Craft: Snow Man Soup

You will need a frosting bag from the cake decorating aisle, dry mix, mini marshmallows, fabric or fleece for scarf, fabric glue, pom poms and glue dots. Fill bag with dry mix (use Carnation instant breakfast for white or hot chocolate for brown mix), add mini marshmallows at the top and close with twisty tie. Add glue for decorations and dry. Add pom poms with glue dots for earmuffs. Cut fabric for scarf and cut either end for the fringy scarf look.

Makes a great gift for the bus driver or teacher with Christmas or Valentine's Day. We made them for the whole class as a treat in school.

Craft Project: Braided Fabric Heart

This can be made for any holiday just by changing fabric, so it's really universal. It's great for using up scraps, too. It's basically strips of fabric that is braided and shaped into a heart.

Approximate Time: 1-2 hours

Supplies:

  • 3 strips of fabric 12 to 16 inches long and 3 inches wide
  • Hot and low temp glue gun
  • Ribbon of your choice
  • Fake flowers, buttons, embellishments of your choice.
  • Bulldog clip or rubber band.
  • needle and thread to match colors
Depending on your choice of fabrics, you can use cotton, a blend or a synthetic. If you want something thicker, a nice polyester works well.

Instructions:

Fold all three strips in third lengthwise. You can press if you want, or just "roll" them into submission! You can whip stitch them closed, or cool temp glue them, but leave a couple of inches on the end "free" so they flair. Most of the time, however, they stay in place till the project is done. Then, bind one end with a bulldog clip or rubber band. Braid all three like you would hair.

When you have the strips braided, measure the middle, and fold it at that point. You can sew or glue just enough of the fold to keep it as the center of the heart. Once it is cool you simply bring each end down and secure with a rubber band or some hot glue and a ribbon. Then, you can add flowers, buttons, more ribbon, pearl strings, or any other embellishment of your choice.

You can give these, keep them for yourself, or make them to sell. The size can be adjusted for something as large as a door decoration, or as small as a pin for a lapel, backing with fabric or felt so the pin back won't show.

You can make them for St. Patty's Day, Easter, and all the other cool decorations. Just because it's the shape of a heart doesn't mean it's just for Valentines Day!

Note: I like hearts that are not so pronounced as this one is. In other words, I now make them with just a hint of a center, or sometimes make the center at the 45% point (just off center) so that each side is just a bit different in size. The country hearts are that way, and I love the "more natural" shape. It is completely up to you!

In Memory of B'Louie (Procambarus Alleni)

B'Louie was a five year old Blue Crayfish (Procambarus alleni) at the time of this photo, but no longer with us. She is missed!

When a friend of a friend gave us a 55 gallon fish tank, we were delighted to receive a blue crayfish with it. "His" name was Louie, but we learned that it was a female, so we renamed her "B'Louie" which sounded a little more feminine! I had never seen such a vibrant blue creature!

Although B'Louie is no longer living, I remember her habits well. She loved to come out from her hidey-holes and wave her claws menacingly at passing fish. She was also fond of shrimp pellets, bits of raw potato, and the occasional green pea. She would spend most of her time poised at the entrance of her favorite cave, as in the photo, ready to dash out as soon as food was forthcoming. She also liked to move aquarium gravel from one side of the tank to the other.

I had never known that crayfish could be kept as pets, nor that the blue coloration occurs naturally in some species as a mutation similar to albinoism. Blue crayfish like B'Louie are available at some pet stores and by mail order over the internet. She is the species "Procambarus Alleni" but other blue species are also available. Crayfish make excellent aquarium pets, and I'm sure that from now on, we will never be without one in our tank!

Try Preen for Cleaning Clear Shower Screens

I just finished cleaning my clear shower screen that was covered with soap scum and mold. I have not been able to get it back to a clear screen since we moved in several years ago but finally after using all types of cleaners from natural to chemical I have found the answer "PREEN" Laundry clothes stain remover, brilliant. This is a product in Australia - hope you can get it in the US.

By Jo from Kellyville NSW Australia

Editor's Note: A quick google search seems to indicate that Preen and Vanish are from the same company. I believe Vanish products are available in the US, and certainly in the UK.

Simple Household Bookkeeping System

I keep every receipt (utilities, grocery, medical, etc.) in a plain legal sized envelop labeled for the month (Example: Jan 09) until the end of the year. I keep them in a drawer with my bank statements.

At the end of the year you will have 12 legal envelopes the same size as your 12 bank statements. I bundle them with rubber bands. I begin a new check register each January 1, and stop with Dec. 31. I put the check register with the bundled envelopes.

At the end of the year I store them in plastic totes. On the envelope I will write whether there are important receipts for items which could possibly need to be exchanged like a new appliance.

I have done this for over 20 years.

Coupon Organizer Kit as a Gift

For Christmas, I made a dear friend of mine a coupon organizer with a bag, what better gift with this economy! Anyhow, I started with a 5x7 photo album, included a mini notebook, calculator and pen and then a "green bag" or canvas bag to put it in.

