Fake It French Onion Soup

hands-on time: 10 minutes
total time: 20 minutes
makes 4 servings

3 14-ounce cans ready-to-eat beef broth
3/4 cup canned French-fried onions
1/4 cup dry sherry
4 slices stale French bread
4 1-ounce slices Swiss cheese

Heat oven to 400*. Arrange four 10-ounce oven-safe bowls on a baking sheet. Divide the broth and onions among them. Add 1 tablespoon of sherry to each. Float a slice of bread in each bowl and top with a slice of cheese. Bake 12 to 15 minutes or until the cheese is melted and the soup is bubbling.

Anyone have a simple recipe for french onion soup? I need a recipe that is "restaurant good" but "canned soup" quick! Thanks to ALL, monnat96 from Pingree Grove, IL

RE: Quick French Onion Soup Recipe

Actually, WalMart have a canned onion soup that's pretty darn good! I put croutons and shredded cheese on top, and it's really good! (09/17/2007)

Yes, the walmart brand is good. You can cook down a little dry sherry, add canned onion soup and follow carolb's suggestions. For extra onions, just slice fresh onions thinly and saute till softened, add to soup. (09/18/2007)

RE: Quick French Onion Soup Recipe

I save the drippings from a beef pot roast and add a package of Knorr's Onion soup mix ,some pieces of beef and lots of sliced onions. Simmer until tender and put in individual bowls. Add Mozzarella cheese and put in oven to melt. I sometimes put under broiler to brown, too. But be careful it only takes a few minutes. (09/19/2007)
