Craft Project: Cow Diet Reminder Fridgie
Here is another vintage Diet Reminder Fridgie. This cute little cow is easy and fun to make. Something the kids can help with, and it makes a nice little gift with a humorous message.
Supplies:
- Brown Foam
- Scrap of white or grey foam
- Scrap of pink foam
- Black Sharpie
- 6MM wiggly eyes
- Red and Black Sequin
- 1/4 inch ribbon
- Tacky White Glue
- Magnetic strip (cut with scissors)
- Alphabet Macaroni
Instructions:
Print out the template (make 2 of the cow). I prefer card stock because it is easier trace around. Lay patterns right side down on the foam and trace around them with a black sharpie. The reason for this is so that if any of the line remains when you cut them out, the lines will not be visible to your finished craft. Cut out the pieces and turn the pieces right side up.
Position the udder in the proper place between the 2 cow pieces and glue in place. Matching the edges of cow pieces, glue them together. Match up the tips of the horns, and glue the horn piece in place.
Make a bow with the ribbon, and glue it to the horns as shown in the photo. Glue eyes, nose and mouth in place.
Using a toothpick, place a small dot of white glue where you want to start the text. Position the "H", and continue with all the alphabet macaroni letters to spell out "Holy Cow, Are You Eating Again". If you are unable to find the alphabet macaroni, just print the words on paper or poster board and glue to the cow. Glue a couple strips of magnet to the back of the cow.
The instructions are also in a PDF file for which you may need Acrobat Reader to view. Download Acrobat Reader

Duke (Dachshund)
Duke is a 2 year old Dachshund. I got from a retired police officer 2 years ago. Duke likes to play with my cats and play fetch. He is a great dog, and loves you to rub his belly and scratch his ears.

Craft Project: April Showers Bring... Pretty Rainbows!
Children get to munch on a yummy snack while creating this beautiful rainbow. We used supplies we had on hand for this easy craft.
Supplies:
- Light blue paper
- Fruity Cheerios, Fruit Loops, or similar
- Glue
- Cotton balls
- Compass
Instructions:
Draw half circles on the paper with a compass wide enough to fit a Cheerio, Fruit Loop, etc. I made lines for 6 colors of cereal we had in our box.
Use glue to fill in the colors of the rainbow with the different colored cereal. Use the correct order of Roy G. Biv! Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet. I didn't use anything for indigo.
Glue cotton balls at each end of the rainbow. I used the large oversized cotton balls, but you could also just use several of the small regular ones.
Allow to dry and hang for everyone to enjoy!

Craft: Green Totes
Since we are celebrating "going green" I thought I'd share yet another tote idea. I made these totes (5 in all) for our church fair last fall. Someone generously donated the denim fabric. I added the little green leaf applique before sewing the totes together. I used Aleen's fusible web and followed the directions and then cut out the leaf shape and fused it on. It worked great.

Craft: Shell Mirror
I made this beautiful bathroom mirror with shells I collected from a beach in Florida and a mirror that I picked up in a dollar store. I used a glue gun to attach the shells. It was so easy and came out so pretty.
First, I bleached the shells and let them dry in the sun. I purchased an 8x10 inch mirror at a dollar store and proceeded to hot glue the shells onto the frame. It was already brown in color and 1 in. wide. It was perfect for a base. I tried to create a pattern with the shells. As you can see, I am delighted with the finished product and it cost me the expense of the glue sticks and the $1 frame!

