Getting Family Members to Help Around the House?

My kids and hubby rarely help out around the house. Does anyone have tips and ideas for getting family members to pitch in?

Easy... you set them down and talk to them. Explain that the house is everyone's home and it will take everyone participating to maintain it. Also explain the consequences: you're first priority is a clean house. When the house is clean meals will be made. Until the house is clean no one eats. You'll be amazed at how fast things start getting done when you ask. Eventually you never need to ask because they just know :)

Put your foot down and tell them you are not their slave. Tell them what you will do which is probably cook. No one should have to do for someone else what they can do for themselves. You should not have to clean up after any adult. I don't know how old the kids are but your husband needs to start doing his share.

Disregard the protests. Tell them you will throw their stuff olut if they don't pick it up. Somewhere along the line you gave them your power. Take it back!

Oh and one more thing..tell your husband you are his wife not his mother and he is treating you like his mother.

I used to set aside a few minutes after dinner and ask everyone to pick up/put away/straighten up 5 things. It only takes a couple of minutes and then they're done.

After a few days of everyone picking up only 5 things, the house starts to stay a lot cleaner.
