pie crust and fold into fourths and cutting on the folds. Place one on each end on top of the chicken and place the other two in the center. You will have gaps, but this is perfect for ventilation. Fold the bottom crust edges over the top, forming the edge.

Place in preheated oven for 45-60 mins. or until crust is golden.

Different Ideas for a Baby Shower

My DIL is having another baby girl, my other granddaughter is only 18 months old. We had a baby shower for the first baby, so she really doesn't need anything new. Would it be ok to have a mommy baby shower, you know things for the mom, not just the new baby? Or a diaper shower, where everyone brings diapers, you can always use those and with 2 kids in diapers it will get expensive. Any ideas or suggestions?

Thanks,

Stretches To Help Shins

I have recently joined the gym and although my body is getting rid of soreness and it is getting easier to exercise for longer periods of time, I have trouble with my shins cramping or getting tired before I barely break a sweat.

Usually it is while I am on the treadmill. For me to get my heartrate up I have to be on at the 3.0-3.5 setting, but after ten minutes, my shin muscles are tired.

Does anyone have any tips on helping this problem? It has been so long since I have worked out I don't remember what stretches will help the shins. I don't want shin splints!

All About Strawberry Pots
By Monica Resinger

Strawberry pots are the pots that are shaped like an urn and have 'pockets' up and down the sides of the pot. They are made especially for growing strawberries and are easy and convenient. You can also grow herbs, flowers or other plants in them. Plants that have a hanging habit put the pockets of strawberry pots to good use. Strawberries do have a hanging habit and don't mind being cramped because their roots are shallow so are an excellent choice for growing in a strawberry pot.

Living a Simple Life
By Crystal Miller

Living the simple life is not always an easy task. In today's world of hustle, bustle and busy lives, the simple life can be hard to find. It seems that the home can often become a rest stop to refresh a moment and then move onto the next activity. Life can become too busy. Perhaps in your heart you would like life to be a little simpler. You would like time to just "stop and smell the roses" but can't quite figure out how to get to that point. Another down side to a life that is too busy is that I believe it can rob us of some of the greater joys of being a homemaker. I believe that as we live this "life in the fast lane" we can become discontent.

The Perfect Wedding Budget
By Gerry Huwaljik

The traditional wedding! Often the dream of every little girl, the traditional wedding fills one's imagination with long flowing lace, yards of white satin, the fragrance of a thousand white flowers tied with pink bows, and a wedding cake with at least five tiers of iced heaven. And along with such a vision comes a financial picture that staggers the imagination of those who pay the bills. While the thought of planning a wedding within the boundaries of a budget can bring tears to a bride, knowing how to do some special planning can dry those tears and bring a joyous delight.
