Spot (Beagle)

Spot is 2 months old in the picture. She is a beagle. We went to a farm with our four year old daughter. We then went to see the puppies and told her she could choose one. She was so very happy and because the dog has some spots, she named her Spot. "See Spot run".

She likes to figure out a way to get outside so she could run. She is a runner and anytime she has a chance to escape, the takes full advantage.

Spot is now 6 yrs old. This is her puppy picture.

Strawberry Shortcake Princes First Birthday

For my daughter's first birthday, I decorated her highchair with bright pink velour fabric and I bought some pink "tutu" fabric and ribbon and layered the fabric to look like a princess's throne. Her birthday was decorated as Strawberry Shortcake Princess. The whole party was so cute.

Craft Project: Race Car Game

This game is simple to make and fun to play. It will also give your kids practice in addition.

Approximate Time 30 minutes

Supplies:

  • cardboard box
  • wrapping, craft or "news" paper
  • cellophane tape
  • marker
  • scissors
  • stickers, decorated and blank
  • toothpicks (optional)
  • small play vehicles

Instructions:

1. Cover the box with paper. Use tape to secure the paper to the box.

2. Draw several doorways along one side of the box and cut these out.

3. Decorate the box with stickers. If you like, you can attach some stickers to toothpicks to make little racing flags and then stick them on the box.

4. Place a blank sticker above each doorway. Write a different number on each of these. This will be the number of points a player receives if his/her car goes through this doorway.

5. To play, each player pushes a car toward the box. If their car goes through the doorway, they get that number of points. Each player takes five turns with their car, then adds up their points. The one with the highest number of points after everyone has had their turn is the winner.

Garden: Tropical Pitcher Plant

I was shopping one day and I always have to go to the garden department. There it was a Nepenthes-Tropical Pitcher Plant, had to have. Florida and under my live oak tree it has found a home. It love the humidity and bugs, both thing I don't. Rain water is what it likes. That gives me a chance to work on my rain barrel, but that's another picture and story. So it likes bugs, humid rainy weather, with filtered sun from my old oak tree.

Update from Connie

I would like to let everyone know that I had another scan of my body this past Friday and the cancer is now in remission. The scan showed no spreading of the cancer, thank goodness. I'm to have another check-up in two months and will be seeing a new oncologist for the continuation of the check-ups or anything else that will be required.

I'll also be offline for a while as I'm moving from Arkansas to Missouri, to a city/town called Liberty. Will be busy getting new doctors, drivers license, and all that other good stuff when moving to a new state. I'll be closing down on the 30th of this month, July. I'll try to get back online as quickly as possible. Wishing everyone a blessed day filled with sunshine, love, and happiness.

Marking the Water Jug

My husband and I saved two milk jugs. One is used for water and the other for kool aide or juice drinks we mix ourselves. Because I found the water jug would be empty sitting in the refrigerator half full (your refrigerator works harder to keep a half jug cold.) I put a black mark on the jug to remind my husband and grandchildren when it time to refill the water jug. No more yelling, "Who did not fill back up the water jug."

Keep Bookmarks Inside Eyeglass Case

Here's a handy idea if you are a reader and seem to have problems keeping bookmarks handy. I found an old soft eyeglass case I wasn't using (the kind with the opening at the top.) I found that it holds all of my bookmarks nicely and doesn't take up much space! I keep in in my nightstand and I never have to search for a bookmark.

Alternate Liquid for Colonoscopy

Before I had my colonoscopy, my Mom gave me the name of a product to purchase at the drug store. I took this product to the Dr. going to do my colonoscopy and asked if I could drink this product instead of the big jug of product he was handing me.

He took my product and read it, and with a funny look on his face, said, "Where did you get this?"

I replied, "at the drugstore."

He said, "No, what I mean to say is, 'How did you know about this product?"

I said, "from my Mom, she was able to use this instead of the big big jug of stuff, for her colonoscopy."

He shook his head and said, "Yes, by all means, go ahead and use this, Thanks for letting me know about this!"

