Daily Thrifty Tips - June 7, 2007

Volume Six, Number 111, June 7, 2007 (Read It Online)

Later this month, we would like to publish some camping tips. Do you have any camping tips to share with ThriftyFun readers? I will be camping in Oregon for the 4th of July. Fireworks are very distressing for our dog (Maggie) so we found a camp area that isn't likely to have any fireworks for her to contend with. It should be a nice way to celebrate the holiday without stressing out Maggie.

Thanks for reading,

Susan

Sun Protection For Babies

Always have plenty of baby sunscreen and if you can keep the hat on them while they are by the pool or in the sun, this is even more protection from the sun. This is our precious grandaughter of 8 months. Aubrey Rae was adopted several days after being born by my daughter and son in law. She has been such a blessing to our family. She is always smiling and loves her first swim suit!

Updating an Old Lamp

I took a lamp I've had since the early 70's that was out of style colorwise, so this is what I did to reinvent a more fashionable
lamp with a pearlized finish.

I bought some wrapping paper with a neutral background that had sparkles. I tore the paper into small pieces and used Plaid Decoupage Glue in glossy finish. I started to paint glue onto the gold colored glass globe base, piece by piece until I covered it.

During this first process, I let some of the glued pieces dry a bit before pasting a new batch of pieces of paper overlapping the others. Continue, pasting until you are happy with the results, then give the covered globe several coats of the Plaid Decoupage gloss finish glue, let dry between coats.

The added bonus, the defused light in the base showed through some of the glued pieces.

The photo shows the before and after!

Vinnie Vega (Toy Fox Terrier)

Vinnie Vega is a 7 month old Toy Fox Terrier. I recieved Vinnie as a birthday present about a month ago.

He is a big change for me as we have 3 other dogs, 2 of which are labs and 1 boxer, so he is quite small in comparison. He is a joy.

He likes to sit on the back of the couch and rest his head and paws on my shoulder while I watch TV or play on the computer and boy does he like to run when we go outside.

Today's Tips:

Refilling Laundry Detergent Dispensers

I buy the economy size jugs of laundry detergent to refill a button-spout type jug for ease of dispensing the soap. I've found that pouring the soap from the regular type jug into the one that has the button spout is messy and quite a bit of detergent remains in the jug because of the configuration of the spout. I now use a funnel to catch the drips from the air hole in the spout and then when it's "empty", I remove the spout (which is simply an insert in the mouth of the jug) with a pair of pliers and the rest of the soap can be poured out, sometimes as much as a half cupful.

Reuse Honey Bottle For Squeeze Jelly

My four year old grandson was ready for lunch and wanted to know where the squeeze bottle of jelly was for his sandwich. I had just emptied a squeeze jar of honey, so I removed the top, washed the honey container, filled it with the strawberry jelly, put the top on and he squeezed out jelly for his sandwich. I now have a use for the squeeze jars after the honey is gone and a happy grandson.

Expensive Does Not Equal Quality

I sent in for a free trial of some relatively expensive lip treatment, which didn't live up to my expectations, and certainly not for the price. Luckily I found my favorite lip gloss at the 99 Cent Store - which I actually like better! So, being pricey won't always guarantee quality.

Thrifty Magazines, Books and Puzzles

Books and puzzles can be purchased cheap at yard sales. Once you are done, store in the closet and in spring, have your own yard sale or sell items at consignment shop. You can also trade in to used book stores for credit towards other books.

As for magazines, get a few friends together and designate one person per month to buy the magazine and have everyone read it. This way you only have to buy a magazine once every few months.

Check Out Community Clinics

Don't turn your nose up at community clinics. I am still trying to convince a friend of mine with insurance to go to one. There was a long wait, but when I got in to see the medical staff and the doctor were much nicer and more thorough than the personnel at my paid HMO! And there were meds, gratis, too, if you qualified!

Add Baking Soda to Conditioner

I used the tip posted by someone earlier about using salt with shampoo and it works great. My hair didn't look dull anymore. I took that one step further this morning, after adding salt to my shampoo, I mixed baking soda with my conditioner, and my hair looks even better, and a lot softer. I am so happy with the results, I just had to share this.

Jewelry Armoire for Jewelry Crafts

Free standing jewelry armoires make attractive storage units for beads, jewelry findings, and tools. The armoires can be found for reasonable prices at Wal-Mart, thrift stores, and yard sales. Mine has hooks on the main door that are great for hanging bead strands and chains, shallow lined drawers with separate compartments for beads and findings, a large cubby for hand tools, and deeper drawers for other odds and ends. The best part is that the armoire is a small attractive addition to a bedroom for those who do not have their own craft room.

Digital Picture Of Refrigerator Contents

Take a daily pic of the contents of your ice box with your digi-cam and email it to family members so that less time is spent gazing into the open door "just looking", causing your fridge to have to work harder to make up the loss of cold air!

Using an Antenna With DirecTV

I have had DirecTV installed but we do not receive local channels and thus invested in a Terk antenna that sits on the dish. Now, how should it be installed (the antenna came w/ more wire connections (wires) than the satellite provides for). Also, to receive stations locally should the DirecTV system be turned off while the antenna is in use? Several years ago we had the same setup and it worked fine but this one is so different; I am just not sure.

Hope to hear from someone that can give me some advice.

Sincerely,
Nelwyn from Bunkie,LA

Dealing With Annoying Birds

There is a little black bird that's been in my garden for about a month now, and he's driving me insane. I love all animals but this little guy is really testing me. He tweets from 5:30 AM until I leave for work at 8 AM. I'm not sure how much more I can take. Can you tell me how to get rid of him without hurting him?

Roasted Chili Pepper Dip

Whilst I was visiting the USA I had a chili dip that was made by some Mexican friends... it involved baking whole chillies in the oven and then? My memory escapes me (perhaps it was the wine). Anyway, I am unable to recall how the recipe was finished, but it ended up a delicious (albeit hot) dip. Can anyone help with the recipe - or similar please?

Using a Pumice Stone for Hair Removal

I am just wondering how to use pumice stone for hair removal on one's body. Using silky mitts right now but want something more economical. Don't fancy going into a car place in Abdn and asking for fine grain sandpaper so wondered if anyone knew any details.

Thanks,

Getting Carpenter Ants

Help me please! We are having a Carpenter ant problem in my house. It started about three weeks ago. We have tried store-bought ant bait and the Aspartame tip to no avail! They hate both. I am going to try the borax and Molasses tip next. I have three cats and a dog, and don't want to spray poison.

Urine Stains on a Mattress

How to remove urine from a mattress... I have a 2 year old sharing my bed, a pillow top mattress and I tried to steam clean it, and all I did was spread the stain everywhere. It doesn't smell. I tried Hydrogen Peroxide, baking soda and a pinch of detergent method and it all clumped up on the bottom of the spray bottle and wouldn't spray! Any help is welcomed!
