Craft Project: Recycled Confetti Picture Frame

This old picture frame was going to be trash until I thought of painting it and adding some extra "Happy New Years" confetti to it. I slapped on some glossy varnish and now it looks fantastic.

Craft Project: Christmas Cards Slipper

This is a good way to recycle those beautiful Christmas cards. And, if you just can't bear to cut them up; scan a copy of the card you like and then follow the instructions just as if it were the card. These are pretty hanging on the tree or from the fireplace mantel.

Babs The Cat

Babs is 13 years old. We got Babs, and her brother Beavis, from my sister-in-law who rescued feral kittens.

She likes to sleep, eat, play (for about 30 seconds per day), and cuddle up with Mom or Dad. Babs is our precious, spoiled, fat little angel. We adore her and wish all pets could enjoy the life she has.

Malice The Cat

Malice is 18 months old. My friend needed a good home for him and I took him.

Hide under the bed and jump out and scare our unsuspecting chihuahua, chase flies, look out the windows. We only call him Malice because when he was a kitten we mistook his rough playfulness for being mean because he always bit and scratched us for no reason.

In Memory Of Shasta

Shasta was 4 years old in this picture. A friend asked me if I wanted this cute little kitten, I said we had too many already, my friend that was with me, picked her up, and put her in the car. What a great friend! She was the NEATEST cat!

She used to LOVE to ride on my mothers left shoulder while mom did household chores. She would just hang over her shoulder like a limp dishrag. In this picture, Shasta thought that she was the most special ornament in the tree! She was such a special member of the family. She is no longer with us and is terribly missed.

Craft Project: Thread Storage Tree
By Debra Frick

Here is a nifty gift for the sewer that has everything. This thread tree hangs flat on a wall and came be hung up above a worktable or a sewing machine. It took my husband about 20 minutes to build and it will become a great gift for my friend Susan who does a lot of sewing in her Drapery Business. For Drapes she uses big spools of thread but for the hand sewing of hems and repairs she always has lots of little spools that she never quite knew how to keep handy. I know this will do the trick. Also if you want to make several check your local cut off bin at Lowe's or Home Depot. I figure this one cost me about a $1.25 to make.

Sabastain (Deer Head Chihuahua)

Sabastain (Bashy) is 6 years old and a Deer Head Chihuahua. I got him through an ad in the newspaper when he was 6 weeks old, for my daughter who had severe asthma.

He loves to have his picture taken, and he likes to chase and play with frogs. His favorite is chasing lizards. He has the best personality, you would almost think he understands what ever you say (which he does). He loves to sleep stretched out on the rug in front of the TV or rest on the grass after a lizard chase..

He has many costumes, like Christmas, Halloween, 4th of July etc. He loves to go bye bye in the car and he likes to go camping and chase the squirrels.

Contests:

These contests are weekly. We pick 2 tip winners and 1 photo winner at the end of each week. Each winner will win $25!

Today's Tips:

Check Craigslist For Frugal Computer Parts

For inexpensive computer parts post a free ad in Craigslist or search your local ads. I see people posting want ads for used computers all the time. I imagine they are using them for parts, perhaps you can give them a call or email and see if they would be willing to provide or sell you a piece they aren't using. They might even be able to connect the parts to your computer. Hobbiests are always a good inexpensive contact. They enjoy what they do and seem to work for a fraction of the cost of retailers. I have met some wonderful people that have helped me with my computer, car, yard work and painting. I was quoted for a kitchen paint job by a professional for over five hundred dollars and a guy in my neighborhood came over and did a fabulous job for only $200.00 and even moved my items, cleaned my floors, installed a new oven fan and wiped my cabinets with wood cleaner! It was well worth it! I had a computer person that I found in a want ad come and pick up several used computer items from me and then he stood to help me with my install =)

Frugal Boy's Army Birthday Party

My son had an army birthday party when he turned 8 and it was a BLAST. We ordered plastic helmets and dog tags from Oriental Trading. For the birthday boy, we got a helmet (really a liner, but it was heavy enough!) from a local army surplus store. We put black marks on all the kids' cheeks and gave them a fake tattoo when they arrived. The person working the door took down their names and we had a grid of items they were to get and activities to do and we'd check mark it off as if they were a recruit when it was done.

We had bought white shirts ($1 each, if you have a friend who has a business and can qualify as a dealer, shirts can be quite cheap!) We dyed them army green and had their last names put on the left front pocket area by transfer (a local printing company does one page of transfers for $1.50 and then $1.00 each shirt to press them). It was important to get everyone's RSVP's so we wouldn't waste any shirts. They changed into the shirts and got their personalized dog tags. If you know someone with a label maker, you can just put their names on a clear label and stick them to the dog tags, which is what we did after finding out the dog tags were too thick for us to just imprint their names.

