More Rocky (Jack Russell Terrier)

This is the second photo I am sending in of my litte Jack Russell Terrier, Rocky. In this one, he is 14 months old. He is a very smart and lovable little dog. He loves to have fun and is a joy to have around. We are never bored because he keeps us laughing and entertained all the time. He likes to watch other dogs on television. He gets quite excited when he sees dogs of the same breed as himself.

Soaker Hoses and Newspaper

I've been gardening, seems like forever. My best 'creation' was laying a soaker hose along the growing rows, then cover the garden with newspapers. They must be 8-10 sheets deep to keep out the weeds. During the winter, we count the weekly paper out and staple the corners to keep them separate. That gave me an idea. so now when I lay the papers in the garden, I staple them together. They don't fly around and 'repairs' are easy.

When it's planting time, I just cut the place I wish to plant and there ya go. These pics were taken a couple of years ago when we had very little rain. I ran the soakers very little and in August which was the worst here, I was even giving lettuce and mesculun mix to my neighbors.

In one pic I believe you can see the umbrella which I use along with a sheet to shade the lettuce area when it gets hot. My neighbor gave me rav compliments when I showed up with my 'extra' for her, and she had a very important dinner meeting for her husbands clients. They all asked where she had gotten such wonderful greens for the salad. That compliment alone made my year! Also? those newspapers compost down, just need some grass clippings to help. Easy way to do it all.

Feed the garden, save water, lessen the weeding, keeps your feet clean when it's muddy too!. Happy gardening!!

Today's Tips

Baking Soda and Dawn For Clothing Stains

A great way to remove stains from your clothes is to mix baking soda and Dawn liquid dishwashing soap (blue liquid) into a paste. Brush it into the stain and let set. The amount of time you let it set depends on the severity of stain. This is especially good for grease stains in modern day materials. Leave the paste in and wash clothes as usual, 99.9% of the time everything is removed and the outfit is like new.

Funny pet story: The bunny and the parrot pellets.

Bunnies will eat anything. Tonight I was getting ready to put the parrot in his cage for the night. I always give him fresh water and pellets at night. I put his dish on the coffee table and picked up the supply of parrot pellets. The bunny jumped on the coffee table. She landed on the parrot's dish and fell back on the floor. (Bunnies are good at jumping but not as gracefully as a cat at that height.)

Anyway, the bunny knocked the parrot pellets all over the floor. She was THRILLED. She started to gobble up as many as she could. At the same time I was trying to pick the pellets up off the carpet as quickly as I could to keep the bunny from eating them. It was quite the race, but I think she won.

Pretty clever bunny, I'd say. ;-) If she had only jumped on the coffee table, she'd have gotten only a few bites because I would have taken the pellets away. As it was all dumped all over the floor, she had time to eat quite a few more. Bunny was a happy bunny.

Can't Sleep Joke

Bob was having trouble getting to sleep at night. He went to see his doctor, who prescribed some extra strong, sleeping pills. Sunday night Bob took the pills, slept well and was awake before he heard the alarm. He took his time getting to the office, strolled in and said to the boss. "I didn't have a bit of trouble getting up this morning."

"That's fine," roared the boss, "but where were you Monday & Tuesday?"

Starting Seedlings

Tips for starting seedlings to plant. Post your ideas.

Easy Method of Growing Seedlings

Take a bag of dirt, flatten it out. cut openings where you will plant the seeds, water and plant seeds. I find that I am probably pulling up seedlings along with weeds when I plant directly in the garden. This way, you are less likely to do that because this method isn't going to have any weed seeds commingled with the seeds.

Keeping in Touch with the Relatives With Video and Audio Recordings

We live a long distance from most of our relatives and one thing they appreciated most from us was the times when we would either video record the children or else record their voices on a tape and send it to them. Doesn't cost much and they really enjoyed it. They said it made them feel like we were just a little closer.

Toenail Fungus Treatment

Those of you who have that bothersome toenail fungus.

They have medications for it but some of us can't take it if your on other medications.

Try this. When you shower or bathe while the nail are soft. Try using Vicks vapor rub.

I thought it was corny but then I tried it, it takes time but you will see a difference. And not only that it's great for athlete's foot. I have been using it for about a year and my nails have softened up and are starting to get new nails. It really works. It's not a guarantee but what have you got to lose?

Garden Ridge Damaged Items Rack

The Garden Ridge I shop at has a rack in the rear of the store where they sell damaged items, etc. For Christmas one year I found picture frames with the glass broken for $1. I went to the dollar store and bought a cheap frame for the glass, so a nice picture frame cost me $2. That year I had family portraits made so this turned out to be helpful. I have found lots of good items on the rack, lamps, a cake top, lamp shades with the plastic off. When you get home and realize how much you've saved its hard to believe.

Decorating a Room With Rose Carpeting

I am moving into a new room in my father's home and having trouble deciding on what to do with it. It is one bedroom and has a rose carpet but in the corner of the room it has a little kitchen area. The room has waist high walls, then the ceiling slants to a point at the top.

The problem that I am having is that I have this pink rug which makes me feel 12 (I have just turned 20) and a great new bed set that i have just purchased which is a tan suede. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do to make it a fun twenty something room on a small budget. I am up for any suggestions.

Thanks,

Building Your Dream Home - Part 2
By Mark J. Donovan

Razing the Cottage

With new house plans and permits in hand, subcontractors hired and a Septic Design in process, it was now time to raze the existing cottage. I considered employing the local fire department to burn it down, however I chose the demolition route instead. Though I did not contact the Fire Department, I was convinced that this route would have led to multiple delays and pitfalls, as I would have been at the whim of several town employees and weather conditions. The demolition route required only the excavator subcontractor and had less weather related schedule risks. In addition, the demolition cost and effort was very reasonable. Within two days, it was as if the cottage never existed on the land. It is important to note, however, that the cottage was relatively small. It was 22' x 30'. If the cottage had been significantly larger, then the Fire Department route may have made more financial sense.

Broiled Swordfish Provencal
By Charlie Burke

Joanne and I particularly enjoy swordfish broiled or on the grill, but we always look to see what looks particularly good at the fish market. "Fresh" means the fish has never been frozen; it does not guarantee that it is of the highest quality. Look for glistening, brightly colored fish and do not hesitate to change from your first choice if another looks better. Always choose fresh over previously frozen. The flesh should be firm and bounce back if touched and should smell only of the sea.
