In Memory of Suma and Mamiya (Tabby Cats)

Suma, left and Mamiya, right were both taught, with kindness and reward, to do an assortment of tricks. Here they are on a stool "waving to Mommy" in unison. Many people don't realize how teachable cats are.

Suma was 11 and Mamiya 17. Both passed away in the past year, during the imported pet food scandal. They were both tabbies. I got them about 11 years ago. They loved to do tricks and pose for pictures. We spent a lot of time together and I miss them so much.

Keeping Candle Wax Off Your Birthday Cake

I have always inserted my candles in Styrofoam instead of the cake to burn for birthdays. Then the candles could burn longer without getting wax all over your cake. This also works good if you have a ice cream cake, less melt and mess. The lit candles are blown out the same as if it were on a real cake. The Styrofoam works well, just throw all away no mess and no wax on cake either. Works great and cake tastes good too. All works well.

Remembering Your Tips for ThriftyFun

I usually think of good ideas for tips to post on ThriftyFun when I'm in the middle of doing something and will most times forget the idea later. So whenever I think of a tip to post here on ThriftyFun, I have a folder in my computer where I can save my ideas. I'll just write up a short sentence about the Tip idea so I won't forget it, then save it to my "MAIL WAITING TO BE SENT" box OR my "TIP IDEAS TO SEND" folder in my computer. Then later on when I get the time to actually write up the tip so I can post it, I just go into my "Tips to Send" folder, so I can remember all the great ideas that came to me earlier that week.

Mow High and Often

The average person should be able to mow a lawn... right? WRONG! The only time a lawn should be scalped is if you are switching to rock. You want the grass to be a winner, not the weeds or diseases. Mow high and often! Clipping off the seed heads of weeds and discarding plus allowing the grass to start its system of runners gives the grass a chance to choke the weeds out.

Also, a mulching lawnmower means the resulting grass does not need a catcher. However I use pile of grass clippings to block out the sun in areas I want to plant a shrub or plant a flowerbed.

Some "friends" helped me while I was gone. Scalped my yard, raked it to below the level and discarded it all in construction sized black plastic (that don't break down in a landfill in 1000 years). If you don't know what you are doing, please don't help me anymore!

Get Minimum Service on Your Home Phone

I just wanted to share what I recently did to cut phone and internet costs. I signed up with ATT but I chose only the minimum phone line with no extras for $14.95+ tax. I don't need caller ID, call waiting, etc. It was costing me $43.00+ a month just for the phone. I use my cell phone mostly anyway but wanted a land line, too.

I chose the cheapest high speed internet which is $19.95+. I was paying $23.90 for AOL for the past 5 yrs and that was just for the dialup service not including have a phone line.

I chose not to add ATT as my long distance carrier because I have unlimited weekend and after 9:00pm calling on my cell phone. I just call on the weekends or after 9:00pm.

I purchase long distance calling cards at Dollar Tree, 99 minutes for $1.00. Of course, they don't let you use them at pay phones, I don't think, but that way in case of an emergency, I can call someone during the day or if I'm on vacation and don't want to use my cell phone minutes or am close to going over my cell phone minutes, etc.

I also send these cards to my friends and relatives in letters or cards so they can call me on the cheap. You never know if someone's financial picture can keep them from calling or not. But those 99 minute phone cards can let us stay in touch more often. A lot of my friends and family never heard of Dollar Tree until I tell them in my letter and phone calls so I am spreading my frugal tips that way too.

Use Old Inner Tubes for Staking a Tree

Save your old ruined bike inner tubes. The make great tree holders when staking a tree, and require no cutting. Simply take the tube, fold it in half so that the 2 looped ends are together. Place around the tree and then drive your stake through the loops and your set. The wide rubber won't damage the tree like a rope would.

It's Summer, Time To Get Into Shape

It's that time of year when everyone is running around panicking because soon they'll have to wear shorts or a bathing suit. Here are some tips to get yourself in shape without costing a fortune.

