Water balloon fights are always a big hit at summer kids parties, but the burst balloons all over the ground are a hazard to wildlife and curious toddlers. Encourage kids to clean up by offering a prize for the one who picks up the most bits of rubber balloon.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends against balloons at parties for toddlers. Keep air balloons far out of reach if they are being used. My husband, as a child, lost a neighborhood friend when a balloon popped in his face at his own birthday party. A piece of the balloon shot into his windpipe, and being wet and sticky, blocked it completely. The paramedics could not save him or extract the fragment in time and he died. The chance of this happening with a water balloon is even more likely, even with older children. Certainly keep toddlers away in a separate area if a balloon fight is in progress.
