Lexie (Schnauzer/Poodle)

Lexie is about 2 years old and is a Schnoodle. She is my grandson Kyler's Christmas gift.

She likes to play ball, run quicker than any dog I known, sleep with her paw on my grandson, TREATS!

She is the most loving dog, and every one just smiles when she is around.

Here she is all dressed up and nowhere to go! Notice her good fashion taste with pearls!

Gigantic Tomato Plant

My husband planted this one tomato plant he received from my sister as a birthday present and it grew to over 9 feet tall and had a span of at least 16 feet. The plant yielded an abundance of tomatoes and there are many on the plant to still ripen. No special care was given to the plant it just seemed to thrive when planted in this spot.

Countdown to Thanksgiving

Believe it or not now is the time to start organizing your holiday meal. It does not matter whether your planning for 4 or 40, there are a few things you can do now to make it a whole lot easier on yourself on the big day.

First, plan out how many you will have to feed and whether they will all be bringing a dish or whether you will be making the whole meal. If having friends in, this would be the time to start looking for the best invitations or making your own. Handprint turkey invites are something your children could even help with and Grandma and Grandpa would love to get. Fall leaves laminated to a simple card with a ribbon always makes an elegant invitation. Here in Colorado, the aspens are turning colors; reds and gold and oranges. You can buy plain invitations at Walmart, a few leaves sprinkled on a card and then clear contact paper cut to size and laid over makes a beautiful card. A beautiful Maple leaf with Happy Thanksgiving written in gold pen also is beautiful. If you are having a buffet or a potluck, remember to include on the invitation what you expect each guest to bring. This leaves nothing to chance and gives you an opportunity to ask each guest to bring thier favorite dish. OK, now you have your invitations. Thanksgiving this year falls on Thursday, November 22 (for the United States) so you will need to send these out at least by the 22 of October, if planning a buffet and by Nov 1 if you are doing all the cooking.

Plan out your menus now and make your shopping list. This way you can take advantage of grocery store sales and the last of the farmer's markets in your areas. Also planning your menu ahead of time lets you make some of your dishes ahead and freeze them. Then you can just pop them in the oven with your turkey to reheat. Most casserole type dishes can even be made up to a month ahead of time. Here is a craft for your older kids: Buy a piece of foam core board and cut it in half and have your kids make a menu board that can be propped up in your living room. Decorate it with stickers and thier best handwriting, it will be fun for them and your guests. While you're at it, when you buy your kids their Halloween pumpkins, get one for yourself and make some homemade pumpkin for your pies. An average size pumpkin will make between 2-3 pies and the canned pumpkin sold in stores usually is not even real pumpkin, but squash. Cut your pumpkin in halves or quarters and cook cut side down for 30 minutes in a 350 degree oven. Turn cut side up and cook until the pumpkin is tender and easily pierced with a fork. Remove from oven and cool and then scoop out cooked pumpkin. Measure it according to your favorite recipe for pie and freeze in individual containers.

Let's talk table: While you are buying those pumpkins also look for the small decorative gourds and Indian corn.. These, sprayed with clear spray pain,t can be used for years as a centerpiece on your table in a pretty basket or, with some ribbons and wire, you can wire them together and make little wreaths to hang on the backs of your dining room chairs, which is all the rage now for parties. Now is the time to pull out your table linens and make sure that you have enough for your tables. Quick decoration for table cloths: you can buy pre-cut leaves that are made out of felt or, if using plastic, you can also buy foamy leaves to glue to the corners and center of your cloth using fabric or craft glue. Quick and easy fun while you are watching TV with the kids. Felt leaves could also be blanket stitched to the cloth table cloths. Quick napkin rings can be made from toilet paper rolls and some silk leaves. Cut the leaves off of each stem and hot glue them to your toilet paper rolls. If you live in an area of the country where you can collect small pine cones and acorns, you could also glue these to the top of the leaves or add a small card with your guests names on them. Make a thankful tree for a decoration in your living room. Find an old branch with many arms to it. Find a pot or a basket that it will stand in, Pour in some Plaster of Paris. When that is dry, cover it with some moss. Cut slips of paper. In the corners of the slips, punch a hole and add a ribbon hanger. Invite your guest to write what they are thankful for and then hang them on the tree, Kids really get a kick out of this. Check and make sure that you have enough tables and, if not, put in your reservations early to rent or borrow those extra tables and chairs.

