Shadow (Yorkshire Terrier)

What is your pet's name? Hi, Meet Shadow! Shadow is a Yorkshire Terrier. I like to call him a Terror! Shadow came by his name because he always follows me around. He is my little shadow. Where I go, my Shadow goes. :)

Shadow is only 4 months old so he is still real hyper. He steals socks and tears up tissues and paper towels all over the house! I got shadow from a breeder who sold me Shadow as a pet quality dog. I am not going to breed or show so I don't need anything real expensive. I got him as a Christmas gift to myself since I just got separated from my husband.

In this photo we were at the beach and it was so cold that my son put Shadow in his coat. Shadow kept popping his head out to see if it was safe to come out. A big gust of wind would come up and Shadow would tuck his head back in Chris' coat.

Today's Tips

Slippery New Shoes

To keep new shoes from being too slippery take sandpaper and rough up the bottoms. If you don't have sandpaper rub them against rocks, bricks or concrete.

Shower Cleaning Tips

Tips for cleaning the shower and keeping it clean. Post your shower cleaning tips below.

After I shower, I use the towel that I used to dry my hair (which was fresh before I used it and is only wet) and I dry the shower off. This removes any conditioner spills, extra soap that didn't get rinsed, etc. and keeps the shower clean. This way, I save money on cleaner, and introduces fewer chemicals to the environment. Plus, it's easier if I do it every day.

Cleaning a Wood Stove Window

I clean my wood stove window by placing a large newspaper under it to catch the soot that drops while I am cleaning it.

I use window cleaner, car washing fluid or whatever I have and spray on the stove window. I rub with newspaper and then I toss the paper into the stove.

To keep the windows from becoming sooty quickly, I use paper to start my fire and try to keep paper and wood away from the door so the window does not get soot stained. I want to get as much heat out that window as possible.

Creamed Tuna on Toast

I raised 4 children with this old standby recipe and I have never met anyone who didn't like it! First you make a basic white sauce. If you don't know how to do this it's pretty easy:

Add:

1/4 cup butter
1/4 cup flour and stir together in a frying pan over medium heat until it starts to sizzle.

Add 1 cup of milk and 1 cup of water and heat stirring occasionally until thickened then stir in 1 can of drained tuna and salt and pepper to taste. Serve over toast. Good side dishes are home fries, green beans, whatever veggies you like. This recipe can be stretched as needed by making more white sauce and you can add more tuna if you like but it is not necessary.

Potluck Tips

Tips for throwing a successful potluck. Post your ideas.

If you're planning on having a potluck at your home, you might want to have some extra empty food containers on hand, in case anyone wants to take home some of someone else's foods. This way they're not taking your bowls and having to bother returning them. Such as empty cool whip bowl, cottage cheese or sour cream containers. All they'll have to do is toss them away, once they're finished with the food.

Dish Soap As a Degreaser

Don't buy degreaser. My mother taught me to use Dawn or Palmolive (or a similar dish soap in terms of grease fighting) directly on the stove top or on another area that you want to clean grease off. Just put it on thickly, let it set for about 5 minutes. Then scrub off. It is amazing how well this cleans compared to fantastic or other specially made cleaners.

Help Dealing With High Interest Credit Card Debt

I have a major problem. When I was in my late teens I moved out on my own and got approved for two credit cards. Of course not thinking ahead I maxed them both out and beyond that point. It is now several years later and my 23% interest rate credit cards still exist with a combinded total of about $6,000.00.

I haven't used them in about two years now. I have a very strict budget and only can afford to pay about $10.00 over the minnium payment due. But with the interest rate being so high it doesn't seem to make a difference what I pay on them I can never get ahead.

I really want to pay this dept off! I want to buy a house so badly, but with my credit being so bad I feel like that is never going to happen. I have tried calling my credit card companies to lower the interest rate but they are not very helpfull. What can I do? I need advice so badly, please help. Thank you.

Restoring a Plywood Hutch

I have a hutch that I really would like to restore. My mother bought it for me at a yardsale last year and it is my first hutch, so it is very special to me. My kitchen table is light oak which I love but the hutch is dark brown and not solid wood. I think it is like plywood or something so I don't think I can sand it down and restain it, but I could be wrong. I thought about painting it but I don't want to ruin the material. The hutch is large and has alot of detail in the bottom cabinets. I have filled it with white china pieces that are special to me. Any suggestions would be great.

Thank you,
Robin

Convincing My Boyfriend To Eat Cheaper Food

My boyfriend whom I live with only likes name brands when it comes to grocery shopping. I should mention we are on a strict budget. If I buy anything that is not name brand he will not even touch it. I myself was raised on off brand products and don't really see that big of a difference. I will say a few items I will only buy name brand, but for the most part I don't see what the big deal is. Any suggestions? Thank you.

Cleaning Brass Inlays On Tile Floor

I clean a church and have a little dillema. The foyer has a very nice ceramic tiled floor with some brass inlayed strips. (I just found them a little bit ago because the last person didn't pay attention to them).

I've started cleaning them with an SOS pad... yep on my hands and knees. I have found that the 'grime' I'm taking off isn't very thick. Is there something anyone knows of that I can use. Maybe even something to spray on and then use a floor machine? The trouble with that is, the inlays are below the actual tile surface so I'm not sure that using a floor machine will work.

Are there any cleaning people out there that have experience with brass inlay on a floor? I thank you for any input.. or even ideas to keep me off my knees scrubbing all of them. Thank you so much!!

Kathy

Remove Tape Residue from Dry Erase Board

Our dry erase board use to be used for employee schedules. They used black electrical tape (at least 4 years ago) to create a grid. I recently removed all of the tape and there is a black residue left. I need to know what I can use to safely clean this board to remove that residue. We don't want to spend money on a new one if we can salvage this one.

Thanks,
Rene

Looking For Inspirational Poem

I am looking for a poem, it's about cancer, or finding the guts to undergo treatment again, when the cancer has returned. I heard this long speech or poem on Murphy Brown when her cancer returned and she did not want to suffer the treatments again. Her male co-worker/friend talked her into doing the right thing. It's very powerful as encouragement to keep trying. Fight to live.

Smooth Stove Top Cleaning

I tried the oven cleaner on my smooth top stove to remove a ring and it did not work. It made more mess that I cannot remove now. It's baked on because the burner was on as directed. I have tried baking soda with and without lemon juice, vinegar soaked on with paper towel, and cleaner made for the smooth top. Nothing so far has worked. At this point, I don't think anything could make it look worse. Any suggestions? A. Cope

How to Have a Dream Wedding on a Budget
By Rachel Greenberg

No one wants to pay more than they have to for anything, especially something as costly as a wedding. And if you're like me, and you had to foot your own bill, then you certainly want to keep costs down. I was afraid it couldn't be done, especially since my husband and I live in one of the most expensive regions of the country. But my wedding is proof that it can be done, and here's how:
