Daily Thrifty Tips - May 23, 2005

Daily Thrifty Tips
Volume Four, Number 128, May 23, 2005
http://www.ThriftyFun.com

Hello,

We have a really long newsletter today. We didn't have space to publish the recipes in their entirety today but we provided links to read them on the website. Be sure to look over the recipes, they look great. Being a monday, we also have over 20 new requests that were submitted over the weekend. Be sure to look those over.

So far so good with the new server. We still are working on the site redesign which will help a lot as well. Hopefully we can launch that sometime this week.

I hope everyone had a nice weekend. If you are looking for something funny to read on a daily basis, be sure to check out Dear Webby's Humor Letter. http://webby.com/humor He publishes numerous clean jokes and also shares one of our thrifty tips with his readers each day.

Thanks for reading,

Susan

Tabitha's Deer Party

A tip to throwing a great party for humans and animals. Lots of food.

Tabby is 13 years old & she loves to go outside even when it is cold. She was very inquisitive about her deer friends. And they were her.

I adopted Tabitha from a pet store when she was 4 months old. I have moved a couple of times. This country home is by far her favorite. Very quiet & peaceful here. Tabby likes to bring Mom & Dad presents to the door. Moles & mice. She likes to bird watch.

Make a Photo Storage Box

This is a great and very cheap, an almost free craft to do. I called around to shoe stores and got a ton of free shoe boxes. Then I went and picked up free sample books at a wallpaper store. I decopauged it onto the shoe box to make a photo storage box, but you have to use acid free paper on the inside to line the box, it will protect the photo's and they won't fade. I use scrapbooking paper. Have fun :-)

Today's Tips

Getting Organized in the Morning

We all have times we feel unorganized. When this happens, the first thing you do in the morning is get your coffee, tea or diet cola ready, and make a list of at least 6 things you COULD get done that day. Then prioritize by numbering the items in the order that will serve you best. JUST DO IT

Instead of Post Its

I always have trouble with post-it notes. They keep falling off and losing their "sticky". So I made this handy note holder that is small enough to post a note anywhere it is handy. Just take a large size plastic egg, the kind you find at Easter that you can open and is hollow. Cut a slit in one half of the egg. (I used a band saw, but I think an electric knife might do the trick.) Set it next to your monitor to leave important reminders. I have been using old business cards to write the reminders on.

Making a Placemat Tote Bag

Buy a beautiful quilted placemat from the clearance table, fold in half and stitch the sides up, add a handle (you can purchase webbing by the yard at a fabric store and it works fine) and you have a great new tote bag. If you want to be fancy, line the bag with fabric that complements the placemat material.

Raising Money for the Church Joke

A minister was preoccupied with thoughts of how he was going to ask the congregation to come up with more money than they were expecting for repairs to the church building.

So, he talked to the organist to see what kind of inspirational music she could play after the announcement about the finances to get the congregation in a giving mood.

"Don't worry," she said. "I'll think of something."

During the service, the minister paused and said, "Brothers and Sisters, we are in great difficulty; the roof repairs cost twice as much as we expected, and we need $4,000. more. Any of you who can pledge $100. or more, please stand up."

Just at that moment, the organist started playing, "The Star Spangled Banner."

Removing Dried Nail Polish

This weekend my Daughter and I were going through clothes for a yard sale. She found a top she'd hidden in the closet since last fall because she'd gotten bright pink nail polish on it. Not really sure if it would ruin it or not we used nail polish remover on it and washed it out. There's not a trace of it and the color is as bright as ever.

Make Your Own Wedding Invitations

I have submitted several articles with tips on projects to save money on a wedding. Sure,it's more convenient to hire things done for your wedding, but the money saved can be applied towards a nice honeymoon or the living expenses that come after this day is over.

One way we saved money was to print our own invitations as well as the wedding programs. We purchased card stock paper from Walmart for the programs, and the invitation paper I just happened to come up on at a yard sale. They were even textured with cala lillies. I used a hole punch at the top and tied on a tiny white satin bow. The only drawback I would say,is the ink used, but we were able to do both projects for probably half the price of professionally printed invitations alone.

It gives you a real sense of pride knowing that you did-it-yourself!

Old Video Tapes
By Mr. Thrifty

Well People! It looks like DVD's Are The Next Greatest Thing, so what do we do with our old broken Video Cassettes now?

One thing if you got the patience most videos can be either fixed or the tapes transfered to other unwanted videos. It takes patience and steady hands.

Other ideas?

1. You have at least 1 winder wheel which can be used for storing strings ribbons wires or whatever can be wound up

2. The hard plastic of the cassette itself can be used as a support either flat or standing as the underpart of displays like on a Chistmas or holiday display.

3. The video taken apart you can find assorted parts which creative people might be able to use in other projects. The screws that hold the Cassette together might be used in other small type construction.

4. The box the Cassette came with maybe a small gift box

5. A wall note pad and pencil or pen keeper.

6. The heavy Plastic Video cases could store anything from office supplies to a pretend purse and make up case for your children

7. These cases are about the size if some paperback books.

8. My last idea The cassette itself. It would be a neat place to hide money or valuables. Who would even want to look through 20 or more Video's when they broke into your home?

I hope others have more ideas, because I have got a lot of Videos.

Thank You,
Mr. Thrifty

Colic Remedies - Tip for Colicky Babies

I know that new Mothers are VERY hesitant about anything us OLD FOLKS reccommend, but honestly this works. Doctors aren't there when a young mother is dealing with a screaming baby. My Mother suggested this when my oldest had colic for nearly 3 months.

She suggested putting a hard peppermint in HOT water and letting him take 2-3 drinks of it from his bottle. He'd let out a huge BURP and it would give him relief. Believe me, I used this with my other two, and they're still alive!

Words That Women Use

I got a cute email today I thought I'd share:

WORDS WOMEN USE:

"FINE" this is a word women use to end an argument and you need to shut up!

"FIVE MINUTES" if she is getting dressed this is half an hour. Five minutes is only "Five minutes" if you have just been given five minutes to watch the game before helping around the house.

"NOTHING" this is the CALM before the STORM. This means "something" and you should be on your toes. Arguments that begin with "NOTHING" usually end in "FINE".

"GO AHEAD" this is a dare, not permission, DON'T DO IT!

A LOUD SIGH although not actually a word, the "loud sigh" is often misunderstood by men. A LOUD SIGH means she thinks you are an idiot and wonders why she is wasting her time standing there arguing with you over nothing."

"THATS OKAY" This is one of the most dangerous statements a woman can make to a man. "THAT'S OKAY" mean she wants to think long and hard before deciding how you will pay for your mistake.

"THANKS" This is the least used of all words in the female vocabulary. If a woman is thinking you, do not question it, just say,"You're Welcome" and back out of the room slowly.

Funnel Cake Recipe - My Favorite Recipe

Everybody LOVES Funnel Cakes! I happen to have an easy recipe.

Ingredients are:

  • 2 eggs
  • 1 1/4 cups milk
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 2 packages (5 1/2 oz each) Martha White Flapstacks
  • Confectioners sugar

Directions:

Heat about 1 inch of oil in a skillet to 375 degrees. Beat eggs well in a large mixing bowl and add remaining ingredients. Stir until batter is smooth. Holding opening of a funnel covered with your finger, pour 1/4 cup batter into a wide mouth funnel. When ready to fry release finger and run batter in hot oil using a slow, wide circular motion and maintaining as steady a stream as possible.

Fry, turning once, until golden brown, 1-1 1/2 minutes on each side. Drain on a paper towel. Repeat until all batter is used. Sprinke generously with powdered sugar. Best served warm. Makes 10 large.

TIPS: If batter is too runny, add more pancake mix being careful not to get it too thick. It should run out of the funnel freely. Make sure grease is at least 375 degrees so they will cook fast and not absorb so much grease. Let cool a little while before dusting with powdered sugar since the hot funnel cake can dissolve the sugar. A dash of cinnamon in mixture makes them spicier or you can drizzle with syrup. The funnel you use should have a 3/8 inch opening.

A great treat for the family!!

Evergreen Shrubs Turning Brown

Last year I planted some evergreen shrubs. They are planted from 6 feet to 8 feet a part individually. They are about 3.5 feet tall. Something is turning them brown from the inside out. I have already lost one. Now the other 4 are "catching" the same thing. Someone please tell me what it is, what the cure is, and will it spread to the rest of my plants? I reside in N.W. Wisconsin if thats relevant.

FASHON FN206474

We are looking for one double roll of a discontinued wallpaper from FASHON of Toronto Canada. The pattern number is FN206474. This is a vinyl coated fabric in a bathroom design. It has a solid white background with repeat pattern of shells, seahorses, etc. in shades of Blue, Brown and Purple.

Any assistance or leads would be appreciated, the room is 95% done and we ran out!

Reusing Down Feathers

I have a number of down pillows and wonder if anyone knows a company or service that would convert them into a comforter for me? Perhaps the quantity will need to be supplemented? Perhaps an individual specialty small business is where I'll find help? Thanks,

Giving a Cat a Haircut

My cat's very long hair has become matted over the past couple of months. Since it's so hot here in Texas now, I wanted to give her an overall short haircut to clean her up and keep her cooled off. I have some electric clippers with various size combs on them, but I can't come near her with those. She's terrified of the noise and vibration. Any ideas? Thank you,

Fixing a Push Button Toilet

This has been bugging me for a while. I'm sure the answer is laughably simple, but I just dont see it. I have a problem with the cistern on the toilet, it is easy to fix, if I can just lift the lid off the cistern. Before you laugh, it isn't as easy as all that as it is one of those with the flush button in the middle of the lid, and when I try to lift the lid, the button mechanism stays attached and won't lift. I'm afraid of pulling too hard and breaking something. Where is the screw to loosen the lid or did the installer glue the whole thing in place as a long term practical joke?

401k Match and the Credit Card
By David Mulonas

Many employers offer a 401k plan as a source for retirement. 401k is the best plan available and you should always take advantage of it especially if there is a match involved. Since the match is free money you can't let it slide by. How many things can you think of that are free in this world? Now on the flipside if you have a credit card, it is probably charging interest and that eats into your disposable income. Therefore it must be paid off. Remember if you can't afford something, don't buy it.
