Garden: Red Russian Kale

I love kale and color so what better plant than Red Russian Kale!

When planning a garden don't restrict yourself to plants available locally. Consider the options of starting plants from seed. The varieties that are available in catalogs and online seem endless and so much more fun. I like to grow organically so starting from seed works for me most of the time. This Red Russian Kale is a great example, it is an heirloom, meaning I can save seeds to plant next year, it has a wonderful shape and the color is well not red but has beautiful lavender stems and greenish gray leaves. I love a beautiful and tasty garden.

The white spots are a reflection of the flash off the dew drops when I took the picture this morning.

Craft Project: Baby Cradle Purse
By Harlean Greathouse

This is also sometimes called a Church Purse. It is crocheted using a dishwashing detergent bottle for a base. Any oval bottle will work. When it is closed it is a purse, and opened it is a baby cradle.

Contests:

These contests are weekly. We pick 2 tip winners and 1 photo winner at the end of each week. Each winner will win $25!

Today's Tips:

Contacting Companies for Complaint Resolution

Telephone your local library and ask for the "Business Section". Once someone answers, tell them you want the name, title and address of the CEO, President, (whatever) and also the same for your local District Manager of the Company in question. Send your complaint to the CEO and President, copy to the Sr. V.P., the District Manager and your local store manager of whom you are not finding resolution to your problem.

I PROMISE you, in less than 2 weeks, you will be receiving telephone calls to resolve your issues. Be sure to include the name of the person (in the letter of complaint ) with whom you are dealing with locally. That name in the complaint will have your local person sweating to keep his/her job this week, next week or next year..This is not something they want to 'big wigs' to know about :). This works EVERY time! In this case, the old adage: "The Customer is always right" has real meaning.

Reusing Gift Bags

Do you throw away party bags that you receive gifts in? Save them and reuse them. Did you get one and now it's ripped or has writing on it? Cut the bag apart and save the section of paper that is still good and use it as wrapping paper! It is heavy duty, folds up easily in your wrapping paper storage box and will save a tree and another trip to the store!

Ask Friends for What You Need

Not long ago, we were invited to a cookout amongst friends. During the party, one couple announced their oldest son was going to be moving out and sharing an apartment with some friends. They asked if anyone had any furnishings they no longer wanted. They'd be glad to come after them for the boys. A few weeks later, we learned the boys got several pieces of furniture, as well as some appliances and knick-knacks from different as a result of this request. It gave the folks getting rid of the items a sense of helping some young adults getting started in this big world. It saved the young men a tremendous amount of time of not having to search the classifieds or going all over searching for these items, not to mention the money they all saved!

Use a 2 Quart Pitcher for Sugar

I came in from the store having bought sugar on sale, and was looking for another cannister to put it in when I spied the new 2 quart lidded pitcher I had picked up at the dollar store the day before. Sure enough - the pitcher makes a great and handy container for sugar. A 4 lb bag fills it to the top and the slotted spout allows me to pour the sugar just easily enough for measuring - A 2 quart or less size is about as heavy as I would go depending on the strength of the lid and the handle - it's easy to grip, and no spills. I was tickled pink!

Use Shredded Paper Under Tomato Plants

While reading uses for newspaper, I thought I would share an idea given to me by a friend a couple of years ago. Putting shredded paper around your tomato plants helps keep tomatoes off the ground so they don't rot. Works really well and shredded paper just gets tilled into ground every year and decomposes in time.

Make Lemon Syrup For Custom Lemonade

We use extra sugar this time of year for lemonade as the weather warms up, but hubby likes his drinks a LOT sweeter and stronger than I prefer mine, so I make a syrup of lemon juice and sugar and keep it in a pitcher in the fridge. We each can pour a glass of water and add the lemon syrup to taste. It works very well for us.

Use Old Books to Make a Handbag

I saw instructions on how to make a handbag out of an old book cover on the net - which intrigues me. You just cut off the cover and then it's lined, fabric sides added and put on a handle! I would line it with contact paper - to make it more resistant to stains, etc. And use a chain to make it a shoulder purse! You could also make other interesting boxes, etc. from the covers. Some of the old ones are so nice, I have bought them just for the covers! A funky evening purse? Thought I would share the idea.

Hotdog Buns For Breadsticks

Last night for dinner I had Stouffer's Lasagna - baked in the oven. I always like to have either garlic toast or breadsticks when I serve Lasagna, but realized that I'd failed to buy some. Then it dawned on me!

I took hot dog buns left from a couple of nights previously, mixed garlic powder with butter and buttered the hot dog buns. I had no recipe for mixing the garlic powder and butter, so I added garlic powder until I could smell it in the butter. After buttering the hot dog buns, I sprinkled a bit more garlic powder on them before putting them into the oven. After taking the Lasagna out, I baked the hot dog buns for about 8 minutes at the same temperature as the Lasagna.

They were as good as breadsticks bought at the store.

Dear Webby's Joke of the Day

The fourth-grade teacher had to leave the room for a few minutes. When she returned, she found the children in perfect order. Everybody was sitting absolutely quiet.

She was shocked and stunned and said, "I've never seen anything like this before. This is wonderful. But, please tell me, what came over all of you? Why are you so well behaved and quiet?"

Finally, after much urging, little Sally spoke up and said, "Well, one time you said that if you ever came back and found us quiet, you would drop dead."

Ideas for a Thanksgiving Tea

My church is having a Thanksgiving tea in November. This will be our 2nd thanksgiving tea. We had different color table last year and we had a lady to speak on "Oh Give Thanks". I would like some more ideas of what different things we can do. We did have a dinner. The donation was $10.00. What kind of decorations should I have? What kind of food should I serve? If you have any ideas what I should do I'm asking for help. Thank You. Please let me no soon.

May God Bless You.

Tomato Plants with Yellow Leaves

My problem is that our tomato leaves are turning yellowish brown around the edges. Also on some of them the tops have died out. They are not looking like they are going to survive. What is causing this and what can I do about it? We have them in a bed in our back yard close to the garage. We have had tomatoes in this spot for several years now but have never had this problem. The plants we bought from a local store. But am not sure where they are actually from. But we also have some plants that we got from friends and they started theirs from seed. They are doing the same thing. Can anyone help here. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Hardiness Zone: 6a Evelyn from St. Maries, Idaho

Recipe For Cheese Filled Corn Dogs

I have been looking forever it seems to find a recipe for Cheese corn dogs. Not sure if this is what you call them. Instead of having a wiener in them, it is cheese and the corn meal outside, on a stick that they deep fry like a corn dog. I've gotten them many times while shopping at the Mall at walk-up eateries and you can get mustard to dip them in if you want. How do you make these and where can you buy them? I can't find them in grocery stores. Please help. I love them. Thanks.

Getting Rid of Garter Snakes

We have removed 9 gardener snakes and drove them about 5 miles away and dropped them in a swampy area. One snake had his tail missing, and 2 weeks later, we just caught another gardener snake with his tail missing. Same sized snake as the previous snake removed. With this distance in play, can they find their way back home to our garden area and yard? Thank you for the help.
