This is my mom's "Never fail pie crust" recipe:
3 cups flour
1 cup shortening
1 tsp salt
1/2 cup water
1 tsp vinegar
1 egg
Beat egg and vinegar with water; work shortening into flour and salt.
Add the liquid to the flour and make into five balls. Makes five crusts.

For flaky pie crust, either homemade or ready made, I use vinegar brushed on before adding filling and on top crust. It makes it extra flaky.

Thanks. In all the hints I have accumulated over the years, I have never come across this one. Will use it in the next pie. Does it matter which vinegar: cider or white? (02/19/2007)

No, it doesn't matter. I have used both. (02/19/2007)
