Baby Shower Decorating Ideas

Instead of the traditional "decorate the mommy to be's chair," I decided to decorate a whole table for the Mommy and Daddy to be. First, we made a balloon archway above the table. I covered the table with a pretty tablecloth with Baby written all over it.

I added one framed 5x7 inch photo of each of the parents to be when they were babies. Each of them had a rubber ducky picture on them as well, since that was the theme. I added two 8x10 inch printed and framed scrapbook pages each with a picture of the mommy and daddy as babies individually with cute sayings like "Natalie's Mommy and Daddy when they were babies" and "Natalie Marie's Mommy and Daddy."

I added a yellow ducky bucket filled with pink flowers to the center to add color. Yellow and white streamers twisted around the top of the table. Then added homemade vases with pink flowers in them on the corners of the table for more color. On the front part of the tablecloth where it hangs down there was a 8 1/2 x 11 inch sonogram picture of the baby with the saying "All of God's grace in one precious face" Also a Daddy and Mommy to be sign in front of their respective seats.

Two more scrap book pages were added one on each side of the Daddy and Mommy to be signs. On one pillar I printed out the funniest pictures of the parents to be together, (as adults) that I could find. One after they had a mudfight and both were covered in mud. Another I took this past Thanksgiving where they both had "grills" in their mouths, trying to act "gangsta" but in a very goofy way. On that one, I wrote "Are you serious? This is my Mommy and Daddy?" This one was too cute!

The other pillar had a scrapbook page of both parents when they were babies. We also arranged the guest tables in a large U shape facing the parents to be table. It turned out quite nice and was something different. Everyone seemed to like it.

Laundry Table Top

My husband and I just purchased and had delivered a new front load washer and dryer. We have 4 children and us in the house and all of us (yes the kids do their own laundry) using the washer and dryer. We got to thinking how much money we spent on these, only to have things put on the top of them and getting scratched.

So we built a usable "table top" to store laundry detergent, softener and other items as each of us are using the washer and dryer. It is made of wood. We used felt to cover the wood and better protect the surface of the washer and dryer. Then we covered with a fabric of choice. We used a homespun fabric that matched our home decor. We are also going to be covering the top with some kind of plastic sheeting to protect the fabric from getting stained and dirty that can easily be wiped down.

Use Q-Tips to Apply Goo Gone

I absolutely LOVE the product Goo Gone! I use it a lot! I have discovered a very economical way to use this product. First, I buy the large package of cotton swabs at the Dollar Tree for $1.00. There were 300 swabs in the package that I purchased.

Second, you can find a small bottle of Goo Gone also at the Dollar Tree. When I need to use Goo Gone, I simply put the tip of the cotton swab at the opening of the Goo Gone. I put just enough Goo Gone to fill the tip and begin using the loaded cotton swab on the stickiness that I need to remove. I use the stem of the swab as my tool to work the sticky off the surface.

If I don't need to use the other end, I just pop the swab into two pieces and discard the used side. I save the other end for the next time.

Source: Me. I hated getting the stickiness on my hands and knew that there had to be a better way and not waste so much of the product.

Use Pillowcases for Dirty Clothes When Traveling

Carry two pillow cases with you when you travel. Use the first to put your dirty clothes in (assuming you don't have access to a Laundromat) and place the second pillow case (if you're in a hurry) between your dirty clothes from the night before and your clean clothes.

Ask Cemetery Groundskeepers To Save Gardening Supplies

Think green when starting seeds in the Spring! I went to local cemeteries around Memorial Day the year prior and had the groundskeepers save the packs and trays, for me! It saved me from having to buy them!

Also save money on a tomato trellis by asking them to save wreath holders too! Their perfect for putting over tomato plants and tying with pieces of old pantyhose as they grow!

Home Recipe for Ear Mites

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup warm water
  • 1/4 cup of white vinegar
  • 1/2 tsp. Boric Acid
  • 2 drops Tea Tree Oil
  • 2 drops dish detergent

Directions

Put ingredients into a glass jar and shake to mix well. Using a couple of cotton balls, dip them into the solution and place the cotton ball(s) into your pets ear, one ear at a time. Quickly close the ear flap over the opening and using your fingers rub the ear in a circular motion. Do this for about ten seconds so the solution has a chance to penetrate the ear.

Take the cotton balls out and stand back a bit because your pet will shake their head immediately! I use another clean cotton ball to dry around the opening to the ear. It will be yucky! Do the same for the second ear.

Follow this routine once a day for a week and then once a week from then on to prevent mites from invading your pet's ears again. Works wonderful!

A note: Boric Acid is available from your pharmacist. No prescription needed, by law they have to keep it behind the counter, just ask. It runs under $3 for a container that would last forever. Share with a friend!

Preventing Lumps in Polenta

I recently tried a recipe that I found on ThriftyFun for polenta with black beans and salsa. In the directions for cooking the polenta, it says "add cornmeal to boiling water very slowly to avoid clumping". My mother taught me another way when I was a youngster.

I thought this tip could be helpful to anyone else cooking polenta. Measure the cornmeal and place in a small bowl. Stir in cold water; just enough to completely moisten the cornmeal. Then stir quickly into the boiling water. Continue to stir until it is cooked and very thick; no clumps and no lumps.

Source: I have to give credit to my Mom who is now 87 years old.

PS. The black beans, salsa and polenta was delicious! I did add corn and a couple fire roasted green chilies to the recipe.

Make Cookies on an Electric Griddle

I'm recycling this tip, but thought it was so good I had to submit it!

Take your store bought or homemade (yummy) cookie dough and "bake" it on a electric griddle. Especially good when you don't want to heat up the kitchen on a hot day or just want a few cookies. Cook for about 5 minutes on each side, crunchy on both sides and yummy soft in the middle! I would imagine the temp would be something close to the oven temp, but since all appliances are different and the kitchen variables make a difference too, play around with it.

