Use the web search engine and type in "braided rug instructions" or "hooked rug instructions". I got some good results.

I use to make them with my grandma. She would take strips of material about 1 inch wide and any length sew the strips together, when it was a workable length we would sew three together and start braiding, when we needed more strips we would sew on more. After about 20 feet of braid we would start a circle and by hand sew the braid into a circle or a rectangle or any shape you want. It was a lot of work but a lot of fun.
Good luck