So I got out of using the big jug of stuff, Thankfully! The name of the product is called: Evac-Q-Kwik bowel cleansing system, (saline laxative. It's sugarfree. Lemon flavored.) One 10 oz. bottle is all it takes. Its manufacturer is Savage Laboratories. For your next colonoscopy, hope you're able to find this product, too!

Baby At The Beach

It's the time of year to take little ones to the beach. However, sand and babies don't mix. I find a 2 ring blow up wading pool is perfect. It's compact to the from the beach, safe, clean, and you can even make padded round sheets and blankies for the inside. If you don't want ants or sand bugs to get inside, sprinkle a mixture of 3 parts cinnamon and 1 part cayenne pepper, around the perimeter. Baby won't get any in their eyes or mouth, and the mixture can easily be mixed into the sand where it's harmless to fish or any pets that might lick it. Keep an umbrella handy to shade the wee one, hooking the handle around one of the rings. You can even make a little "survival" bag with sun screen, a pump, toys, etc.

Source: I came up with this idea when someone asked if putting a circle of talc around the baby would work. No, it's harmful if eaten or put in eyes. This is much safer and very cheap.

Shop Holiday Clearances For All Year Round

Shop stores after holiday clearances (New Year's, Valentine's, Easter, 4th of July, Halloween, Christmas) for greatly reduced items to put away for next year celebrations or to use as gifts throughout the year. Keep in mind solid color items can be used at other times of the year. This can pertain to dinner napkins, giftwrap, candles, etc. A solid red giftwrap bought after Valentine's could be used for birthdays, Christmas, etc.

Look for items in a champagne color, these could be used for anniversaries, Christmas, etc. Same goes for discounted holiday candies such as M and M's. Open the bags, pour the candies in a dish, separate them colors, repackage them, like colors together and ID the package and freeze or keep in a dry place till your next holiday or gift giving event. No one needs to know you purchased these items on discount. You'll be saving lots of money this way.

Electricity Savings 101
By Kelly Ann Butterbaugh

There are more than a few ways to keep the electric meter from spinning at an alarming rate. Some require a little electrical inventory, such as turning off unused appliances or switching to Energy Star appliances. However, others take a bit more creativity and planning.

Go Solar

It requires a little initial investment, but it's all savings from there. Outdoor lighting may provide safety for a home, but it also requires electricity. Opt for solar lights instead. Reasonably priced sets of solar lights can be purchased and stuck in the ground for ample night light without any further expense at all. For those who tried solar lights years ago, they have improved and now stay lit for most of the evening, even charging on cloudy days.

Alternate the Air

For those who have window air conditioners, the electrical meter is spinning as three or even four air conditioners work to cool a home. Rather than run all air conditioners throughout the day, opt for a rotation. For example, let the one in the dining room work to cool the neighboring rooms for part of the day, allowing ceiling fans or floor fans to circulate the cool air. Then, turn on the air conditioner in the living room and let the one in the dining room rest. Simultaneously, accept the house temperature at 78 degrees rather than 73 or even 75 degrees. You'll see strong savings and little difference in the air quality.

Another option is to evaluate the need for bedroom air conditioners to run during the day. Many of us don't use our bedrooms during the peak heat hours, and we could save some by turning the air conditioners off during the day and closing the bedroom door. Simply turn the air on an hour before bedtime; the time of day provides cooler air, allowing for more efficient cooling. Remember, if an air conditioner is running, it's using electric.

Turn It Down

Electric water heaters (and gas for that matter) use a great deal of energy. Try to save energy by setting the temperature on your water heater a bit lower - ideally at 120 degrees F. Not only will it save electric, but it will prevent scalding accidents as well. When you're planning to be away on vacation, turn the water heater off or adjust the setting so that energy isn't being wasted heating water no one is going to use.

Keep Cooking!

Cooking can have serious effects on the temperature of the home, and by alternating the cooking method you can save more energy than you thought. In the summer, the use of the oven or stovetop adds excess heat to rooms that air conditioners may be working to cool down. Opt for a cooler method of cooking such as the microwave, a crock pot, or a toaster oven. All emit less heat into the air, and they use less electric to cook food than the average electric oven or range.

Reuse Produce Bags For Bread, Meat And More

The thin, clingy plastic bags available at grocery stores for fresh fruit and vegetables are nearly indispensable at home.