Gyms

Gyms are horribly expensive but usually have summer deals. If you are determined to join a gym, go in several of them and see if they will give you a week's pass for free (most places will do this). You can accumulate free weeks of free gym time if you visit 3-4 gyms in your area. Afterwards, let the gym know you're low on funds and that you want the best deal. Compare. Sometimes if you tell one gym the other gym is going to give you a better deal, they'll make their price better. It can happen! So wheel and deal with gyms otherwise you'll end up spending a small fortune. Also check out the "Y" and University Gyms. Those usually have decent summer rates.

Frugal Exercise

If you decide not to join a gym but still want to get fit:
  • Buy or acquire a decent bike (try freecycle.org). Bike to work, bike to school. Bike to the store and carry your groceries. It's a simple workout
  • Walk everywhere. Walk as many places as you can. Climb stairs instead of taking the elevator.
  • Do more chores around the house that require lots of physical work (vacuuming, scrubbing....)
  • Garden! Take an hour after work to pull weeds, shovel some dirt and perhaps mow the lawn.
  • Fill up bleach bottles with water and use as weights. The bottles have a good handle!
  • Buy a used or free treadmill, stationary bike or elliptical. Set it up at home and do 30 minutes 3 times a week. Definitely cheaper than going to a gym!

Yoga

Most yoga studios with either give you a free intro class, or offer a "first-time" fee for about $10. This is a good way to try out different yoga places in your area. Most communities also have classes set up for about $50 for once a week for about 8 weeks. These programs are usually sponsored by the local government, so look in your community guides. Many studios offer what is called a "Community" Class. I've noticed this is offered in several cities I have been to and usually run about $5 a class for 1 1/2 hours. I've even found FREE yoga in once city followed by a meditation and free veggie meal. These are usually offered by either religious organizations or community spiritual groups.

If you are on a limited budget, inquire about your options and let them know. You'd be surprised, some places might give you a few extra classes if you purchase a punch card or sign up for a class.

Buying A Yoga Mat: At first I looked for a free Mat on Freecycle but had no luck there. Kijiji.ca sold one for $5. In the end, I decided to purchase a mat/carrying case and DVD for $30. Seems a bit pricey at first but since I can not afford to attend yoga classes more than once a week, I use the DVD for other days which has wonderful 20 minute workouts.

Also try this website that offers a free yoga dvd download: http://yoga.org.nz/yoga_vidoes.htm

Or download an audio podcast: http://www.yogadownload.com/podcast.asp

So go out there and get healthy for free, or at least for cheaper!

Refill Travel Shampoo Bottles With Your Favorite Brand

We all have those pesky small shampoo bottles from hotels. I decided to use one of them as an experiment after it was empty. I filled it with my favorite shampoo. If your little one has a pint-sized chair he or she likes to sit in to watch his/her favorite shows, try placing a child's step stool next to the chair to use as a side table. Vegetable Dishes Brighten Summer Menus
By The American Institute for Cancer Research

No matter what the season, you can never have too many healthy, easy-to-prepare vegetable dishes. In summer, when local gardens and farmers' markets have produce aplenty, you can establish a broad repertoire of recipes drawing from the many fruits and vegetables in season. August's fare is particularly delicious and abundant. This is the time of year when, left to its own devices, zucchini can become large as a baseball bat. If you grow zucchini in your garden, you'll need a variety of recipes to use up the supply.

Zucchini and bell peppers are particularly versatile. Both are low in calories and have flavors that blend well with everything. Select small zucchini, which tends to be younger and more tender than the bigger ones. It can be prepared in many different ways: sauteed, steamed, grilled, or stuffed and baked. Its blandness makes it a perfect foil for other flavors, and its sturdy texture makes it a good base for a soup or a stew. In this recipe, the zucchini is sauteed for a mere 2 to 3 minutes, to maintain both flavor and innate crispness.

