Humanitarian Aid Mission in Afghanistan

I used a longer focal length of my lens to isolate the subject, and black and white to take away color distraction. I mostly use 80-200mm Nikkor to blur out the background and it also gives me the opportunity to shoot from far away. The Afghan kids in this photo were reaching out to US Army soldiers, who handed out toys on a Humanitarian Aid mission in Afghanistan. Nikon F5, Fujifilm 800, 24-85mm Nikkor. Afghanistan, 2005.

Hillbilly Survivor

This is a cute idea for a birthday or anniversary gag. We used them for a Hillbilly survivor, there are many themes you could use with these hats. You just get some wire and punch a hole through the bottom of the can and take the wire from the bottom out thru the top. Then poke it thru the hat and twist it. The miniatures were just wire wrapped around them several times and then the wire was punched thru the hat and twisted.

You could use other cans than the ones we used for a Mt. Dew fanatic or Pepsi, etc. Then on the felt birthday hat we glued caps over the roses and attached miniatures.

Uses for Empty Tic Tac Containers

Tips for reusing those plastic containers that tic tac breath mints come in. Post your ideas.

Refill them with cinnamon hearts or other small candies that will fit; much cheaper than buying new containers. Bags of candies can fill a heap of these containers!

Make travel size containers for these items:

Bobby pins, hair pins and hair clips.

Travel case for aspirin, Tylenol, etc. (Be sure to label the container).

Tooth picks.

Small sewing kit.

Gossip Joke

Mildred, the church gossip, and self-appointed monitor of the church's morals, kept sticking her nose into other people's business. Several members did not approve of her extra curricular activities, but feared her enough to maintain their silence.

She made a mistake, however, when she accused George, a new member, of being an alcoholic after she saw his old pickup parked in front of the town's only bar one afternoon. She emphatically told George and several others that everyone seeing it there would know what he was doing.

George, a man of few words, stared at her for a moment and just turned and walked away. He didn't explain, defend, or deny. He said nothing.

Later that evening, George quietly parked his pickup in front of Mildred's house ..walked home....and left it there all night.

You gotta love George !!!

Keeping Weeds out of Flower Beds

Over the past several years I have become very careful with the environment and what pesticides and the like can do.

When I want to make another flower bed, instead of spraying roundup, I put down several layers of newspaper and plant the items, and then mulch. Works everytime and is much safer.

Prices Are More at the End of the Aisles

While shopping recently, I noticed 2 different pricings for the same item, I was about to purchase (waxed paper). On the shelf, where it's always kept in the paper bag, plate and plastic bag aisle, this product was priced at $1.07 per box. But on the endcap or display at the end of each aisle (a few aisles over) the very same size box of waxed paper was $1.17), a dime higher because of the convenience of not having to walk to find it elsewhere in the store. So don't fall for these marketing ploys. Also, watch out for those special holiday baking displays, as well. Take the time to go hunt for the items in their original places down the aisles to make the most of your hard earned money!

By Terri

Editor's Note: I will certainly keep my eye on this. Generally speaking, avoiding the end of the aisle items is a good tip. From time to time, you can find great sale items at the end of the aisles but most often they put junk food and convenience items there.

Purchase Your Clothes Off Season

Purchase your winter time clothing in the summer months, if at all possible, you can save yourself big bucks. Recently, while in a thrift store, I was searching for summer time blouses & shirts. I noticed a lady was looking through the sweaters and jackets. When I inquired, why in the heat of summer was she doing this. She replied, "I save more money shopping for winter time clothes this time of year than waiting to purchase them till cooler and colder weather. They raise the prices on these items as the weather starts turning."

By Terri

Editor's Note: Check clearance racks, now is a great time to buy short sleeve shirts and shorts for next spring and summer.

Puzzles as Wall Decorations

Strapped for cash, but wanting to hang pictures on your walls? Buy attractive puzzles at your local dollar store or thrift store. Put together & decoupage them. Attach a wall hanger or place in a picture frame. Also, look for pretty pictures in magazines & books, frame them as well.

Emigrant Direct Bank Reviews

I think about setting up an account with EmigrantDirect instead of using my linked savings account that I have with my checking account. 3 to 4% interest is way better than my savings account. Does anyone have any experience with Emigrant Direct's online savings account?

Thanks,
Ruth D.

Internet People Searches

How do all those Internet 'people' searches get our personal data? Is there a way to opt-out and not have our personal data available on the internet 'people' searches? Does anyone know if a opt-out option is real (legitimate) or a scam (just a way to collect our personal data)? Always wanting (internet) privacy control. Thank you.

Beef and Chicken Stock Tastes Like Vinegar

I had an over abundance of frozen beef and chicken stock so I decided to can it to free up some space. I brought it to a boil, poured it into my sterile jars and then did a 10 minute water bath. I have opened both the chicken and the beef stock and they taste like I added vinegar to them. Can someone please tell me what happened?

Chocolate Milk on Car Upholstery

My daughter's sippy cup leaked chocolate milk all over my brand new car! Does anyone know how to get the stain out? I'm afraid to make it worse by trying a bunch of things and would really appreciate the advice. Thanks in advance.

Homemade Christmas Presents

I've just moved to my first home and money is a little tight. Could anyone give me tips how to make my Chrsitmas gifts this year. I don't have a lot of money to spend but I would like my presents to look nice.

My (fairly large!) family are very generous at Christmas and I want to give something that looks good but costs the minimum. I am interested in quick, simple and easy ideas. Please help!

Cleaning a Used Mattress Set

I am going to buy a used mattress set from the local Goodwill store. I just wondered what is the best way to "clean" this set when I get it? I plan on putting a mattress cover over the mattress once I clean it. However, I do want to sanitize it as much as I can before I do that.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Cleaning Tile Floors

I have a Florida room that I keep my 4 (don't ask) little dogs in at night. The floor is tile and I have to mop the floor every day. What is the best way to mop this floor that will neutralize the smell?

Also, does anyone know, what is the best way to keep the dogs from "using" the floor of this room as their potty? They have a doggie door that takes them right to their dog pen. Should I try taking their food and water away from them at night or what?

I am at my wits end. I love them all but the constant cleaning is killing me. They are all adopted so I will not get rid of any of them as they are my babies.

TIA
Cookiepom

Sponge Mobile or Centerpiece

It's amazing what a little creativity and imagination can do with some very simple items. The sponge mobile is a fun project for a rainy afternoon with kids. Depending on how it's hung or stood, the dancing butterflies, hearts and stars can play above a cradle or stand in the middle of a kid's birthday party table.
