Amy (Black Lab)

Amy is a 1 year old Black Lab. The family got her for my better half, Tim, a year ago as a Christmas present as he had lost his 17 year old lab the year before.

She LOVES to retrieve ANYTHING! The day we brought her home, at 6 weeks old, she kept bringing Tim her rawhide bone. This picture is a daytime nap. Amy was about 6 months old in it. At night, you can tell when she is really ready to call it a night. She gets on the bed (yes, we let her sleep with us, or should I say she lets us sleep with her)...then she will turn over on her back, tips her head sideways, and that's how she sleeps every night!

Today's Tips:

Crape Paper Wrapping for Teenagers

Except for 1 brother my siblings and I are all now grandparents. Each Christmas I make the little ones special bags specified to each one of them. Last year I struggled on how to make my 3 nephews, who are teenagers something just for them. I bought crepe paper (streamer type) and started wrapping. I layered candy, gift cards, cards, fishing lures, etc... They're gifts looked funny but they had a great time unwrapping their gifts. Fun for everyone!

Preserving Your Christmas Tree

I preserved autumn leaves for a Thanksgiving centerpiece by spraying them several times with heavy duty hairspray.
Now I read (on Marie Clair's website, I think) that hairspray has been proven to be the best way to preserve your Xmas tree, although they do warn that it makes it more flammable! I am going to try to spray my greens that aren't in water already.

Avoid Holiday Spending With Envelops

To avoid using credit cards and over spending during the holidays, I use the envelope system. I write each person or event on an envelope and every pay day I put in $5 or $10, just depends. I put the envelopes in order of importance and a certain amount. I take my change and put it in there and when it adds up to $1 or more I take the change and replace it with the dollar bill.

But the best thing about this is I put my name on an envelope too. I place myself in the back so I am last in line, but I buy myself something special during the after holiday sales.

Inexpensive Holiday Decorating: Candy Canes

In last minute budget/economy Christmas decorating - don't forget candy canes! They are colorful, come in several sizes and can be had at the dollar store! (You can even save the ones unopened in cellophane for next year!)

I put the little ones left over from an Christmas celebration on my tiny apartment tree. Just the right size! And I also added some to my pine bough arrangements! Easy to hang on.

Mix CDs for inexpensive Gifts

Make someone special a CD of music. Blank CD's are super inexpensive. You can make all sorts of mixes. You can choose songs that relate to memories you have shared with people, songs that remind you of a person, etc. You can even customize the CD labels and cases for occasions and holidays. Music is a great way to express how you feel and is very personal yet inexpensive.

Salvage Damaged Christmas Cards

Recycle Christmas cards!

My daughter was pulling out her Christmas decorations yesterday and found a partial box of unused Christmas cards she had sent out a couple years ago. The picture on the front is so adorable and she said "I wish I could remember where I got these so I could buy another box for this year." There were about 15 cards left in her pack, but they were stuck together from the dampness of storage.

I suggested she slide a sharp knife between the pages to separate them, then cut the badly damaged back page off. I told her to use the cute picture side of the card as a postcard by writing a quick note on one half of the back side of the picture and the address on the other half!

Not only will she be able to use these otherwise useless cards, she will also save money on the postage because here in the states a post card still costs less to mail than a letter!

Store Honey in the Refrigerator

Years ago I switched away from white sugar as much as possible. That meant using honey in my coffee and it wasn't difficult at all to get used to. Since then I've used it in bread baking also. When fall arrives in Ohio, temps in my kitchen often fell below 70 degrees and the honey would begin to crystallize. I'd heat it to re-melt but that got old.

I checked honey out on google. Seems its nature is to crystallize between 50-70 degrees F. So, store it in your refrigerator and it never will again. I keep a small supply in a wide-mouth pint canning jar on my counter for daily use. If I decide it is too thick to flow, I simply pop it in the microwave for a few seconds.

Problem solved.

Product Review: I Can't Believe It's Not Butter

Product: I Can't Believe It's Not Butter

Manufacturer: Unilever

A few months ago, I was talking to a mortician. He said the best product to use on buttering food items is 'I Can't Believe It's Not Butter'. These buttery tasting products don't clog a person's arteries like margarine (oleo) or butter. The ICBINB products can be bought in spray, stick or tubs, all in the dairy section at most grocery stores.

Dear Webby's Joke of the Day

As a frequent flier, I get annoyed when other passengers disregard the airline attendant's pleas to stay seated when the plane taxies to the gate. One attendant captured my heart by announcing:

"The captain will be parking the aircraft at Gate 41 in approximately two minutes. I've seen the captain's car. So if I were you, I'd remain seated."

Keeping Dogs from Peeing in Flower Beds

Many, many dogs are walked by my house and lots of them use my flowers and shrubs to relieve themselves. I've asked the owners not to let them, but they seem to think because it's pee it's no big deal. I prune and fiddle regularly, and I DO think it's a big deal touching dog pee. I have some trampled and/or sick looking plants and flowers to boot. Is there something I can put in my beds to deter the dogs since the owners won't respect my repeated requests?

Problems Playing Recorded VCR Tapes

I am having an unusual problem with our 2 new digital VCRs (LG and JVC). All of a sudden, the picture will freeze and the voice will continue normally (LG). Or (JVC) both the picture and sound will stop (picture freeze, no sound). These were recorded on digital televisions. I managed to get the LG working again by unplugging it from the power source and then turning it on again. I thought to do this because when I pressed the eject button, the machine didn't respond. However, the JVC did not have a machine freezing up problem.

I contacted both companies - didn't get any suggestion except to return the VCR. I already returned one and replaced it, only to have this continue. The extended warranties I purchased will not allow multiple exchanges. Could something in the VCR tapes (blank tapes I've been using to record on for a couple of years) be triggering this freeze, like a SEARCH/INDEX button that was pressed years ago but to which the tape is still mis-responding? If so, how do I erase the SEARCH/INDEX signal?

And yet, I can play my tapes with no problems at all for weeks, and then the freezing thing happens. I am mystified. I have about 40 tapes that I record on, and have no idea at present which ones were acting up. I have recorded on tapes that did act up, and the later recording did not exhibit any problems. I am recording free, over the air television. We have a large analog antenna on the roof that receives the digital signals beautifully when we are watching a broadcast. Thanks.

Instructions for Knifty Knitter Long Loom

I bought the Knifty Knitter long loom series and there was no instructions with it. I know I should be smart enough to do it without instructions but I guess I'm not. I have never bought something that didn't have any instructions with it. I also bought the round Knifty Knitter and had instructions on how to make the hat but not the scarf, so I bought this other one thinking it would tell me.

Puppy is Pooping in Cage

My Staffy poops in her cage. My puppy is 15 weeks old and is being trained via a cage. The cage is a large one and I'm wondering if it's too big. She was doing really well pooping and peeing outside. But then, last week she had her injection (because previous owners hadn't vaccinated her) and her vet check. We were told she was slightly thin. We upped her food and since then she has gone backwards and she's pooping in her cage now. Please help us as we are unsure of to what to do.

We have had this palm looking plant in our house for over 25 years. It was about 2 ft high. Now it's getting too tall, up to the ceiling.
