Why do you have to pack brown sugar when using it in a recipe?

Brown sugar, unlike granulated sugar (regular sugar) doesn't settle and fill in air pockets. It is clumpy and creates areas of air. You pack brown sugar to push that extra air out there by getting an accurate and consistent measurement.