What made it kind of fun was that my father had some fatigues on and a shirt with his name on it and the helpers such as myself, my mother and my son's father had on the shirts as well with our names. We had our clipboards which just make it seem so official. Also the kids were referred to as "Private Smith" (or whatever their last name was) and they shouted "Yes Sir!" or "No Sir!" when asked questions. We had roll call, "processed" the recruits and then they learned how to stand at attention and then at ease, how to salute and how to march. We taught them a marching song and marched around singing it, but that might have been a little too much.

The best part of the party was the obstacle course. We already have a small jungle gym with a swinging rope. We happened to have a red plastic sled that would hold some water and the kids would have to swing over the water from the rope, drop down and then climb over a wooden wall that we built (the most costly of items because of the cost of wood). We had to dig 2 deep holes in the ground to make it secure . We put a six foot 4x4 in each hole about 1.5 feet down and nailed, sometimes flush and sometimes with gaps between, about six 4-foot 1x6 boards across with gaps for ease of climbing.) After summitting the wall, the kids either climbed back down the other side or jumped down. Have a spotter there for safety.

They then had to crawl under bright criss-crossed flagging/surveyor's tape (the kind you see tied to show boundaries, skinnier but similar to police "do not cross tape." They were supposed to crawl without touching the fairly low-to-the-ground tape maze. We just put some square .5x.5 sticks in the ground, 4 on the left, 4 in the middle and 4 on the right and then criss-crossed the tape, tying it off once satisfied with it. Once the kid made it through, they hopped up and kicked a soccer ball into a soccer net, both of which we happened to already possess although they are so common, you could probably borrow them. What made it really fun, was that the "sergeant" timed each kid's run with a stopwatch, blowing a whistle to start and at the finish and an "assistant" would write the times down all official like. They did the obstacle course again and again to beat their times or others' times and just absolutely LOVED it.

A lot of the kids went home with just a few boys who stayed to spend the night. The boys who spent the night got to play with camo colored pvc miniature-marshmallow shooters. Caution, you will find marshmallows for years to come if they play indoors. It was birthday boy and 4 others, so the shooters weren't much $. Anyway, all the kids had a great time and were pretty worn out at the end of it all. Lots of cool picture opportunities and a fairly elaborate party without major cost.

We thought about buying army tents for decoration but also for the boys to sleep in, but this was just too much and very pricey. We also thought about hanging up some camouflage netting for decoration, but the army surplus store runs out of that quick and it too is pricey. We just put up army green color streamers and a few balloons which was plenty. The cake was just a rectangle pan cake but with some plastic army men on it and a tank. We did buy a batch of plastic army men from Oriental Trading with the plan for the spend-the-nighters to hunt for them. This was too much on top of the rest of the activities, I so over plan sometimes! And don't worry about weather too much, it was totally drizzly the day of my son's party and it kind of gave it a bit of authenticity. Some of the kids got muddy, but it was exhilarating. Hope this gives you some ideas!

Keep Refilling Pump Lotions To Get Every Bit

Do you ever wonder how much of a product, such as lotion, gets thrown away when you can no longer squeeze or pump any more out? I did. When I ran out of a bottle of lotion, I cut the thing open, and was surprised at how much clings to the sides and pools in the bottom, especially with pump mechanisms.

So when things that come in a plastic bottle, like lotion (thicker things like creams and lotions are the worst) can't be gotten out with the pump, you can do this to help reduce waste and get the most out of the product.

Make sure you keep one container at least partially full, to put the remnants in. Then cut open your almost-out lotions and use an old spoon or the like to scoop out all of the remaining lotion. A 50 cent plastic funnel helps make the job a lot easier. Then simply pour it all into the single container. I recommend doing this with same or similar kinds of lotion, so you know it will mix well, but if you don't mind mixing scents and colors and the like, then just mix it all together. I just use one kind, so it's easy for me.

And the plastic might by recyclable. If it is, I can't imagine it's any less recyclable in two pieces than in one.

New Use For Plastic Dividers

My step son, for Fathers Day in children's church, painted on one of those plastic divider cases. What a great idea too. Now hubby keeps all of his loose nuts, bolts and screws in there and it is "personalized" by his little buddy. It is so cute too. The kids have fun making them and it is useful for the adult. Very inexpensive too. This could be a Christmas idea for all of you out there with kids.

Getting The Most Of Your Post-Christmas Shopping

The Christmas frenzy and day after frenzy is over and retailers are still trying to move merchandise from their shelves. Now is the time to shop if you can think ahead some. I gather up my discount bucks I got from buying before Christmas. While I was out before Christmas, I gave out my email address and got more online coupons. Any special day passes I may have gotten, I get that too. Just to make it a little bit better, I can shop on senior citizen day and take my mother or sister.

