Make an Apron from Fabric Scraps

Make quick Christmas gifts with scraps from your stash that they will love. I needed quick gifts that would not hurt our budget so I took a look at my fabric stash and I was able to find unusual combinations to create this totally divalicious apron! I drew my own pattern out by looking at other patterns but you can buy a pattern and use that if needed.

First, pull out your stash and lay it out next to each other, take a look and see what unusual combinations pop out. Mix and match and have fun, you never know what you come up with. Here I used zebra fabric, black with pink polkadots, pink satin and tulle.

For added flair, I used hot fix crystals to add diva. This was a little girl's apron and I was able to make the whole thing with very little fabric. The best part is have fun, be frugal and don't be afraid to try new combinations! Take a look at my blog:

Susie-Q (Maine Coon)

This is Susie-Q. She is eleven years old and a Maine Coon. We adopted Susie-Q from an animal shelter 6 years ago.

She loves to slap us on the leg and run. She enjoys to race up and down the hallway. Susie-Q already had her name when we got her. She will only eat Friskies and nothing else. She likes her litter box cleaned as soon as she has used it.

I captured the image yesterday when my husband was putting up the Xmas outdoor decorations.

Today's Tips:

Reusable Christmas Gift Tags

When I was a child, my mother would make special Christmas present name tags for me and my sisters. Using Christmas cards, we had received she would cut them out and decorate them using yarn, ribbon, lace, etc. Using a big needle, she would sew around the edges of each one, put a string on it and they were done!

Each year when we would unwrap the presents, we would give her the name tags and they would be used again the next year, sometimes needing yarn replacement as us kids were so excited to get into our presents. It was great because we came to just know automatically which ones were ours because some of the tags never changed, she still uses the one from my first Christmas to this day when I go to her house for the holidays.

It was a great and cheap way to label our gifts and it's something I will always remember as a special part of our families traditions. I have even started doing this with my daughter.

Mixing Starch in a Spray Bottle

When I worked, I used starch in many of my clothes. A cheap alternative to the spray cans (which don't last long at all), is to buy some liquid starch. I would mix it in a spray bottle - usually about 1/2 water to 1/2 starch for fairly heavy starch results. A $3.00 or $4.00 bottle of liquid starch would last literally for years. The clothes looked and smelled really good after an ironing with the starch. With the cans costing $1.00 or more, and only starching one or two shirts, this is a real savings.

Applique Backing

Keep the used baby wipes and dryer sheets, for great backing for appliqueing. They should be washed first, by putting them in the mesh bag that you use for delicate clothing in for machine washing.

Wrap Presents in Reusable Grocery Bags

For Christmas gift wrapping this year, I purchased some of the recycle bags that stores are selling now, canvas and usually green, the cost is usually a dollar. Use this bag to put your gifts in, to encourage recycling. A paper gift bag would cost about the same. This bag will last a lot longer and put festive bows on it.

Set Up a Gift Fund for Expensive Presents

If you have a large ticket item you crave, how about starting a "gift fund" for it among your friends and relations? Just say that rather than a gift, you would prefer a contribution to the say "iPod Gift Fund" and pool those gifts for one bigger purpose. It certainly would solve the problem of what to give you for Xmas or a birthday!

I did that when trying to acquire some musical instruments a few years back - and although my family was a bit perplexed, they joined in and I thus financed the instruments I desired that I would never have been able to buy otherwise.

Christmas Card Bookmarks

I am giving books to friends this year for Christmas. While getting out my card holder from last year filled with last years cards a thought came to me to make bookmarks to put inside the books I am giving. I set to work and in no time at all made several beautiful bookmarks. First I sorted through the cards and found the ones that would work.

Next, with a good sharp pair of scissors I cut a strip one to three inches wide from the card I was using. Next, punch a hole through the top and then add a pretty Christmas ribbon, the ribbon I had wasn't narrow enough so I used raffia for the tassel. I belong to a ladies bible study and plan to give them each a bookmark enclosed in their Christmas card.

If I have any leftover cards, I will cut and make package tags from them, which I have done for years. Enjoy using your prior years Christmas cards.

Outside Faucet Cover for Freezing Weather

All you need are styrofoam cups, an empty 2 litter pop bottle and tape. We are in a big cold snap right nowand my local Home Depot was sold out of faucet covers, so I came up with an even better idea.

I took three large styrofoam cups (20 oz. size from the $1 store) and stacked them all together inside of each other. I then cut off the top lips of the top 2 cups so the cups were no taller than the bottom cup. These go on to the spout first and if you like, you can just tape these cups on to the faucet and leave it at that, but for added protection I cut the bottom half off of a 2 litter pop bottle and put this over the cups. In between the cups and the bottle-bottom I put quilt batting for extra insulation, but you could also use fiberglass insulation, spray in foam or even just a rag. Lastly, I duct taped this to the side of my house. I bet you could also drill a hole and uses zip-ties to secure it.

Wandering Jew Plant As Medicine

To everyone that suffers from pain in their hands due to carpal tunnel or arthritis pain, and probably even more. All YOU NEED ARE 1 to 3 leaves of this humble and amazing plant. Rinse and boil them until they turn pink. The water will probable turn green, depending on how many leaves you are boiling. When leaves are pink, pour the water in a bowl and put your hands above the bowl, (Your hands are going to receive the steam, DON'T PUT YOUR HANDS IN THE BOILING WATER. YOU'LL GET BURNED!). When there is no more steam coming out, just throw the water away.

