Today's Tips

Healthy Low-Cal Soup

I love cold soup in the summer! I buy whatever veggie I like and is in season, Then I saute 1 onion in a very little bit of oil, add 1 can or equivalent chicken broth, and desired veggie. Cook until soft, cool slightly, then puree in blender with either fat-free evaporated milk or buttermilk. Chill overnight. Add salt and pepper to taste. Healthy, very low-cal and almost no fat! Change Your Bill Due Dates to Align with Your Paydays

Sometimes due dates on bills don't align with my paydays. If this happens, I simply call the company and ask if I can change when my account comes due. For example, payday is the 1st and 15th, so I ask for a due date of 8th or 22nd. This gives the mail plenty of time to get there. Most companies, especially credit card companies don't mind at all. This saves a lot of money on late fees and improves my credit rating. By Shopmeister

Featured Feedback: 5 Energy Savings To Keep You Cool Last year I made new drapes for the entire house. I saved in several ways. But the "total" energy saver was I "lined" all the drapes/curtains. The winter heat bill was actually lower and the first bill of the summer (we are in Florida) with air conditioning on for a full month now. The bill was "wayyy lower" than any previous summers. When the drapes/curtains were mostly light cool looking sheers and weaved patterns. I actually found most of my fabric on clearance tables and the same for the lining. Some I lined with a specific color from the curtain, some I lined with a darker or lighter contrasting color. The living room curtains are "magenta" which I made then stenciled with black fabric paint five different oriental symbols. It was very time consuming but well worth the time to have one of a kind drapes.

Featured Feedback: Rust Removal

I've tested a bunch of rust removers and converters and the best performer for rust conversion (by a LONG shot) is Duro Extend. I used to buy it at Home Depot but have been getting it cheaper at a local car parts place. It's the chemical of choice for Palomar Observatory, which is located in a high moisture environment plus winds which whip off paint. It converts rust to a black, paintable surface. You do need a top coat so don't let it go for weeks after conversion. Almost any paint will do.

Keep Cat From Walking on My Roof

I have an elderly neighbor that leaves his door open at night for his beloved cat. I know that his cat is a handful, his drapes are shredded! The problem is the cat climbs on my roof at night. My roof is flat and it is noisy and wakes me up. I then have a hard time going back to sleep. I tried the gallon water jugs in the yard. I do get up and try to hose the cat, but he has caught on to me. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Sue from California

Sure, some of the items in their lists might be similar, but you will notice that for the most part, they are vastly different.

200+ Summertime Activities for Kids
By Deborah Taylor-Hough

Since we don't use the phrase "I'm bored!" in our home, we don't hear our kids complaining about being bored during those long days at home during the summer months. But ... I have to admit that we're still an incredibly normal family. Even without the "b-word" in their vocabulary, there are still those times when my three children (ages 15, 11 and 7) just seem to be at a total loss for something constructive to do.
