Today's Tips

Dry Flowers with Kitty Litter

To dry your flowers, cut the flower so one inch of the stem is left on. Place face up into a coffee can full of kitty litter, pour more kitty litter to cover the flower. (roses should only be half opened) this can take a few days to a few weeks depending on the humidity and the flower. Great way to save prom, wedding, or a garden flowers. By Dee

Menu Tips for People with High Cholesterol

Having been recently diagnosed with high cholesterol I have decided to change some of my eating habits, along with exercise and having to take lipitor.

I have divided the 7 days of the week as follows for my main meal:

Fish - consume 2 x per week

Chicken or turkey - consume 2 x per week

Pasta - consume once per week

Veggie meal - consume once per week

Red meat - consume once per week

I have started walking 2.5 miles 3 to 4 times per week.

Switch to 1% milk (I tried skim, but detested it and also tried soy and hated it)

Eliminate as much as possible of animal fat. Consume whole grains, fresh fruits, veggies and limit eggs to 2 per week.

Include ground flaxseed into either fat free yogurt, cereal or salad.

I have banned all soy products from my house as I recently became aware of their affinity to stimulate estrogen, which in turn is a factor in breast cancer.

Happy cholesterol lowering!

Use a Toilet Paper Roll to Organize Messy Wires

I recently rearranged my office, leaving a mess of exposed wires of all kinds. I covered a toilet tissue roll with wrapping paper, then wrapped all the wires into a hank and tucked them inside the roll. Cheaper, smaller and more clever than the large and unsightly tube sold at the electronics store for this purpose. By Linda

Cut Cleansing Cloths to Save Money

Regarding those samples of facial cleansing cloths you receive in the mail or buy at the store... I find that they are too big and I waste a lot of the cleanser on them, so I cut each cloth into 4 equal squares. They are just big enough to wash my whole face without wasting any of the cleanser on them. This gives me 4 times as many to use! By Laura T

Clean and Reuse Plastic Wrap

Don't throw away plastic wrap after you are done using it, instead, wash it and dry it and use it again. Saves money on expensive plastic wrap!

Save Your Change for a Special Outing

Have everyone in the family put all their quarters, dimes, nickels, pennies into a "bank" on a regular basis. (daily, or weekly).

Once a year, count it up and use it for a special outing, or purchase, or for a favourite local charity. Or bank it in a good-interest bearing account and save it all for retirement fun.

There are many containers that come into the house that can be used for the "bank". I use a large Tupperware container.

Personalize the above idea to what fits your family. In Canada you can put in the $1 and $2 coins as well.

Kind Regards

Fabric Softener Sheets Remove Hair from Clothing

You can use fabric softner sheets, any brand, to get pet hair off of your items like clothes, furniture (this one works great), and other things. Also you can pick up dust with these also. They work great!

Ask for 800 Numbers

When an out-of-state company you are dealing with starts to give you their regular phone number stop them and ask for their 800 number. You will be surprised at how many companies have 800 numbers, but tell their employees to give the regular number first. Save a bundle working with other people's money. By Nancy

Use for Kleenex Box

Reuse old Kleenex boxes for storing folded up grocery store bags that you want to use later. You can then grab the bag just like you grab a tissue out of the box.

Drilling in the Ceiling

When drilling holes in the ceiling a lot of dust can fall down. If possible, ask a helper to hold the vacuum nozzle near the area you are drilling. If that is not possible you can also use a cheap shallow plastic bowl or the plastic lid from a coffee can to catch the dust. Just poke a hole in it and put it down over the drill bit and push it down past the drilling threads leaving enough clearance to drill the length hole you need.

Featured Feedback: RE: Organizing a Linen Closet

At work we put the blankets in a plastic (garbage) bag (be sure there are no holes) and use the vacuum to suck out all the air then tie the bag securely. Your blankets will be compressed so that they take up less space. This can also be done with clothes when you pack them away for the season and also with sheets and pillowcases. Be sure to mark them or use clear bags to see what is in them.

Featured Feedback: RE: Tips for Cleaning the Bathroom with Small Children

I have 4 children and worry about the effects of chemicals on them. I clean almost everything with vinegar and/or baking soda. If the chemicals aren't good for your child, they probably aren't good for you either. For tough spots, use a rough sponge to help you clean. By the way, outdoors chemicals worry me too - we use vinegar as a weed killer.

Painting Over Vanished Cabinets

Hi, My sister bought a really nice house but for some reason the kitchen cupboards are made of plywood. In an attempt to make them look good, they've been varnished too many times-and each coat is THICK. She wants me to help paint them-I think they should be stripped first, she doesn't. Does anyone have any experience with painting over varnish? What kind of paint did you use? If you stripped it, did you put on a sealer and then paint? Also, there is one cabinet that is laminated-how does one paint over that? Please help!! Elisabeth from Milwaukee

Frugal Windshield Repair

I got pulled over recently and was warned by the officer that I needed to replace my windshield. It has a pretty substantial crack in it. So I go down to the windshield repair shop and they want 600 dollars to do it... the car might be worth twice that. Anyone have any advice for getting this done for cheaper? Thank you, Val

Strategies for Family Togetherness

I don't know about you guys, but it seems like families can get pretty scattered, even living under the same roof. In our house, everyone has their own TV and their own agendas and responsilbilities. What do you do to keep the family together? There just seems to be a real backwards notion that anything related to the family gets in the way of life, rather than the other way around. When I was young, it was quite a bit different. Sandy in AZ

Crib Pad Melted in Dryer on Clothes

Hi, I am desperate! A babies crib pad melted in my dryer and the "plastic" stuff is all over everything. I've tried quite a few things to get it off. WD-40, Fantastic, Goo Gone and even paint thinner. All brand new baby clothes... I've been working on and off for two days trying to find something that would work. I've rewashed everything twice now (didn't put anything back into the dryer!) and it's not budging. PLEASE SOMEONE HELP!! Thanks! PS: Do you think a dry-cleaner would have something that would work? katparrott

Every Penny Counts
By Scott Bilker

It sure does-especially when you're paying back debt. How many times have you walked out into the parking lot of a supermarket and spotted a penny on the ground? Plenty of times no doubt. You might bend over to pick one up if you see Lincoln staring at you, but for the most part you just keep walking by.