When you leave to shop, you just keep your book in there and you will never forget! Saves lots of money clipping coupons, and by putting them in a photo album you can clearly see them and flip to the ones you need. Saves time and money and your coupons are always handy!

Helping Elders Run Errands

In these hard times, we need all the help we can get to make money, gas and food last. I live very close to my mother in law, and we also have a couple of elders that live close to us. So we have a day for each person to do the running around for the whole group. Like going to the store, pharmacy, and to pay bills.

I am sure that some people already do this, but maybe some of the younger people have not heard of this. Plus it gives us a chance to catch up on friendships, and look in on the elders. We thank you ThriftyFun for all you do. Have a great day.

Protect Surface of Pressed Powder Makeup

When using a pressed powder compact which comes with the powder applicator, the top of the powder gets a hardened slick surface on it. This is caused by storing the powder "puff" applicator in the case next to the powder. To prevent this hardening, which makes the powder almost impossible to apply, simply put a piece of foil, waxed paper, or thin plastic between the puff and the powder.

Source: I just learned this from a friend who worked in the cosmetic department of a local department store. In all the years she worked at the job she never realized why this hardening of the surface happened. Only recently did she come up with this idea and it works! The latest compact I bought, I tried this and so far the powder looks like new.

Anything With a Slick Surface Can Be a "Whiteboard"

You can make little "white boards" to use while working with kids or for them to use in the car with any pieces of cardboard that are coated with a slick surface. Or use a piece of metal painted a light color. I recycled several different surfaces, including slick portfolio covers and an old magnetic play board, to use when I was tutoring a lot. Use pens meant for white boards with them, of course.

Turn Old Sweaters Into Leg Warmers

Leg-Warmers are back in style & can easily be made from the sleeves of old sweaters, even sweaters with holes! Just turn the sweater inside-out and cut the seam out at the arm-hole using sharp scissors. Next unravel the sleeve (from the top down) until the top is straight & level all around.

If you know how to knit or crochet, just loosely put one loop over the next (all around) until the area is "bound off" If you don't know how to knit or crochet just sew or (using fabric glue) tack each loop of yarn down inside the sleeve.

You can make your leg-warmers shorter by just unraveling more of the top (or cutting the yarn off, then turning it in, then zig-zagging or hand stitching) If you need to make the leg-warmers thinner, simply turn them inside-out & sew a seam up the inside then zig-zag & cut off excess. I, myself leave the extra piece on & just tuck it down inside and tack it. This is good for a little extra warmth but adds bulk.

For washable leg-warmers use acrylic sweaters, but for super-warm ones, use wool sweaters! For kids sizes, use kids sweaters! ...I've made lots of these using sweaters from thrift stores and they SURE are warm and help keep your legs dry when it snows! Sometimes I'll even spray silicone on them as an added water repellent!

Homemade Yogurt for Intestinal Disorders

I made a batch of yogurt and took a container to my sort-of shut in neighbor, she CAN get out but rarely does. She called in a couple of days and asked if she could pay me for some more yogurt. I made a batch and took it all over to her. She came to my house (first time I had ever seen her outside!) and was all smiles.

She's a very prim and proper lady and had a hard time telling me this but felt she should so that it may help other people. She said the reason she hardly ever got out was that she had such terrible flatulence she couldn't be around anybody. She stopped going to church and dropped out of her ladies club and just stayed at home alone UNTIL she ate my yogurt! All I can figure is that something in the active culture in the starter container of yogurt I purchased helped with the problem. Whatever helped was greatly appreciated by this very kind and gentle lady who had suffered for years.

I'm going to order a Salton yogurt maker for her, buy the starter, and give her my recipes so she won't need to depend on me. I don't know why it worked but am just grateful I could have a part in helping. How about that!

Use Muffin Tins for Cooling Racks

The other day I was baking brownies and I realized that I couldn't find my wire racks for cooling. With only a few minutes until the brownies were done, I scrambled around looking. Never did find the things but used two muffin tins instead. I just placed them upside down on the counter and set the brownie pan on top.

Painting a Linoleum Floor

Does anyone have experience with or tips for painting a linoleum floor? I've been told by the folks at a leading home improvement store that it's possible but may not hold up to wear. It's the kitchen floor.

Getting By on a Low Income

I like many other people are struggling financially. but unlike many others I have been in this boat for well over 5 years. I pay for my own health insurance. I own my car and condo outright. But I am living paycheck to paycheck hoping the next check will be enough and it never is. I keep having to borrow from my savings account. My good friend is helping me with telling me which bills to pay and when as I don't have the organizational ability to do that.

She has been doing that for 2 years and I haven't learned anything from her about how to do it myself. I don't go to movies, beauty salons, or other fun things. I see many people on relief and assistance and they have such nice clothing, have their hair done and here I am living honestly on only the money I earn and money a friend will give me every now and again. I can't get by and am having a really hard time. What else can I do?