My daughter who has suffered from this pain, went to the doctors. use different kinds of medicines and never got better, was almost crying one day in pain, I got 3 leaves and did it on her. After almost 20 minutes, she told me there was no more pain. I've been thinking about sharing this tip with everyone, but was afraid of not knowing what to say, and look how much I've said right now. This is true. Hope it works as well for many of you that are suffering from this affliction.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to the world. God loves us all big or small, rich or poor. God bless you and remember that he loves you as much as he loves me. You are not alone. Hang in there, have faith.

Source: This tip was given to me by a Chinese lady whose brother in law, from Thailand gave it to her for her husband suffering from Carpal tunnel pain.

Make a Trellis Out of an Old Box Spring

Gardening is a hobby with my wife and me. As we have a number of Clematis vines the trellises deteriorate. In my recycling travels I came upon a great way to make a trellis. I came by a motel and noticed a discarded box spring by the dumpster. I took it home and took it apart, finding some nice 1x4's and then took a bolt cutter and cut the spring in half and wala. We have 2 great trellises that are now in use. I might add that the Clematis and the box springs make great bed fellows.

Make Sure Your Propane Tank Is Empty Before Refilling

Did you know the cost to fill you propane bottle is the same regardless how much propane it takes to fill it? Sometimes it is hard to tell if a bottle is full, half full, or empty. A bottle should have its empty weight on the side, it should be in the neighborhood of 17 lbs. for a small BBQ or fryer sized bottle. A full tank weighs 38 lbs.

I found this out today when I took a bottle to be filled. They charge over $26 to fill a bottle. They asked me if I was sure, I told them to "top it off". That is when they told me it wasn't like buying gas, you pay the full price if it takes a little or if it is totally empty.

I saved myself $26 plus tax. Next time, I will weigh the bottle before I take it to see if it really needs to be filled or not.

Source: The guy at Orschelons. I called some other propane places around, and they verified what he told me as being correct.

Use Stevia Instead of Sugar

I have found a new sweetener to replace sugar, called Stevia. My doctor recommended it and I bought it at the GNC store in the Mall. It is not approved by the FDA yet. It is super sweet and I can get 3 servings out of one little packet. It comes in liquid, bulk, or packets. No after taste like some of the other artificial ones.

Make Hot Chocolate With Milk

Add milk to hot chocolate or cocoa! I worry about Hubby and Son getting enough calcium, so I often add some cold milk to their hot cocoa or chocolate. It cools the drink down enough for Son, and adds a nice flavor to inexpensive powdered mixes. And it uses up milk in the not-drinking-much months!

Dear Webby's Joke of the Day

The Wednesday-night church service coincided with the last day of hunting season.

Our pastor asked who had bagged a deer.

No one raised a hand.

Puzzled, the pastor said, "I don't get it. Last Sunday many of you said you were missing because of hunting season. I had the whole congregation pray for your deer."

One hunter groaned, "Well, it worked. They're all safe."

Bulb in LED Flashlight Stopped Working

I left one of those LED wind up flashlights in my car on purpose. Well, the nights have been very cold and although the garage doesn't get down to freezing, you can imagine just how cold it can become. I took a walk around the block with the flashlight fully charged and one of the 4 LED bulbs dimmed out within 10 mins.

I re-wound it and all the LEDs became very bright, but as soon as the winding stopped, they went back to a dimmer state. The weak LED turned off. Is this because it's a dud, or do you think a couple of weeks in a very cold car did something to destroy it? I like the idea of leaving one of these flashlights in the car, but this may not be feasible.

Fixing Washing Machine Leaks

We replaced the tub seal on the washing machine because it was torn up. After putting it back together we tested the low-water level cycle. It still leaks, but not from tub seal. We're very sure of this. The water comes from the brake/clutch assembly. We then noticed 2 small holes in the center (tubular part) of the inner tub but don't see how that could cause water to get down below. Is that possible?

Another thought is the center post seals, but we want to eliminate the first possibility so that's why we're asking. We also noticed the spanner nut is corroded along the bottom and has lost about 1/4 inch in some places, so we are replacing it. Would that have caused a leak too? We don't know if going after the center post seals would be a hard job or not, but we have the machine torn apart anyway.

Preventing Suede Shoes from Getting Shiny

I recently bought some rough leather boots at JCPenney's. I have several pair of shoes made of this material. It's not the slick leather, it's more of a suede. The toe area on almost every pair after a few wears begins to wear thin and get shiny. This looks really bad.

I have only had these boots about a month and only wore them a few times but I noticed just a couple of days ago the right one is getting shiny, or dull however you want to describe it. It isn't like the rest of the boot. Does anyone have any ideas on ways to prevent this? I would appreciate your help. Thanks.

What Breed is My Dog?

Has anyone seen a mixed breed like this? I have been going crazy searching all over the world wide web for pictures that look like our baby Raider. He is now 5 1/2 months., born early July 2008. We adopted him from the Fremont shelter. The cutest little thing ever. He loves to play ball and fetch with his toys. He loves walks and being off the leash and is a super fast runner. So you must keep your eye on him at all times.

He also jumps really high and does this little prance kinda walk. He is very lovable, likes to cuddle with me and loves my furry blankets. After all my searching I have come to the conclusion that he is possibly Shiba Inu/Chihuahua or a Shiba Inu mix of some sort. Please reply and post answers if you have any information or if you have any pictures. Thanks.
