Fixing a Washer That Won't Spin

In the last spin cycle, my washer made a breaking, grinding plastic noise. I opened lid and after a minute of this noise it stopped spinning and the motor was still running? It agitates, washes clothes, drains water out, but will not spin? I have to fix it myself. Anyone have any ideas as to what my problem is?

It sound like the belt broke, If you can turn over the washer and see if it did take to old belt and replace it with the same one, new of corse, it is not hard to do. be careful to unplug the washer first and get a person that has the strength to turn it over for you, I hope this helps and God bless you.

Remove the cap off the agitator, flip back the top of the console, remove any nuts keeping the tub in the console. There will be a clutch ring that needs to be replaced.

Whirlpool Washer Fails to Spin Out at Times

I have a Whirlpool washer that does not spin out at times. The water drains and it will go through the cycle, but the tub will not spin and it smells hot. If I turn the agitator and turn it back to the spin cycle it usually works? Any clue as to what may be causing the problem?

We had this problem with an old land lords washing machine. It sounds like the transmission has seized up. They tend to do that more on the spin cycle than any other cycle. It's an expensive fix & doesn't last long and the transmissions are rebuilt. The repair man told us it was best to buy a new one because it is so expensive. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. I hope this helps & good luck.

Fixing A Washer That Won't Spin

I need help on finding what's going on with my washer. It won't spin and I am not sure where I can find the info on fixing it myself.

RE: Fixing A Washer That Won't Spin

It might be the coupling. That is a 3 piece kit that goes between the transmission and the motor. I found the directions how to do it over the internet, got the part and fixed it myself. The directions were quite clear. Sorry do not know where that was any more. As a matter of fact, I've done it a couple of times for myself and once for a friend. (06/23/2008)

RE: Fixing A Washer That Won't Spin

Our washer at work stopped spinning, and it was just the liitle plastic clip like thing that fits in the hole. It is the clip that stops the washer when you open it during the spin cycle. Part cost like $2. (06/23/2008)

If it is a fairly new one, (mine's an 06) you might need to reset it. We had a repair man come out and charge us $50 dollars to simply unplug it and reset. To do this, you need to unplug the machine for about 1 minute, then plug it back in and open then close the lid 7 times. If this does not work run the washer on small load without any clothes. Sometimes soap builds up and makes the agitator get stuck. (06/24/2008)

Top loader, look under the lid there is a plug sticking down which goes into a hole that operates a switch, close the lid and lean on it. At that point if the cycle starts, that's the problem. Just lengthen the plug I put a piece of plastic tube over it, no more trouble. Good luck. (06/25/2008)

My top loading washer won't spin and is making a really loud popping sound, like some thing's slipping. What could this be?

RE: Fixing a Washer That Won't Spin

Call an appliance repair person. I did, for this exact same problem. One house call, 20 minutes, and he replaced the part and I was good to go. It did cost $100, but if you know nothing about washing machines and don't have access to replacement parts, it is well worth it.

The part he replaced commonly wears out (my machine is 10 years old) and is an easy fix for someone who knows what he is doing. This guy knew exactly what to bring as I described the problem over the phone, had specialized tools for the job that he had made himself, and knew how to get into the machine with no fuss or mess or moving things around. It was a joy to watch him work, and well worth the money for the peace of mind in having it done right. (02/08/2010)

Fixing a Washer That Won't Spin

My washing machine spin cycle won't work, unless I get it going by helping it spin. Then it will slowly build up to top speed, but won't get started on its own.

If you can't find the answer to your problem, search out more websites by using the Google search engine. If you find it impossible to repair it yourself, and if the washer isn't too old, call in a repairman. (03/03/2010)

RE: Fixing a Washer That Won't Spin

Mine did that last year. My transmission went out on it and I had to get a new one. Who knew washers had transmissions? I did some Google searching before I called the repair guy. A broken motor coupler that could be the culprit, and if you look online you could find out how to repair it, if you are handy. (04/14/2010)

RE: Fixing a Washer That Won't Spin

I just replaced my timer when it started skipping things it should have done. It was a simple 10 minute job, I got the part on the internet. I called and talked to Maytag to make sure I had the right part number for my washer model #. (07/21/2010)
