I am looking for a solution to cleaning my no wax floor which has turned yellow under a rug. Can you please help?

Thanks,

Margie.

Editor's Note: This request was in response to a Linoleum request so I assume she is referring to a No Wax Linoleum floor.

I have used Johnson Floor Stripper and then resealed with High Speed Floro Finish. However, I am in the process of redoing the floor (every other year) and cannot find these products. Linoleum is not vinyl and people keep pointing me to products that are for vinyl. Good luck,

Does boiling water and oxy clean work? Does sunlight work-how long does it take if direct light is on them daily? Does clorox extra strength work or mineral spirits or ammonia and where to buy mineral spirits? My apartment floors have stains from rubber mats in bathroom and kitchen floors and they are trying to charge ME for it when I think if it's in the vinyl fine print to beware of rubber rugs, it's their issue not mine. To re-rent the apartment there is no time to wait for them to change back. Any workable solutions or suggestions?

Wow. I just spent an hour looking up how to get nicotine stains off of linoleum. When taking my rug up, I just figured it had worked like a sponge or something (heck, I don't know!) and concentrated my cigarette smoke into that one area - but over a few months? It seemed a little extreme. So, I guess it's only due to the rug itself?! That's nuts - why does it even have a backing on there like that? I'll try to keep the rug off for a while and see if natural sunlight will work, as it takes a direct hit from 2 windows daily. Thanks a ton - I'll let ya'll know if this works! :)

I have recently heard that amonia works to clean the yellowing linoleum. I am going to try it myself to see how well it works.

I have had the same foam backed rugs on my linoleum for over five years and just this past year they have yellowed my floor. Also, the white foam backs on the rugs are also yellow. I have read about Clorox and mineral spirits. Any else tried this or is it permanent?

I have two bathrooms with linoleum flooring. One bathroom I have placed rugs with rubber mat underneath and the other bathroom rugs do not have the rubber backing.

Both bathroom floors have yellowed under the rugs. Admittedly the floor with the rubber backed rugs are more yellow. So whats the answer, no rugs on linoleum? What alternative do we have?

DO NOT BLEACH! Using full strength bleach on vinyl / linoleum floors can actually damage the floor. I used Clorox to clean up spilled chicken juice in my kitchen, and it left a dull patch on the floor. No more shine. I have tried many things to get the yellowing stain off my floor, it is permanent.

I have the opposite problem, my white linoleum or vinyl Tile has turned yellow every where except where it has not been exposed to the Sunlignt from the overhead sky light.

If it's linoleum that you have, then the yellowing you're seeing is due to the linseed oil (the major ingredient in linoleum) coming to the surface. The way to cure this is to simply take the rug off and expose the area to light. It could take a few hours or a few days, depending on the amount of light you can get to the affected area. Natural light works the best. Cleaning will not make the yellowing disappear. Hope that's helpful!

Oxy clean with boling water works very well, Just mix 1/4 cup to a gallon of very hot or boling water.

The problem you are having is not from the rug being on the floor. builders these days use lower end vinyl floors that tend to yellow when anything is laid on them, including carpets (of all types of backings), cardboard, plant pots, etc. These floors are only designed to be down for 5-7 years expecting the home owner to either want a change or to sell the house. The upper grade linoleum floors rarely have a problem of this nature.

I have the same problem and was searching the net for a solution. It's funny that every house I have lived in my entire life has always had linoleum and we have always used rubber/vinyl backed rugs. I have never had this problem before until building a new house 5 years ago. It must be a new chemical manufacturers are using. I will try the bleach, I've tried everything else, including the magic eraser.

ive tried full strength clorox several times , didnt work. i tried the mr. clean magic eraser, didnt work. ive tried vinegar and baking soda, didnt work. ive only one thing left to try. that is the mineral spirits. i hope this will work ,as it is getting expensive, and tiresome. you see where my rubber backed was by my kitchen sink and a pipe under the sink came loose and the mat got very wet ,and we didnt notice for a couple of days. so i think that made the problem worse. so if any has more ideas, pppplease let me know, im desperate, was new lanolium. thanks s.moore

Be careful of those teak bath mats as well. I bought one, had it on the bathroom floor and it created streaks where the feet touched. Looks like pee stains. To add to the fun, the bath mat is molding and the whole reason I bought this was because people said it would stay cleaner longer. The rumor mill is working overtime it seems.

I first tried the Mr Clean Magic eraser. It didn't do anything. I then tried the Chlorax full strength. It took a couple of applications and it is nearly white. i will do it again tomorrow and I'm sure it will be completely gone. One nice thing is that it did not affect the grey square line nor the green diamond pattern. Thanks for the tip and I know I will be sharing this around.

If its "floormat damage" the trick is to bleach it back. I tried the recommended one part chlorine bleach to three parts cool water but it didn't work. I then went full strength Chlorox and let it sit for 45 minutes. I washed it off then kept repeating the process until I got the floor back where I wanted it. It may take many applications so be patient, its better than buying a new floor.

Why is it that we don't know of rubber backed rugs yellowing our vinyl until it is too late. We built a new house and had vinyl laid in our kitchen and bathrooms. Now we have yellow areas on all of our flooring. When we contacted the store they acted like we were the dummies and that everyone knows that you shouldn't put these rugs down. After talking to everyone I know, I found that no ones knows. The store stated to us that if we read the fine print of our warranty, it says it there. What harm would it be for the sellers to mention this when you purchase the vinyl?

I spilt some brown haircoloring on our linoleum floor. Any ideas on how to remove it?

I read on line that because linolium is of a natural source, when shaded from the sun, i.e. under a carpet it tends to turn Yellow, However, once the yellow patch is uncovered and exposed to sunlight, it will eventually return to its original colour

There is no solution, but to replace your floor or cover over the spot with a non-rubber backed rug to hide it again. The rubber backing has caused a chemical reaction that has ruined your vinyl floor.

Do you mean Mineral Spirits removed your flooring or it removed the rug stain? I was so happy to see your posting about Mineral Spirits, but when I researched it on the internet it said Mineral Spirits can be used to remove linoleum flooring. I just wanted to make sure you meant that it removed the discoloration on the flooring and not the flooring itself before I go buy the product. Hehehe. ;)

This chemical reaction is permanent.
The only solution is to replace the tile or get a bigger floor mat and glue it to the surface.

Have you tried the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser? It just might work. It's a chemical free thing you can try.

Never place rubber on vinyl flooring. A chemical reaction between the rubber and the vinyl will cause flooring discoloration. This is irreversible.