May Day Baskets
By Debra Frick Back in the day when I was a young girl, my classmates and I celebrated May Day. It was celebrated as the coming of spring but, as I have learned through research, it was a pagan holiday celebrated in England before the coming of Christ. A better description would be a festival of flowers.
May Day is the forgotten holiday by many but the sentiments of the day make it a perfect holiday to remember the beautiful things we have been waiting for all winter. Who does not wait for the first flowers of spring?
Traditionally, May Day was celebrated on May 1. People would make small baskets of flowers and sweets and hang them on their neighbor's doors. You were supposed to try and catch the person who hung it there and if you did the penalty was a kiss from the person you caught. There were great celebrations with young girls who danced the May pole dance and there even was contests to crown the May queen. Back in the 1900's people even exchanged May Day postcards. Here are some easy ways to celebrate this wonderful day.
May Day Baskets
These can easily be made by kids of all ages.
Materials
- Paper plates
- Staplers
- Chenille stems
- Paper flowers* or silk flowers
- Paper hole punch
- Crayons and markers
- Candy kisses or suckers
Instructions
Fold the paper plate about three quarters of the way up. Staple up the sides to form a pocket. With the paper hole punch, cut two holes to the chenille stem to go through to form a handle. Now color and decorate your paper plate. Now fill it with paper flowers or silk flowers and candy kisses.
*These can be made with tissue paper or coffee filters I will give directions for both.
Tissue Paper Flowers
Materials:
- Tissue Paper
- Chenille stems
Instructions
Stack several pieces of colored tissue paper together. Cutting through all layers divide the paper into fourths. Each fourth makes one flower. Now you will accordion pleat the papers folding the paper back and forth until you have a nice neat little strip. Fold chenille stem in the center and twist tightly. Now fold the strip in up and gently pull the layers of tissue paper apart, fluffing your flower.
Coffee Filter Flowers
Materials:
- Coffee Filter flowers
- White coffee filters
- Markers
Instructions
Color randomly on about 7 coffee filters to make a nice fluffy flower. Lay the first filter down colored side down and stack the rest colored side up. Gather all the filters together and secure with a chenille stem.
Now the fun part, after you have made your May baskets you get to sneak up and hang them on doors. You could give one to grandma or try and hang one on a co-workers door. For a scout troop, these could be made for a nursing home. How about the elderly neighbor down the street. Hang one on your teacher's door and celebrate the coming of spring!

Second Hand Smokes Hurts Pets
I was recently emergency hospitalized when I couldn't breathe because of what began as a bad cold. Not surprisingly, after being a life long smoker, I was diagnosed with COPD/Acute Bronchitis. Needless to say an oxygen saturation count of 84 was enough for me to finally give up those ciggies for good, but it also has made me think about the effects my unhealthy habit has had on others in my life :-(
Thankfully, I have not smoked inside my home for over a decade and this new alert from the ASPCA makes me even more thankful for that, because my seven year old indoor Rachel The Cat had serious lung problems already when I rescued her as a kitten.
Please read this alert! And it's not only the second hand smoke you need to consider when it comes to the health of your loved ones and your beloved pets:

Insulate With Rugs as Wall Art
Hang a large rug (as art) on a wall that faces the outside of your home to help save energy and help keep out noise. A rug will also help keep a bedroom quiet if hung on an inside wall. This is especially helpful for those of us who live in mobile homes because the bedroom walls are so thin. I hung a new 100% wool rug on a north facing wall to help with energy saving in the winter, and on a south facing wall in my bedroom to help keep out summer heat. This has saved me quite a bit of energy. For extra floor insulation a large rug can be placed on top of your wall to wall carpet, and smaller washable rugs help insulate a bare kitchen floor. You will get added insulation if you put a rug pad behind the rugs.

Use Baby Powder to Remove Varnish from Hands
I was brushing varnish on my woodwork and my hands were all sticky from it. I needed to remove it but I didn't have any turpentine. I grabbed a container of baby powder and rubbed it into my hands. I could not believe it; no more sticky hands. I have been using the baby powder for ten years and it has never failed me.

Store Craft Supplies in Tackle Boxes
I use fishing tackle boxes from Walmart or Kmart to store craft supplies or sewing notions like threads, buttons, needles, beads, etc. I also use one box for kids art supplies like crayons, pencils, markers, erasers, etc. They have adjustable plastic dividers that can be fixed to the size of the item you need to store. I store my earrings and jewelery in one and makeup accessories in another. These boxes have handles to carry them around easily and also stack well for easy storage.

Save With a Vacuum Sealer
Five years, I brought a vacuum sealer on sale for $20. We save hundreds between resealing snack packages and breaking down family packs of meat into smaller portions. Since 2006, we've experienced an economic downturn that forces us to shop out the freezer. If we had to buy one now, we couldn't. I'm thankful we turned to frugal living while we had money.