A recent trip to a popular department store had me buying Christmas and Thanksgiving items at 95% off. Seasonal items will be the heaviest discounted. Avoid food items because they will not save well. Wrap scented candles in cellophane and store in a cool place to extend their scent.

Mitten Christmas Ornament

As you know, young children tend to lose things. My son recently lost a mitten and I just didn't want to throw away the remaining one. So I decided to turn it into a Christmas tree ornament. I sewed on a ribbon to hang it with. I wrote with glitter glue, his name, the month, and year. Now it goes on the tree, and will be put up every year. Years from now, he'll ask about it and I'll have a memory to share and a date to go with it.

Natural Homemade Christmas Decorations

These are just some ideas for some natural homemade Christmas decorations.

My family gathers a bunch of pine cones, which we paint and glitter up. We take some fishing string and tie them up on our Christmas tree, outdoor trees and bushes.

We also make our own homemade Christmas wreaths by taking vines from the woods and winding it around, until it takes on that wreath like shape. We later hot glue on some leaves, pine cones, acorns, and evergreen pieces.

The vines also make a nice natural looking garland when you glue evergreen pieces, pine cones, and leaves on it.

You can make Christmas swags by taking two branches from your Christmas tree (fake or real) and laying them on top of each other. Tie a piece of ribbon on the top to hold them together and hot glue pine cones on it.

Christmas Holiday Activities

If you are needing any holiday activities, here are a couple I do. We did this last year and it was so funny. We had my BIL draw the back end of a deer without the tail (we call Rudolph) on any large sheet of paper; (ie: back side of gift wrap, freezer paper, etc). With a blindfold on and a large glove, you spin the person, and then direct him to the paper, and you hand him a bow with sticky on it, and he has to place the bow where Rudolph's tail would be, using only the gloved hand (pin the tail on the donkey). We give a prize to the closet and a booby prize for the furthest. You would be surprised where they end up.

Next game.. I have been collecting Christmas gift wrap pieces of paper for 20 years. I have a large container and these papers (they are about 1 inch by 3 inches, rolled). Each year I get papers from whomever and wherever I can, and add to it. Each year, they have to guess how many are in there. The winner gets a prize! I also have Hanukkah papers in there and 2 sided papers in there, and they have to guess how many of those are in there for another prize. There are NO 2 papers alike. People actually save pieces for me. But like i said, I have been collecting and doing for 20 years or better. But you can start this year and before you know it, you'll have your own container of games! The family looks forward to this little challenge, and they always think they can remember from year to year, but they can't, and they don't know when I have added to it.

Well I have to go count all those papers now as Christmas is just 2 days away. Have fun!! and MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL!

Buy Sale Red And Green Items For Valentines And St. Patrick's Day

Hit the after-Christmas sales for RED stuff; red napkins, paper plates, cups, table linens, bathroom towels; solid red anything that you'll get for 50-90% off after Christmas can be used in February for Valentine's Day. Same goes for GREEN stuff and St. Patrick's Day. Also, look for winter items included in the after-Christmas sales that you'll be able to use for the next three months.

Freeze Lemon Peels to Freshen Garbage Disposal

I appreciate the tip on saving lemon peels in the freezer for future recipes, that call for lemon rind or zest. I would like to add that by saving lemon peels in the freezer, you can use a few of them in the garbage disposal periodically. This will freshen the smell, and cleanse the disposal. Hope this helps some people.

Use a Spray Bottle for Cooking Oils

Don't spend a lot on commercial cooking sprays that can be bad for the environment. Get a small trigger-spray bottle - I got mine for $1 at my local Wal-Mart. Buy regular oil, whatever you prefer. Craft: Christmas Angels Mobile

Reuse an old Angel Tree Top or cut out a large Angel from a magazine or hand draw one. Cut out and glue to white card board. Make stars out of white poster board. Decorate stars with silver sparkle glue or use your imagination. Punch hole on top of star and at bottom of skirt. You can also use a stapler to attach string.

Write names of loved ones that have passed on across the star. Use yarn, heavy kite string, or thin ribbon to attach to the angel skirt. Hang in a window or on tree. I have substituted, Christmas trees, and hand made round ornaments, as well as bells. I have also made large stars and hung small stars with real bells attached to the stars. Hand made candles,
with the names written at the base work as well. I started making these memory mobiles in 1969.

Source: I started my first mobile, 12/1969 to remember my great-grandmother. I missed her, so this way she was with me. Even at Christmas, her favorite Holiday.

Electric Smoke Detector Won't Stop Beeping

My house in Montana has the smoke alarms going off only up stairs and and the heat is off. The temp has been in the negatives for a week or so. I had a friend turn the heat on low to see if that worked but it's been two days and it's still going off. Should I have him turn the heat up more? I live in NC so it's hard for me to know really what's going on. Please help!