Now on to your serving pieces, nothing is more frustrating than pulling out your serving pieces to find that your turkey platter is cracked. Doing this ahead of time leaves you room to replace any pieces that need replacing. Remember that your local thrift store will be putting out platters and serving dishes usually with a thanksgiving theme or fall theme right before Thanksgiving so this is the time to make additions or replacements. I love silver-plate and I pick it up all year long in thrift stores for a song, but if you don't like to polish silver (I find it relaxing), you can always pick up green or clear glass serving pieces. Green can also be used for Christmas. Check out the silverware box or bucket, you can also find most of the big spoons you will need for serving for around a dollar or less. Also remember that you can make your own fancy serving pieces by stacking glass pieces on top of one another. A platter on top of glass bowl or vase suddenly has presence on the table. With a little clear silicone, you can even make these selections permanent.

Having done all of these in the weeks before your big day can greatly cut down on your stress level. Cooking and freezing dishes that you plan to serve on weekends when you are not working will save you time and stress. I hope these ideas give you some motivation to start planning your celebration now so that like me you can be watching the parades and games while just having to put the finishing touches on your dinner.

Celebrate and know that I am grateful for all of you readers this Thanksgiving day!

Plant Birdseed To Feed Birds

If you have bird feeders and like to attract goldfinches here's a cheap way to do it. No need to buy special seeds! Just sort out some sunflower seeds from the mixed seed or keep a handful from a bag of sunflower seed. Store over winter in a cool, dry, dark place. Plant them after the ground warms up where they can be seen from you windows.

Some of these will grow to be what everyone expects a sunflower to look like, tall with a single seed bearing head. These will probably be eaten by squirrels. Many of the other seeds, however, will branch out everywhere and produce many small heads. The smaller heads produce smaller seeds that squirrels aren't interested in. The goldfinches love the smaller heads!! We had just one of the seeds grow in a bush shape and it produced many, many heads. How many? I stopped counting at 300! We often let some volunteer sunflowers grow in the flower beds where they simply dropped from the feeders.

Cooking With Fresh Pumpkins

Since we are approaching fall and Halloween, pumpkins are everywhere. Use this easy way to make your own pumpkin puree.

For a whole pumpkin, stab it with a knife to create steam vents.

For a Jack-O-Lantern, (less than 2 days cut), Put his eyes, nose, and mouth back in where they came out-they need not fit tight.

Then cook the pumpkin whole in the microwave or in the oven until tender, like cooking a squash. Be sure to set it on a dish as it will weep juice.

Cut the pumpkin into pieces, cull the seeds, and rake the meat off the rind with a spoon. The peel comes off very easy now. Drop the meat into the blender to puree.

I like to make pumpkin pie with mine. So I put the eggs and milk into the blender first then add pumpkin until smooth and creamy. Zip in the last ingredients and spices until well blended then freeze in a quart zip-loc bag. When I am ready to bake pumpkin pie, all I have to do is put the mix into the pie shell and bake. Sure saves time on Thanksgiving morning. (Or when that teen-ager comes in and announces that he must have a baked item tomorrow morning.)

Use Brown Eyeshadow As Lip Color

Small Amount Of Baby Supplies

Instead of taking a huge nappy bag when you're out and about, I place 2 disposable nappies, a change mat, nappy disposal bag, small pack of wet wipes and a tube of waterless hand wash in a ziplock bag.

It's perfect to pop into a pram or glove box and makes it easier to get out of the house quickly!

Decorating For Fall With Squash

Fall is a great time to decorate with winter squash, pumpkins and gourds. They last a long time and can double as ingredients in your favorite recipes. I like to place a variety of fall produce in different sizes on a silver tray, and finish off the look with a pumpkin scented candle and some silk autumn leaves. An inexpensive but beautiful centerpiece!

Mark Shampoo To Avoid Mistakes

This is for people that wear glasses. So many times I have been in the shower and attempted to pick up the shampoo but discovered I had the conditioner (of course it was wasted at that time) I discovered two ways to not mix the bottles up. I have placed a large rubber band around the shampoo bottle to identify it. I have also used a large marker to put a large "X" on the shampoo bottle. I hope this will save someone from wasting as much as I did before marking the bottles.