I bake bread (high fiber whole wheat)e very five days or so and put a cooled loaf in one of them.

If you buy meat in bulk and want to divide it into meal sized portions they are also very good; because they cling so close and are flexible, you can squeeze out the air to avoid freezer burn although in my case the food is used before freezer burn sets in.

You can also put garbage scraps in them to seal in the odor to avoid attracting animals.

A to Z Coupon Organization

I'm a coupon clipper and user. Finding the coupons by categories as they are set up in the little folders one can purchase caused too much fumbling and wasting of time as I was trying to find coupons for items that were on sale. I solved the problem by turning the section dividers around and changing them to alphabetical dividers with a felt-tip pen. Now I arrange the coupons according to the first letter of the name of the product--ex. Jimmy Dean sausage would be filed under "J." Now when I'm shopping, I look at what's on sale and pull the coupon. Voila! A double savings.

Dear Webby's Joke of the Day

A preacher retired and moved to the country to enjoy life and practice his hobby of yard work. Needing a lawn mower, he headed into town to buy one. On the way he saw a sign advertising a lawn mower for sale. He stopped at the house and a young lad came out to greet him. The preacher asked about the lawn mower and the kid said it was behind the house. The two went to look at the lawn mower. The engine was sputtering along at idle speed. The preacher increased the speed of the engine and mowed a few strips. Satisfied that the mower would do the job they settled on a price of $25.00.

Later in the day, the young lad was riding his bicycle when he spied the preacher pulling on the engine starter rope. The kid stopped and watched for a couple of minutes. He asked, "What's wrong?"

The reply came, "I can't get this mower started. Do you know how?"

The kid said, "Yep."

"Well, how do you do it? Tell me!", the preacher yelled.

The kid replied, "You have to cuss it."

The preacher rose up indignantly. "Now you listen here. I am a preacher and if I ever did cuss, not saying I have, I've forgotten how to do it after all these years."

With a wise look on his face well beyond his years, the kid said, "Preacher, you keep on pulling that rope and it'll all come back to ya."

Cat With Excessive Shedding

I help out at my local humane society, especially with the cats. Because the cats are often from abusive homes, or are very scared to be in the shelter, they shed non stop! Brushing does no good, since cat hair is so fine that most brushes don't pick it up. Right now there is one white cat that sheds so much, after I'm done petting her I am literally covered head to toe with hair!

The cats are too traumatized for anything like a bath, but they also are less likely to be adopted if they shed so bad that you can't see straight. Does anyone know a good way to help rid this white cat of all the extra hair? I've been trying a wet paper towel before I pet her just to remove all the extra hair, but it only helps a tiny bit. I cannot afford any expensive brush or potion from the store, and neither can the shelter. There must be a simple, homemade way to get this extra hair off of th cat, and me! Any help?

Putting Money From CD Into IRA

I made a really stupid mistake a while back. I closed an IRA upon maturity to move it to another bank with a better interest rate. I got a check for the full amount, took it to the other bank, and mistakenly (and stupidly) opened a CD instead of an IRA. This account now matures tomorrow and I need to know what to do with the funds at this point. Can I now close the account and re-open it as an IRA? Thanks for any suggestions.

Does My Other Dog Have Parvo Too?

I recently lost my puppy my Daisy. She was fine Friday and by Sunday night she passed. We tried Gatoraid to keep her hydrated in case it was Parvo. Nothing worked. Today he hasn't eaten and did throw up his food this morning. He has only had dry heaves since then. I gave him Pedialite and made him broth but he won't eat it. I did give him antibiotic Amoxicillian. I'm afraid to got to sleep. Any suggestions? Can we really pull him out of this. I can't even imagine loosing 2 dogs. Help!

Bull Mastiff Puppy Eats Everything

I have an 8 month old bull mastiff and he is eating everything! I recently bought him a bed for his crate and he destroyed it. I know puppies chew and what not, that's not what concerns me. We buy him toys for him to chew on but he seems to like to destroy our things. What do I do? It's getting to the point where we want to sell him because he just won't stop no matter how much we try to teach him not to. Crating doesn't work, I would need to crate him 24/7.
