Making a Coat for My Dog

This is a coat I made for my little dog. She gets cold in the winter time and store bought dog clothes are so expensive so I decided to make my own.

I looked carefully at the shapes of clothes sold at the store and decided on a shape that I liked. I measured my dog and sewed scraps of corduroy from some old pants together to make the top. I cut an old sweatshirt for the lining and I used some fabric I folded and ironed to make a piping I sewed around the edges. I used velcro at the neck and waist to fasten. I sewed some elastic on the inside to pull over her back legs to keep the back of the coat in place. Now my dog will be toasty warm this winter!

What Mother Nature Can Do

This was during a storm April '05 in Medford Lakes, New Jersey. The water level was very high and the current was as you can see very strong. It took this canoe and wrapped it around a tree approximately 10 feet in the air. No one can remove it because it is so high. It sits there today and reminds everybody daily what mother nature can truly do.

Baking Soda in Hampers

Our daughter has learned at college to keep some baking soda in with her dirty clothes to help cut down on odors. The same thing works by sprinkling some into your laundry areas or hampers.

Ask Permission Before Cutting

When going to cut down your own Christmas tree, be sure the land you're taking the tree from, that you have the land owners permission to do so. It's better to ask first, than to do so, assuming it will be alright. Assuming, could lead to bad feelings between neighbors, or etc. Let's keep the Christmas season joyful.

Removing Odor in the Car

If your car has an undesirable odor to it, just take some baking soda and sprinkle it on the floors and the fabric upholstery. Leave it there for about 15 minutes and then vacuum it up. Absorbs odors there just like it does in other places, like the fridge.

Avoid Bouncing Checks

Bouncing checks almost always ends up being a lot more costly than sending in a late payment. Not only do you end up getting the late charge, you also get a 25 to 30 dollar fee from your bank. Long gone are the days that it takes banks a week to process checks, so the money must be present in your account when you mail a payment. The best way to avoid bouncing checks is track your spending closely, always keep a buffer in your account and sign up for overdraft protection with your bank.

Storing Water for Emergencies

Use proper storage containers for water storage. Water should be stored in containers that are made specifically for water storage, or in glass and plastic bottles that were previously used for juice, pop or water. Clean the containers thoroughly before using and make sure that the container has a tight fitting cap. Never use containers that were previously used for pesticides, chemicals, solvents, anti-freeze, oils, etc.

Butcher's Specials

Check out your butcher's specials--sometimes you can get a better deal than their advertised special. I always ask the butcher if I can get a better deal if I buy a larger quantity of the already advertised special. More than half the time, if I buy in 5 pound, 10 pound or higher bundle, the price per pound comes down.

Prepayment Is Key

When borrowing a large amount of money for a house or a car, make sure you get a loan with no prepayment penalty. Then you should always pay more than the minimum payment. An additional 50 dollars a month can shave years off a mortgage or car loan. By ThriftyFun

Dawn's Christmas Tradition

Every year the day after Christmas my family and I go to camp in Fort Wilderness at Disney for a week. We have done this since I was very young. My cousins used to come from Michigan and the two families would make lots of wonderful memories that we STILL talk about today. Now that we are all older and have our own families, we all take our children so that they can have the same great experiences. There is so much to do there, we usually don't go into the park since it is so crowded.

Fort Wilderness has an outdoor movie every night complete with a sing'a'long with Chip and Dale. There is so much to do, you never get bored. I look forward to this time to bond with my children and reminisce with my parents and brother and sisters. We usually take bikes and lots of stuff for the kids to experience. I wouldn't trade this time with my family for anything, it is our tradition that I hope my children will carry on.

Removing Cat Pee and Odor from Carpet

I need tips on to get rid of cat pee! Especially the smell, but I want to get rid of the smell so that my cat does not smell it and pee again! I heard vinegar works, but has anybody actually tried it? I'm afraid that we might have to get rid of him if he doesn't stop, because we're installing new hard wood flooring, but I also heard they stop with that too. HELP!

Cleaning Hair Off Velcro Hair Rollers

I use those velcro hair rollers but after some usage, loose hair becomes stuck to the rollers and then they don't work very well. Does anybody have an easy way of taking the hair off the rollers? Picking it off by hand is very time consuming!

Growing With Artificial Lights
By Ellen Brown

The best light for plants may be natural light, but using artificial lights to sprout seeds and grow plants does have its advantages. It's never cloudy and windy indoors, artificial lights eliminate the need for south facing window sills (or any windows at all), and we can make "sunny days" last as long as we want them to no matter the time of year. In short, our gardens can keep blooming all year long!