Buy an Inexpensive Bed Pillow for Fiberfill
I recently needed some fiberfill for a pillow I was making. I was amazed at the price of the prepackaged stuffing. Instead of purchasing it, I bought an inexpensive bed pillow that was only $2.50. Not only was it cheaper, but there is enough for more than one pillow.

Poem for a Teddy Bear Made from Clothing
I used to have a copy of a poem to attach to a home made teddy bear. One made from deceased grandparents clothing for the grandchildren. I only remember the last line, "Remember, she loved you too." I want to make two bears for my nieces and cannot find the poem. I hope someone has a copy and will forward it to me.

What Breed is My Dog?
He dog is 4 yrs old. I was told when when we got him as a pup that he was a mix of Australian shepherd and white German shepherd father. I think there is some kind of collie and husky. I have never seen or heard a dog bark more than this dog ever. He is tail and his hair is rough, kinky, and coarse like straw. It falls off like cotton balls and is very hard to keep groomed. He's my son's dog not mine. We have a bet going to see what kind of dog he is. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

I live in the middle of nowhere. I have an outside cat that uses my flower beds as a litter box. I have tried mothballs, foil, human hair, sprays from stores and garden centers. None of these work.
She has now killed all of my plants. If I cannot find something that works, she is going to have to find a new owner, because the smell is horrible. Anything would be appreciated, because other than that she is a great cat!

Moisture Damage on a Hardwood Floor
Today I found a large black wet stain under a plant on my hardwood oak floor. I had placed a bowl under the plant, but the water must have gone over the top of the bowl and has sat there for a few days.
I have cleaned and dried the water mark with dry cloths and removed some of the stain with a weak solution of bleach. Some of the black mark came up, but some turned green. My question now is, should I let the stain dry and try sanding it down or try another bleach treatment?

Removing Sharpie Marker Off Skin
How do you remove permanent marker from skin? My 5 year old is not satisfied with the myriad of markers he owns, so he went into my kitchen and stole a Sharpie marker and colored all over himself.
We got the marker off his finger and toenails by using fingernail polish remover but it's still all over his skin.
Normally I would just wait for it to wear off but his eczema is reacting to it and now he has a nasty rash. Any idea how to remove the stuff off his skin safely?

Refrigerator Doesn't Stay Cold
We have a spare refrigerator in our basement that is used regularly since our kitchen refrigerator is small. I am having problems with the one in the basement. I have both refrigerator and freezer controls turned to the coldest settings. The freezer is fine but the refrigerator is under the recommended temperature for a refrigerator.
I am only using it for a short time for fresh veggies, fruit, and some beverages. My husband is quite handy at fixing, but can't diagnose the problem. Honestly, I think he just wants to get rid of the refrigerator. I want it keep it because I know we really do need it. He is not the one trying to figure out how to keep our foods cold every day so it doesn't really matter to him. I think if we did get rid of it then he would understand.
Could someone suggest a web site to use or have an answer to what may be wrong with the refrigerator? My sister thinks she has the solution. This has something to do with the electrical connection. She seems to think that there is too much electrical usage on the one line and the refrigerator needs more "juice" to run properly. We rent the house so we really don't have much control with this.
On the one electrical line we have our washer, an upright freezer, and some lights and other things along with this refrigerator. I don't quite know if this could be true. I forgot to mention that during the winter months, the refrigerator runs cold but I still have it set on the coldest setting. So basically when the outside temperature is cold, I can use the refrigerator safely. Our basement is more of a cellar and doesn't have any heat other than the heater when it runs.

What Breed is My Dog?
We rescued this Lady in December of 2008 from a dog pound. She is a beautiful 2 year old dog. Her prior owner said she was a Pharoah Hound Mix. She is very active, very smart, well mannered, and extremely affectionate to people. We have decided to take her to a dog trainer who expressed that she didn't think Lady was part Pharoah and thought she was more of an Alaskan Akita mix? Any thoughts? I'm not sure I'm seeing the Akita in her. I'd really love to know more about her history, she really is quite a different looking dog. Your thoughts and ideas would be greatly appreciated!
