My Own Cookbook

If your kid loves to cook, he or she will have fun making this book. You can make one general cookbook or several smaller ones for specific recipes, such as beverages, desserts, snacks, etc. The use of book clips is great because it allows you to add new pages at any time. Book clips can be found in any department or craft store (I found mine at Target). They are round, silver-toned, hinged clips with a clasp opposite the hinge. You open the clasp to add pages and close the clasp to hold the pages together. Have fun!

Mini Rose Bush

I received this mini rose bush from my kids 11-12 year ago. It was in a pot for a while and then I planted it in the yard. It has grown and blooms beautifully in front of my day lilies every year. I've received others and always find a special place for them in the yard. I feed them with coffee grounds and cut up banana peels.

10-dinner.jpgThese meals are intended to be a relatively simple and healthy weeknight meal for a family of four. We assume that these dinners are being made in a kitchen stocked with regular kitchen staples. We will not include prices of oil, sugar, flour, spices, etc. unless you need a 1/4 cup or more. Regional food prices may vary and can be reduced by smart shopping techniques.

Contests:

These contests are weekly. We pick 2 tip winners and 1 photo winner at the end of each week. Each winner will win $25!

Today's Tips:

Terrycloth Kitten Comfort Pillow

If your kitten needs comfort when he/she is alone or anytime actually, try this: A terry cloth tea towel 1/2 to 2/3 full of regular uncooked rice. Sew the terry cloth into a closed bag, and warm in the micro wave for 3/4 minute. Your kitty will have a warm cuddly substitute for a warm mom cat. They enjoy kneading on the terry cloth and sleeping next to the warm bag.

Frugal Ideas For Women's Salons

I have a very simple hairstyle and try to avoid going to salons, which around here can cost from $40-$75 and up for a simple cut. When I can, I go to the Vidal Sassoon Academy, a beauty school, but I have also found a back to basics hairdresser in a country town which I visit regularly. Now I am going to have her cut my hair because it's 1/2 as much!

Caring For Lizards As Pets

When keeping lizards, they need a lot of heat, light and a lot of space. You should feed them every night: crickets, meal worms, woodies; blue tongues love snails. Lizards also would love to have a log or any type of stick. If they are a water type lizard, then they would need some water in their tank.

How To Get Rid Of Dark Circles And Puffy Eyes

  • You can slice cucumber and put on your eyes for half an hour everyday for 15 days to lighten dark circles.
  • You can massage under eye area with sweet almond oil before going to bed to lighten dark circles.
  • You can wrap a grated raw potato in cheesecloth and apply to the affected area for 15-20 minutes. Wipe off the residue and apply an eye cream.
  • To get rid of undereye puffiness you can rub some ice cube for 4-5 minutes.
  • Directly apply lemon and/or lemon juice on the black bags under your eyes several times throughout the course of the day.
  • Tea Bags - Dark Circle and puffy eye home remedy: Boil some water as if you were making a normal tea beverage, and insert a tea bag as usual. Gently squeeze out the brewed teabag after about 5 to 8 minutes for best results, and allow it to cool. Apply over the eyes and relax with the cool and slightly damp bags in place over the most attention needing zone. Allow to sit for 10 to 15 minutes, while relaxing. Take the teabags off and see an improvement in your dark circles or puffy eyes.

Memory Basket

Whether or not you are into scrapbooking, you should appreciate this tip. I use a fairly large (12 inch diameter), pretty basket, which sits in my kitchen. When I receive a letter from a friend, thank you, Birthday, Anniversary, invitation, etc., I drop it in the basket. Likewise, if I go somewhere special, I drop restaurant menus, ticket stubs, other mementos into the basket. Just before Christmas, I empty out the basket, seeing what I want to keep, reliving memories of the year. Some I place in scrapbooks, some I trash, but it is a wonderful way to "walk" through the year and great reminders when you are writing Christmas cards. You will be amazed at all the things you do throughout a year that you forget about. I love my Memory Basket.

Turn Gas Down Before Flipping Food

When BBQ-ing on a gas grill with a flame control dial, turn it to low before attempting to flip the food over. Minimizes flareups and thereby lessens the chance of someone being burnt. You can turn it back up 'til the next time you need to tend to the food.

Save Electricity: Hang Dry Your Clothes

To save on your electricity try hanging your clothes outside. Most permanent slacks come out really well if you hang them outside. Be sure to fold them the way you want them to dry and hang them from the bottom of the pant leg. I hang my clothes outside especially in the summer and it takes no time for them to dry.

Finding Donations for the Troops

I am part of the AAMA Chattanooga chapter and we are currently working on a project to send care packages to a full company of troops in Iraq (about 150-200 troops.) I have been feverishly emailing and trying to find companies that will donate and help us help our troops. We would appreciate any help that anyone has to offer on who we can contact to get donations for food, calling cards, personal hygiene products and such. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks for supporting our troops and God Bless.

Chipmunks Attacking My Plants

Does anyone have suggestions for keeping chipmunks out of my flowers? They're eating the flowers from my impatients, and biting the stems of several other flowering plants. I've tried Liquid Fence, but it's very expensive and has to be reapplied often. I've also tried Shake Away (also pricey) but it's difficult to apply to pots and flowerbeds. Maybe someone has a homemade remedy? Thanks.
