I have a 101 year old friend who passed this idea down to several generations. When she was a teenager, their basketball team got stranded in a snow storm in Iowa. The farmer's wife, where they stayed overnight, served breakfast of waffles, polish sausage and sauerkraut. You will be surprised how good it tastes with the sweet syrup all on the same plate. I always serve it that way and have had a lot of compliments.
