I hope everyone had a nice weekend. If you have pets and are wondering about recalled pet food be sure to check out this page on the FDA's website:

Sadie (Staffordshire Terrier)

Sadie is a 4 year old Staffordshire Terrier. She was a stray puppy, looked liked she had been dumped. I couldn't help but take her in.

She likes to go on long walks and play all day with my grandchildren. Whoever left her missed out on a good friend.

Contests:

These contests are weekly. We pick 2 tip winners and 1 photo winner at the end of each week. Each winner will win $25!

Today's Tips:

Shop Today For Easter Items On Sale

Today all the Easter candy, toys and decorations go on sale. Many stores mark them down 50% or more to clear them out quickly. Store toys and other Easter items for next year and freeze chocolate for baking later in the year. You can also buy some Easter items for presents.

Easter foods like ham, lamb and other expensive cuts of meat are often marked down today as well. Stock up for summer barbecues or just freeze it for weeknight meals. Items that are fresh, like turkeys, cannot be frozen by the supermarket and must be sold quickly.

UPS Avoids Left Turns to Save Gas

Time magazine recently published an article called "The Global Warming Survival Guide". It has a list of 51 things you can do to reduce global warming. This one made me chuckle because I often find myself taking right turns to limit stress when driving.

"United Parcel Service took a detour to the right on its way to curb CO2 emissions. In 2004, UPS announced that its drivers would avoid making left turns. The time spent idling while waiting to turn against oncoming traffic burns fuel and costs millions each year. A software program maps a customized route for every driver to minimize lefts.

In metro New York, UPS has reduced CO2 emissions by 1,000 metric tons since January. Today 83% of UPS facilities are heading in the right direction; within two years, the policy will be adopted nationwide." (Source: Time.com)

They have many more tips on their site and many of them are frugal (you may already be doing them) like hanging clothes out to dry and using compact florescent lightbulbs. Take a look and see what you can do to save money and the environment.

Put a Penny on a Bee Sting

I saw this tip on the internet, if you get stung by a bee or hornet put a copper penny on the sting and hold it there for 15 minutes, it should take the sting away and should be no swelling.

By Annette from Ben Wheeler, TX

Editors Note: Snopes has a nice write up about it at the link below. While they give it a current status of "Undetermined", they seem to be pretty skeptical about it working.

WebMD has a nice article about treating bee stings here: What I have always done, is first make sure the stinger is removed, then put a paste of baking soda or meat tenderizer on it to draw out the poison. Putting a penny over a sting, especially if the stinger is still embedded, sounds like a very bad idea to me. Many people have serious allergic reactions to bee stings are require medical care, so bee stings can be very serious for some people, and even require prompt medical care.

CD Window Covering

Saw an interesting window treatment the other day. A computer shop had used CDs to cover a window; overlapping two layers, to create a sort of round pane effect. (I don't know what the other side looked like but you could spray them silver or another color)

Stock Up on Back to School Items for Crafts

To cut your craft costs, it's best to stock up at Target during the summer when they have their back to school sales. White glue bottles, crayons, markers, rulers, kid scissors are all the best price. They don't go bad in a year so stock up. Markers make great prizes for your child's birthday party too! Another time of year to get craft stuff is the day after Christmas if you have a Stats store. Everything is 50 percent off, no coupon required. Stock up on beads, fasteners, ribbon, hot glue melt, etc.

Homemade Baby Books

Since babies get bored with everything too soon, this is the best way to engross them (4-16 months). I cut attractive colorful pics of almost anything from magazines or newspapers and then just put them in sandwich bags. Punch them and spiral bind them. You are ready with a new colorful baby book which you can change every now and then. Plus, you can wipe them easily for any of baby spills.

Coffee Filter for Loose Tea

If you run out of bags for using loose tea, use a coffee filter. Place the amount of tea you need for a pot or a cup, into the center of the filter. Gather the filter up over the tea and tie it closed with a piece of string. Leave the ends of the string long enough to be able to pull the bag out of the pot or cup when the tea is finished steeping.

Allergic Reaction from Hot Chocolate

My son had a mug of hot chocolate in a place that specializes in all things chocolate. It advertises this beverage as the "best in this state, the nation" or some such thing.

Midway through, he had to stop drinking it because it "coated the tongue and made it feel prickly and stinging". He said that this was not due to the heat, but to ingredients.

Any ideas what it could have been? I am wondering if we need to be on the lookout for an allergic reaction.

Room With Fireplace Smells Damp

We recently bought a 100+ year old home with a partially dug out basement. The front bedroom has an original fireplace with a stone hearth that goes down to under the house. That's the background... here's my unusual problem. Once the weather gets warm, the bedroom with the fireplace sometimes has an unusual odor. Dank, damp kind of smell. It comes and goes. Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this? And if so, what can I use to get rid of the odor? A humidifier by the fireplace hasn't helped. I'm at a loss here.

Buying Fertile Duck Eggs

My family and I are looking to start a nice little farm with some ducks. I was wondering if anyone knew where I can get FERTILE mallard or pekin DUCK eggs. I have called over 50 different places around CT and either no one has them or they are charging an arm and a leg. I'm only looking for 2 or 3 fertile eggs tops. We're trying to start off small but most places are only willing to sell us 20 at a time. If anyone could help me out it would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

15 Year Wants to Sleep at Her Boyfriend's House

Should you allow a 15 year old to sleep over her boyfriend's house? Her boyfriend is moving around an hour away and his friendly, trustworthy parents are willing to drive if daughter is allowed to sleepover. My Laundry Always Stinks!

I am in Korea and moved into a new apartment a few weeks ago. I have cleaned my laundry machine with vinegar and baking soda on two seperate occasions. I have used nearly a whole pack of baking soda and a whole bottle of vinegar and to no-avail! The laundry still comes out smelly!

My machine is a toploader, using cold water feed only. I am not overloading it, as I have even tried 1 or 2 things in at the time too. Also I seperate all my items. The worst offenders for stinkyness are synthetic items! Usually my soccer t-shirts. I don't play soccer, so I am not getting all sweaty!

I use Tide Coldwater wash liquid.

Any advice?

The Basics of Square Foot Gardening
By Ellen Brown

Square foot gardening is a concept so easy, yet so overlooked in lieu of more traditional row or mound gardens. It is less time consuming, less physically demanding, and uses less space and water. About the only tools required are a pencil or small piece of dowel (for making seed holes), and a lightweight, inexpensive trowel. It's also the one gardening technique that allows those physically challenged and wheelchair bound the opportunity to garden independently - without help from others.