Dear Webby's Joke of the Day

When the family car developed a slight knock, the husband asked his wife if she had bought regular or premium gas, but she couldn't remember.

"You probably got the cheaper gas," he said. "That could account for the engine running so rough."

"No, the gas wasn't cheaper!" she replied indignantly.

"Well, how much did it cost?" asked the husband.

"It cost the same as always," said the wife. "I bought the usual ten dollars worth."

Ideas for Bland Stir-Fry

I recently made stir-fry from a recipe. It was pretty simple: tofu, onions, peppers, tomatoes, mushrooms, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and basil. I stir-fried it for about 15 minutes. The consistency was pretty good, a tiny bit on the dry side. But the taste was bland. I've made stir-fry in the past with similar results. What can I do to make my stir-fry tastier?

What is This Item?

I have found an unusual item but can not fathom what it is. The "serpent" is four inches long. The mouth opens up about 1/2 inch and has what looks like a hole punch but it isn't! There is an indentation on the lower jaw that the hole punch type thingy fits into nicely but it isn't a stationary press as there is no engraving or monogram as one would expect. It is too small to crack any nut so it isn't a nutcracker. It is made of iron and heavy. I am lost on this one! Thanks.

Kennel Cough Home Remedies

Does anyone know a way to get rid of Kennel Cough? My Boxer took off about two weeks ago and the Humane Society picked him up. They charged us an unreasonable amount to get him back. We understood that part, but now the 7 puppies and the female have what we found out was kennel cough.

We ended up taking the male to the vet to find out what was wrong with him, but this was before we found out every other dog we have now has it also. We cannot afford the treatment for all the dogs, and don't know what to do. I really don't understand how the Human society cannot tell someone for the dog's sake that he has been around many other dogs that have this issue.

Our vet told us this was not the only dog that has come from that place with the same issue. Anyway I am not going to go on about that, I just need to know how to get rid of this horrible issue. The dogs look to be in pain with this horrible cough. Please help.

Uses for Leftover Fabric Scraps

I have a ton of fabric pieces in fairly large sizes. I purchased a ton of them for using as clothing on my sculpture art dolls, I'll never be able to use it all up on those! Wedding Reception Party on Anniversary

I was married on Halloween of '08. We had a cute little ceremony. There was just 8 of us all together. My husband and I didn't have any family there seeing how it was on a Friday, plus we got married so quickly there wasn't enough time or money.

I was thinking about having a reception party the night of our anniversary, if it doesn't sound tacky. Could anyone help me out with any suggestions? We are on a budget but want our families there to enjoy our happiness together. My color scheme was red and black with a bat motif. Please help!

Potty Training a Puppy

We have a Patterdale/Cairn puppy that we have had for 2 months. She is around 6 months old now. We are having major issues potty training her. We managed to train her quite quickly to pee on newspaper near the door to outside the house. Yet, she continually urinates on her own bed.

Now, she won't go outside at all. We realize we are partially at fault in that we have trained her to go in one particular spot inside as it has been freezing outside and none of us want to spend hours at a time outside with her.

We've tried putting the newspaper outside, standing outside telling her to do her business for up to an hour at a time, for her to come inside and do it on the paper straight away. We have stopped rewarding her for going on the paper in the hope she will learn to go outside. But still, nothing.

Electrical Outlets Stopped Working

For the last 3 years, the electrical outlets in my 1/2 bath (1st floor) and 2nd bath (2nd floor) have not worked. This occurred around the same time that I was replacing the standard outlets in my home with updated decorator ones where you can't see the screws.

I've checked the circuit breaker panel (in my basement utility/laundry room) and can't see where anything is tripped. One of my neighbors mentioned that maybe I need to have the "grounded" outlets that have the breaker/test switch on them. Or might I need to replace the breaker switch on the panel in the basement? Any help would be appreciated!

Severe Back Pain

I have pain in my back that seems to start in the lower back and goes up to the middle of it. I have no pain radiating down my legs. My husband can squeeze my back (like a bear hug) and get my back to "pop" and it does provide some relief. If I walk (say I go grocery shopping), after about 5 or 10 minutes my hips start hurting, then my back hurts.

I also feel like something is "pushing" on my back and making something hurt inside of me. Almost like whatever is out of place is causing some pain in my upper torso (inside). Rest and certain kinds of back popping seem to be the only thing that helps. I can take aspirin, Tylenol, Advil and the pain does NOT stop. It will subside some, but doesn't stop.

I saw a physical therapist twice a week for a month and learned back exercises. I do my back exercises around 3 to 4 times a week. They also do not seem to help or make any difference. I like the exercises, but they don't fix the original problem. I think something is misaligned.

I have slight scoliosis in my back (since I was a teenager). Awhile back the chiropractor told me that I have some arthritis in it (when I was in my late 20s). To me, this doesn't feel like arthritis. It seems to hurt when I move certain ways. Like my hips or something is out of whack.

The physical therapist did put my pelvis back into place and that did remove a lot of the pain. But I'm still having some pain. When I sit in a computer chair I feel like my back needs to be popped. I go for a walk and after a few minutes, my hips hurt then my back starts in. It's really starting to stop me from enjoying life.

I'm only going to be 40 this year! I'm not that old! My question is this. Who should I see about this? A chiropractor? My regular family doctor again? Should I go back to the PT (physical therapist)? Maybe I should go to someone else? My husband had a herniated disk and saw a neurosurgeon for it. I do not think I have a herniated disk though. I think something is just "off".

Please help! I feel like a 90 year old and a 90 year old probably doesn't hurt as much as I do. Thanks!