Bell peppers, available in most grocery stores in what we tend to think of as the standard green, are also available now in yellow, red, orange and even purple. In fact, most sweet peppers start life as green and change colors as they mature. Red is the sweetest of the bells and is actually a fully ripened green pepper with a milder flavor. Sweet peppers are an excellent source of vitamins A and C as well as the mineral potassium. The peppers add color and crispness to this recipe, which ends up being a beautiful medley of red, orange, green and yellow. It brightens any plate, whether you choose to serve it with other vegetables or a small portion of poultry or fish. Keep in mind that the New American Plate model, advocated by the American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR), features scaling back the proportion of meat to one-third of the plate or less, so you can have room for a whole grain mixture and another vegetable dish to fill out your meal.

Fresh corn kernels, lightly sauteed, add to the interesting texture of the dish, topped off with toasted almonds. Nuts contain healthy mono- and polyunsaturated fats, vitamin E, protein, magnesium, potassium and dietary fiber. The trick is to use them in moderation because they are high in calories. The good news is that a mere two tablespoons of lightly toasted almonds add just the right amount of satisfying crunch to the overall dish.

Marinated Peppers and Zucchini with Almonds

Ingredients

  • 1 Tbsp. extra virgin olive oil, divided
  • 1/2 red bell pepper, seeded and thinly sliced
  • 1/2 orange bell pepper, seeded and thinly sliced
  • 1 small zucchini, cut in half, then thinly sliced horizontally
  • 1/2 cup fresh corn kernels, cut from the cob, or 1/2 cup frozen corn kernels, thawed
  • 1 1/2 tsp. apple cider vinegar
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • 2 Tbsp. lightly toasted sliced almonds

Directions

Heat 1/2 tablespoon of olive oil in a non-stick skillet. Add peppers, zucchini and corn and saute over high heat for 2-3 minutes. Remove from heat and place in serving bowl.

In a separate small bowl, whisk together remaining oil, vinegar, salt and pepper. Pour over vegetables and gently toss. Serve garnished with almonds.

Makes 4 servings.

Per serving: 80 calories, 5 g. total fat (<1 g. saturated fat), 8 g. carbohydrate, 2 g. protein, less than 2 g. dietary fiber, 8 mg. sodium.

Get The Most Of Your Propane Tank

We used to return our empty gas tanks for our BBQ grill to the local retail store and exchange for a new filled tank. Now, we just take out "empty" tank to the local propane company or to a local store that sells propane to fill our tank for us. Because it might not be completely empty and why give the remaining propane away. You'll conserving what you already have and unknowingly saving $$.

Hydrogen Peroxide For Blood Stains

To remove blood stains from clothing spray with Peroxide, brush or rub in, and rinse, or wash in cold water. I always spray Shout on the blood first if the blood has dried. But the peroxide is what cleans the blood out. Peroxide is what hospitals use to remove blood. It is also very inexpensive. You might do a test spot first but I have not had any trouble with the coloring of the clothes being damaged. This will also work on wash cloths, towels, etc.

Dear Webby's Joke of the Day

Mrs. Jones was reading a letter at breakfast. Suddenly she looked up suspiciously at her husband.

"Henry," she said, "I've just received a letter from Mother saying she isn't accepting our invitation to come and stay, as we do not appear to want her. What does she mean by that? I told you to write and say that she was to come at her own convenience. You did write, didn't you?"

"Er, yes, I did," said the husband. "But I couldn't spell convenience, so I made it risk."

Keeping Dog From Going Under Trailer

Our dog got a puncture wound and a 2 in. long slit in his skin from something in the back yard. This is a fenced in back yard. We've checked the fence for protruding nails, the swing set for protruding screws and all that's left is a trailer with some brush on it. Possibly he went under the trailer and snagged himself on the metal.

The vet doesn't have any ideas either from the shape of the wound. A friend suggested a wild animal attack, but that would mean a squirrel or a bird did it, and that's not possible given the severity nor the type of the injuries. So, what do you suggest that we put under the trailer (which is just an open wagon) to keep him from crawling underneath or near it?

Vet said he's going to be ok - drain out in 2 days and stitches out in 10. Poor fellow.

I was just wondering if you have any tips on a moisturizing conditioner to use. I heard that I should only us conditioner so I have been for a handful of years.
