Today's Tips

Emergency Cold Pack

If you need a cold pack in an emergency, use a plastic bag of vegetables from your freezer. I especially like peas or corn as they conform to your body area very nicely. Just tap the bag on a hard surface to loosen and separate the frozen vegetable pieces, then lay it on the affected area and you will find that the bag easily conforms to the contour of your body.

Lemon Air Freshener

To freshen the air in your kitchen, especially after cooking fish or cabbage, place a whole, unpeeled lemon in a 300 degree F oven for about 15 minutes, leaving the door slightly open. Turn off the oven and let the lemon cool before removing it. You can also boil lemon rind in water for a citrus scent. If you use the whole lemon make a pot of lemon tea after removing it from the oven by placing the lemon (sliced) into boiling water and add sugar as needed.

Sweeten The Air With Herbs And Spices

Place spare sprigs of fresh herbs directly on the oven rack toward the end of the baking or roasting time. The aroma will stimulate your family's taste buds and welcome arriving guests to the anticipated feast.

Pear Sauce Instead Of Apple Sauce

A dear friend of mine has pears trees but never uses them. I am the lucky one that gets to have them. Getting an overabundance of them has led me to try to be creative with them. I made a large bath of pear sauce by peeling, coring and cutting the pears into small pieces. Then I put enough water to cover them in a saucepan and added a smidgeon of cinnamon and about 1/2 cup of sugar.

Once the mixture started to boil I put the heat on simmer and continued cooking (stir occasionally) until the mixture reached a mush stage. I removed the mixture and mushed it even more with my potato masher. You can serve this as a side dish with pork or chicken. You can also use it in place of applesauce in any recipe you have.

Alternative To Using Mothballs

I pack many of my woolens in a cedar-lined hope chest. The rest of my stored clothing goes into the attic in plastic trash barrels with tight lids. I place 1 or 2 bars or scented soap, unwrapped, in each barrel and have never had a problem with moths or other insects.

Treating Toenail Fungus

To get rid of a toenail fungus, use Vick's Salve. (Vick's Salve has been around what seems like forever.) Spread it on and under the infected toenail. Works like a charm. Much cheaper than buying preparations made for toenail fungus.

Room Odors

Simple method to rid room of odors (i.e. smoke, cats, dogs). Fill a cup (or receptacle of your choice) with clorox and place in a safe location, such as the top of an entertainment center. It will absorb any disturbing odors in your room!

Save on Dishwasher Detergent

Sprinkle Baking Soda on top of dirty dishes, add some on bottom of dishwasher too. The soda will serve as detergent on the first wash. You only need detergent on second wash.

Thank You Note

After an overnight stay with friends or family, I leave a thank-you note and some nice chocolates on the pillow. I think this definitely lets them know I appreciate all they've done as hosts.

Breakouts or Acne - Natural Treatments

Tea Tree oil is perfect for this. You can buy it at health food stores and I know that Bath and Body Works carries small vials of the oil, as that is where I purchase mine. Just put a few drops on a cotton swab and dot the oil onto the pimples. Tea Tree oil is perfect for drying them right up.

Thanksgiving Blessing Snack Mix

* Each ingredient in this snack mix symbolizes something associated with Thanksgiving.

2 cups Bugles brand corn snacks - shaped as a cornucopia, a horn of plenty.

2 cups pretzels - represent arms folded in thanks and prayer.

1 cup candy corn - during the first winter, the Pilgrims were each alloted only 5 kernels of corn per day because food was so scarce.

1 cup dried or candy fruits - Thanksgiving is the celebration of the harvest.

1 cup peanuts or sunflower seeds - seeds represent the potential of a bounteous harvest for the next season if they are planted and well tended.

In a large bowl mix all ingredients together. Other ingredients such as dry cereals, candies, or marshmallows can also be added. Make this mix as a family and eat while discussing each ingredient and how it relates to Thanksgiving.

Making Your Own Cool Whip

I like to make cool whip with a little milk, about 1/3 cup and about a tbsp vanilla and then a little sugar to taste. It doesn't really get as stiff as the store bought but it tastes great over thawed blueberries. it is also great in coffee and over jello.

Killing Mealybugs, Scales, Aphids, Spider Mites, etc.

Alcohol kills mealybugs, scales, aphids, spider mites, white flies, slugs, and earwigs by acting as a surfactant, or wetting agent, that can penetrate an insect's waxy coat of armor and kill on contact with the body. Isopropanol (rubbing alcohol) works fine and is easy to find, but be sure it doesn't have additives. Ethanol (grain alcohol) seems to work best. Alcohol usually comes in 70 percent strength in stores (or 95 percent strength purchased commercially).

To make an insecticidal spray, mix equal parts 70 percent alcohol and water (or if using 95 percent alcohol, mix 1 part alcohol to 1-1/2 parts water). To kill mealybugs, dip a cotton swab or cotton ball into alcohol and wipe off the infestation.

Epsom Salts for Plants

Epsom salts works wonders for houseplants because the magnesium sulfate helps cleanse the soil of harmful salts that tend to accumulate in the pots.

Give your roses a growth spurt, water them with an Epsom salts solution in May, and then again in June.

Mix two tablespoons of Epsom salts in a gallon of water, apply half of it to the soil in May, the other half in June. Epsom salts provide magnesium, which will stimulate growth.

Organizing the Pantry

I always had a hard time getting to things in the back of my pantry. My husband finally decided to just put everything into plastic bins, the shallow kind made for under the bed storage. They can be pulled out to be looked into and slid back into the pantry with minimal rearranging!

Winterizing Your Home

To help heat our home, we winterize by covering all the windows with the plastic made especially for them. We also make sure that our door thresholds are not leaking air and that our door have good weather stripping around them. Also, we keep our furnace turned down incredibly low because we have found that a good electric heater used in our main living area keeps us nice and warm during waking hours and at night we snuggle down in warm pj's and heavy blankets to sleep. Saves us big on heating bills!

Bug Wipes
By Reba Gayle Shurden

Ingredients:

1/2 roll of BOUNTY paper towels (the others turn to mush)
1 cup Avon Skin So Soft Orginal Woodlands Scent Bath Oil
1 cup water

Directions:

Cut roll of BOUNTY in half with serrated or electric knife. Place cut side down in airtight container. Boil water-add bath oil-remove from heat and pour over paper towels. Remove cardboard tube. (removal is much easier when wet)

To use: pull wipes from center and rub all over body before dressing OR on exposed parts.

I use a Folger's plastic coffee can for my container. It's the PERFECT SIZE!! To use: fill with cold water and 1/4 cup white vinegar and let sit overnight, this removes the coffee smell.

These wipes are not at all greasy and are even safe for babies. One wipe goes a long way and they have kept off all the biting and stinging bugs Mississippi has to offer! Check out my other wipe recipes on this site!

Tea Party Ideas for 6 Year Old

I need ideas for a Tea party of a 5 year old turning 6. I came across a post over the weekend that I thought was at this website, where someone posted an idea for a Tea Party. The craft was decorating hats, using peanut butter sandwiches. I can't find the post. Could someone help me find it or share some ideas.