Tell Stories Of Those Who Have Passed At Thanksgiving

As the family arrives, ask them to think of something nice that happened, with those members who have passed. After the family prayer, have as many candles, whatever size will work on your Table in votives. Curl some ribbon around the holders. Have a lighted taper candle that will be passed on to the next person, telling the next story. They can be funny stories or stories of our Vets. Whatever fits the story teller.

Spray Paint Watermelons For Halloween

While working in our field, I noticed all these wild watermelons in various sizes growing in our field. With Halloween around the corner, I decided to use spray paint and decorate them to look like pumpkins. With the expense of pumpkins, this was cheap alternative with only the cost of the orange and black paint. You can also use construction paper or felt for the face, if they are used indoors.

Natural Weed Killer

Ingredients

  • 1 litre (35 fl. oz) of boiling water (hot tap water will also work but not quite as well)
  • 5 tsp. vinegar
  • 6 tsp. salt (regular table salt)
  • 1 Tbsp. lemon juice
  • 2 tsp. dishwasher (machine) detergent (powder is better than liquid, but liquid will work ok)

Directions

Mix all together. Take care with hot water!

Natural Weed Killers are simple substances with a direct and obvious action. They destroy plant life for a short period. They are substances encountered naturally but in small quantities. Their presence is well-known and normally not harmful. But when applied in larger doses the results are usually obvious in a very short time. As always, these methods need due caution so please wear protective eye/hand/body protection.

This weed killer acts at the point they are used. After treatment their damaging effect is dissipated. Vinegar is made of Acetic Acid along with other weak organic acids. It has become a popular 'cottage garden' alternative for those who dislike modern herbicides. This mixture works by disrupting membranes and causing leakage of plant cells. The damage to plants appears rapidly and even quicker on hot days. The acid is not around long enough to have any lasting effect on earthworms, soil invertebrates or organic matter breakdown. The good news is that it won’t cause any lasting or apparent harm to pets or children.

This mixture can kill: Canadian Thistle, Clover, Dandelion, Foxtail, Ivy Leaf, Milkweed, Pigweed, Poison Hemlock, Ragweed, Quackgrass, Bluegrass, plus mosses, liverworts and more. However it is not selective and harms all the plants it touches so take care!

Excess salt poisons the soil. Many important organisms: bacteria, fungi, earthworms; will be killed by salinity. It will eventually wash out, even so I would not use it on land intended for cultivating plants. For some gardeners it is an option to consider with drives and gravel areas where plants are not intended to grow and where run off can be contained. NB: Remember, salt is not biodegradable, so overuse use will eventually be detrimental to surrounding areas.

Jake of the Day

Here's today's joke of the day courtesy of Dear Webby.

Upon retiring from the service, Don, needed a new ID card showing he had gone from active duty to retirement status. But the photo taken of him was not particularly good and he wasn't at all quiet about it.

"If I have to carry that ID around with me for the rest of my life," he complained to the photographer, "I want a better picture." "Want a better picture?" asked the photographer defiantly. "Then bring us a better face!"

Help With 7 Year Old Picky Eater

My child is a very picky eater. Over the top. He will only eat a certain type of chicken nuggets from a certain store. That was for a few months, now he won' eat them. He is the same with Salami. He won't eat really any veggies except the occasional not cook carrot or canned green beans. He will not eat meat except a certain type of hamburger cooked only on the stove top. He is afraid of the texture and look of food. Last night he cried for 20 minutes because we made him eat 1 broccoli and 1 cooked carrot that were dipped in ketchup. I know, make him sit until he eats, well he will go for over 2 1/2 hours (he is 7). Any suggestions to help a picky eater with sight and texture phobias? Being cruel and forceful with this child is a waste of time. In every other aspect he is a great caring fun loving child. He is not Autistic so I know that is not his problem. Thank you.

Weed Treating Lawn in Fall

Are there any lawn and garden aficionados that can help this city girl keep up with the Jones'? I'm losing my grass to weeds. It seems to have stopped its summer growth, or at least slowed down in the last few weeks. I found a missing (unopened) bag of lawn food / weed killer in the garage.
