Recovering Outdoor Cushions

My outdoor chair cushions were sunfaded and stained but other than that were very usable. I made removable, washable slip covers for them from matching curtain fabric and a sofa throw that had been tucked in a cupboard for years and almost forgotten.

The cushions could almost pass for new again. Luckily for me the fabric had a check pattern so it was easy for me to keep the seams reasonably straight. Cost: FREE :)

Allee (Rat Terrier/Chihuahua)

Allee is a Rat Terrier/Chihuahua, the vet says she is 3 months old. My daughter found her in an alley, then later we found the owners. She had ran away but they were giving away her and her brother.

She loves to snuggle and has taken over my favorite blanket. Allee loves to chase things and almost brings it back. She is new so she has a lot to teach me.

Allee has came into my life when I really needed a friend so she is really precious to me.

Holly (Domestic Shorthair)

Holly is a 3 year old Domestic Shorthair. Holly likes to sleep and chase the two larger male cats that live with us. This is how we found her.

We pulled up to our old fishing cabin and two tiny kittens ran out of the weeds. They were dehydrated and starved. I went inside and opened a can of tuna and put it in a plastic bowl and fixed another bowl of water. I brought the food out and put it on the porch. The kittens crawled into the bowl and ate the tuna soooo fast. Then they started licking the crumbs off each other. The only thing that we had to carry them home in was an old trash can. So we put them in the trash can and loaded them into the car for the ride home.

The next morning I took them to the vet. After examining them, he stated that they were so malnourished and dehydrated that they wouldn't have lasted another day had we not found them. He gave them their shots and we brought them home to stay. Now both sisters, Holly and Val, live with us and our three other rescue cats, a mouse and a goldfish.

Those kittens were so young when we found them that I don't think they could have even been weaned. They have no idea that they are cats. I sincerely believe that they believe that they are just small furry humans!

Treasure Your Freedom - Join A Historical Group

I quit my job a little over a year and a half ago. Since then I have begun doing things I was unable to do while working. I have joined both the Daughters of the American Revolution and the United Daughters of the Confederacy. There is also an organization called the Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War.

To become a member of the DAR and UDC,you must have a blood relative who fought in these war times. Unfortunately it is my understanding that if you are adopted that you cannot be a member. I don't know if adoption is an issue with the Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War.

I was fortunate with the DAR application that I had several relatives who were members before me. I had to provide very little "more current" information. As for the UDC, that application was easy as well as I had lots of information available about my great grandfather.

I cannot express how much I have enjoyed attending these meetings. Hearing the stories of what happened during these historic battles makes one appreciate how they helped to mold our country into the nation we call the United States of America.

I have been actively talking with my children to educate them on their ancestors and making them aware of how they fought for our freedom. If we do not educate our children now, these bits and pieces of historic information could be lost FOREVER.

I recently gave a talk at the UDC meeting about my great grandfather. There was a new transfer member at this meeting as well. What a wonderful coincidence that HER great grandfather had served in the war with MY great grandfather in Savannah!

I am sure that all families have stories that SHOULD be shared with the current generations and future generations. I am already planning to join the local Historical Society when it meets again in the fall. If you don't have a desire to join any historical group, please please please at least educate your children and document in writing what you know of your family's history to be passed on after you are gone.

Save Cherry Pits for Heating Pads

I save cherry pits to make my own heating pad. I wash the pits and dry them thoroughly. Either put the washed pits outside in the hot sun or heat them in an 250 degree F oven for one half hour or until thoroughly dried. When dried, I put them in a cotton tube sock and tightly tie with a cotton string or you can sew it shut.

I usually lightly spray water on any microwave heating pad before heating. Place in the microwave for three minutes or until heated. Do not over heat. This time can vary according to the size of the heating pad or the microwave. The cherry pits seem to hold the heat longer than other methods that I tried.

The size of the heating pad can vary. I like to have different sizes for different aches and pains. It is advisable to use all natural materials like cotton since these are less likely to melt/burn when heated.

Source: I came up with this idea from visiting a farm tour. During the colonial days, cherry pits were saved and heated in small metal pans and then added to a bed warmer to keep the beds warm during the cold months.

Wear Special Occasion Clothing Before the Event

This is about clothing purchased for a special occasion. I'd like to suggest that you give it a trial run by wearing it for at least half an hour in your home. You'll quickly find out what is missing, what needs repairing, etc.

I did this, and discovered some strategic buttons becoming loose - and repaired the damage immediately. Better to fix at home than have a problem at an event!

Hiding Places for Cash at Home

There are times we need cash for various purchases but don't want to make a trip to the bank or pay charges at a cash machine. I don't like carrying cash every day but want it hidden in a safe spot in my home. I came up with a few good hiding places so the cash isn't all in one spot:

  • Inner pocket of a shirt or jacket never worn but can't bring self to get rid off (come on, we all have at least one of those). ;-)

  • Between pages of a book no one will likely pick up to read.

  • Inside a non-matched sock placed randomly under the matched socks.

  • In the toe of a pair of shoes rarely worn.

  • Between the padding and cover of the ironing board.

  • Between the picture and cardboard backing of a favorite framed photo.

Hope you all share your ideas and, of course, you really should tell someone you trust of your hiding places 'just in case'. ;-)

Short Cuts for an Injured Hand

When I had surgery on my right hand (I am right-handed) I came up with some short cuts. I used the dough hooks on my stand up mixer to make meatloaf. I fixed an old sock onto the end of a long wooden spoon to put sun screen on my back and shoulders.

Do you have anymore hints for others?

Tips for Faster Bed Making

I have a few tips to making beds faster and simpler.

  1. I have a double bed and buy queen size sheets and covers, with the deep pockets. I stretch them over both sets of mattress!

  2. I fold my bedspreads/comforters in half, and sew a button in the middle of both top and bottom, makes it easier to have sides the same length.

Another tip for curtains. I like to find the simple, easy way to do things, if possible. For instance, I use a silver shower pole with silver rings, attached to a liner and cloth shower curtain, to match the room window they go in. In my apartment they are just the perfect length. My bedroom gets sun early in the day and I have a navy window liner/cloth curtain that gives me total darkness. Why pay for expensive curtains?

Dear Webby's Joke of the Day

A patient was waiting nervously in the examination room of a famous specialist. "So who did you see before coming to me?" asked the doctor.

"My local General Practitioner."

"Your GP?" scoffed the doctor. "What a waste of time. Tell me, what sort of useless advice did he give you?"

"He told me to come and see you."

Building a Dog Treadmill

Can anyone tell me how I can build a treadmill small enough for my standard dachshund? I got the idea from an Animal Cops episode where they confiscated one that was built to train pit bulls for fighting.

Believe me that's not what I want. I hate the idea of any animal being fought for money or any other reason. But I have a dachsie who's overweight and I am unable to walk her due to my own health problems. There are also too many mean strays in the area.

She's just not getting enough exercise in our fenced yard. I had a "people" treadmill before and she enjoyed it so I know she'd get on it. Can anyone tell me how to build one?

I also don't know how to determine who would be interested in purchasing it. Please help if you can. I'd appreciate it.
