Sassie (Sheltie)

This is our dog Sassie, she is 10 years old, we have had her since she was a puppy. She is a Miniature Collie (Sheltie) and we bought her from a breeder. She is a great dog and she loves to play with the kids, she likes herding them like they were sheep, trying to keep them all together. She also likes to play with her little "sister", our puppy, who is 6 months. I think Sassie is teaching her things, some good and some not so good.

Ziggy Zeek (Cat)

This is Ziggy Zeek, ZZ for short. He is 9 1/2 years old

I got ZZ from my Mom and ZZ does not like any other cats. Unknown to ZZ he shares the house with 3 other cats upstairs. ZZ has his own room down in the basement. He likes to eat and sleep by the computer.

Today's Tips

Organizing Email

I treat email just like a paper file. I don't like to let email pile up in my in box just like I don't like paper piling up on my desk. I make sure I file all email into one of the folders I have created. I also create filter that automatically files email from certain people in the appropriate folder.

Boxing Up Items When Moving

Load everything that you can into boxes. You can stack them on a dolly to move multiple boxes at a time and they allow you to easily pack a moving truck. If you are in the habit of saving the original boxes for electronic devices like DVD players and TVs now is a great time to put them to use. Linens, clothing, pillows and cushions should be packed into bags or boxes as well.

You can also pack clothing into duffel bags, trunks and other luggage. Pack them lightly to prevent wrinkles. Use blank newsprint for packing your nicest items to prevent newspaper ink from transfering onto belongings.

Avoiding Trans Fats

In 2006, all of the nutrition labels on food products are supposed to indicate trans fats. Stay away from them all! Trans fats are made by heating and re-heating oil.

Hydrogenated fats are made by adding hydrogen to oil that's been super heated so food lasts a long time (like plastic). Even partially hydrogenated is bad for you!

Buying Chunk Cheese

Whenever I find chunk cheese on sale, I take advantage of it. After home I grate it. I usually put 2 cups of shredded cheese per small zipper bag, squeezing all the air out as possible, seal and then put them in a big ziploc bag labeled "Cheddar" or "Swiss", etc. that is kept in the freezer.

That way if you send the kids or your husband to get a bag out for you, they don't have to search to much for it. It also sure beats having bags of cheese every where in your freezer. Now, it won't melt as easily after being frozen as it would before you froze it, but it's ok, otherwise.

Labeling Moving Boxes

Here are some tips for labeling boxes when you are moving.

  • Label items with a large, dark colored permanent marker.
  • Make sure to note the contents in the box and the room that you want to box to be put in in the new house. That makes unpacking much easier.
  • Clearly mark boxes with breakable items with "FRAGILE".
  • For a very organized move, mark each box with a number and keep an inventory of which items are in each box.
  • Put together a box (or multiple boxes) for items that you will need when you first get to your new house and then be sure to put it into the truck last so you will have it handy.

Cleaning Siding

I use Windex outdoor window cleaner to wash my windows on the outside. You know the kind that attaches to the hose and automatically mixes the cleaning liquid in the bottle with the water from the hose. When it is empty I save the dispenser and use it to clean my cedar siding. I fill the empty dispenser with straight Clorox Plus. The mixture that comes out is just strong enough to kill mildew and clean my siding. It actually reaches the second story so no ladder needed. I wait for about 1/2 hour then use the rinse setting which dispenses pure water. It works great.

Rotating Stockpiled Goods

When stockpiling groceries and other items, to save from making unnecessary trips out shopping, whether it's by using coupons, sales, or just your savvy shopping sense and skills. Be sure to rotate the items in your stockpile, like the grocers do, by putting the oldest items in front to use first. Check product expiration dates. The longer you have a food item, it'll eventually lose it's original taste. Aerosol cans tend to lose their spraying ability (ex: deodorant, shaving cream, etc.)

Moving Check List

Items needed for an organized move:

  • Large markers to mark boxes.
  • Check home improvement stores, liquor stores and grocery stores for free boxes.
  • A dolly for moving boxes and large appliances.
  • Moving blankets or old blankets to protect nice furniture.
  • Packing tape to seal moving boxes.
  • Twine, rope or clothesline to secure items in a moving truck.
  • Newspaper, newsprint, boxes and large plastic bags for packing items.

Not Losing Weight While Dieting

I am an insulin dependent diabetic and desperately want to lose some weight. (I need to lose 28 lbs.) I am finding it really difficult and have only lost 1 lb in 2 weeks despite following weight watchers to the letter and exercising for an hour 3 times a week. I am feeling really demoralized and would really love a few words of wisdom! Has anyone else had this problem and how did they overcome it?

Smoke Detector Problem

My smoke alarm is connected to electric supply and has started going off for no reason at all the last few days. I can not open it as it needs a special key which I was not supplied with. It is about 8 years old. It has a back up battery so I can't turn it off. It is driving my dog potty and I'll soon join her if it continues.
