Daily Thrifty Tips - September 13 & 14 2005

Daily Thrifty Tips
Volume Four, Number 221 September 13 & 14 2005
http://www.ThriftyFun.com

Hello,

We were busy installing a new server yesterday and didn't have time to send out newsletters. So today, we have a large issue with lots of photos, tips, requests and crafts. Please look over the requests and see if you have any advice to offer.

It's back to school time and we would like to publish some more back to school tips. What I think would be very helpful, especially for new parents, would be some tips about how to help kids keep track of their homework, learn good study habits and establish a good school routine. If you have any tips on those subjects, please submit them on the contest page.

Tip for your Wedding Day

"Never forget to check that your 15-year-old groomsmen remembered to bring his coat with him and did not switch it with your dad's, which is three sizes too big, and get to the wedding before you were already 1 hour late"

This is a pic of my cuzin's wedding. I was a groomsmen and was the 15-year-old that stalled the wedding. Right before the reception I found out that the coat was way too big. We were already an hour late, but we made it all the way to 1 1/2 hours late. I took the picture of my cuzin's face as soon as he found out my lil' accident and it turned into a groomsmen discussion. I had a blast and here's one memory I'll never forget, no matter how hard I try.

Hello Kitty Cake

I made this hello kitty cake for my precious daughter. I use a 8 inch cake pan, made the cake and set it to cool. As the cake was cooling I got Hello Kitty clipart from the internet and enlarged the picture. I printed it and cut out the face the eyes and nose and set aside.

I then made vanilla icing. Once the cake cooled for an hour, I split the icing in three parts for coloring. One bowl was fushia, with which I iced the cake. The next bowl was pure white. After icing the cake I put the cake for a few minutes in the refrigerator, then took it out and added the template of the hello kitty face on the middle of the cake and used a tooth pick to trace the shape.

I then used a small star tip to make the face. I used black gel for the eyes and yellow sprinkles for the nose. Then carefully I took out the template and out came Hello Kitty. I made a shell border around the bottom and top and tinted some icing in lavender for the flowers.

My daughter said to me "your the best mom in the whole world!"

Personalized Badge Holder
By Shauna Smith Duty

This personalized badge holder was created for nurses that work in a hospital. Not only does it have their name and professional title on it, but it's in neutral black and white to match practically any outfit. It also features charms attached that represent the wearer's personal interests; in this case, angels.

Pebbles (Shih Tzu)

This is Pebbles my little gangster diva. Pebbles is a pure bred Shih Tzu. She is 10 percent angel and 90 percent devil! LOL. She is 18 months old, she loves to get in trouble, it's her middle name! We love her to death.

John Hall and his Kids (Goats)

Pictured from left to right, MoMo, Georgia (MoMo's mom), Baby, Baby's kid Fancy and our "great kid" John Hall.

The goats are strictly pets and range in age from 2 1/2 to 8 years. John Hall just turned 2. The goats enjoy eating, especially alfafa and corn. They can be pretty picky about their hay. They are simply goats no special breed other than spoiled. John Hall loves to play basketball. He also likes toy cars and anything outside. His favorite foods are bananas and pancakes (which we spike with fruits, nuts and vegetables).

Bunnie's Brother Joey

Joey is a four year old Tabby, I think. My grandson calls him a blue cat. Sitting straight up he looks like he has a tuxedo on.

My son was working downtown with another guy on the roads, when someone pulled up beside them and threw Joey out. He called me and ask if I would keep him until he could get home because if he left him there he would get run over by a car, and I said yes. He looked to be about 4-5 weeks old. I fell in love with him and kept him for myself.

He was the baby until Bunnie came into the picture. He loves to kiss me on the nose and with his teeth sometimes to show his love for me, but never bites me hard enough to hurt. He loves to stay outside in the daytime, and comes in at night. He lays and watches the birds and squirrels. He use to sleep with me, and now has moved to the living room so Bunnie can be the baby.

Organizing the Nursery

Here's one of the ways that I organized my son's nursery before he was born, and I still use it now that he's a toddler! I found a nice, large rectangular wooden basket and lined the inside with a receiving blanket. I then took the diapers out of the package and placed them inside, there's enough room to fit a whole pack by making two rows, side by side. The basket looks nice sitting on the shelf of his changing table, and the diapers are right there within my reach (a must with a wiggly child on the table)!

Reusing Paper

How do you reuse paper? Please state the kind of paper you are reusing.

I don't know about you, but I seem to use a lot of paper in my printer and most of it is printed on but not needed as it only has a little info on it, but it's a shame to just toss it. I fold into 4 sections and cut then staple them together and set them by the phone and computer for notes and list. I do it with mail too. We get so much junk mail that is printed on one side and mostly the 8x11 sheets and I do the same to it I also give it to the kids to draw on!

Using Clear Plastic Jars

Use clear plastic peanut butter or other food containers for small craft items like glue sticks, buttons, beads, etc. or use them in the garage for screws, nails and other small hardware!

They are free and you are using them again and not sending them into the garbage!

Look for Coupons at the Customer Service Desk

Before shopping, whether at your local grocery or Target, or wherever, first check out the Customer Service desk, for any discount coupons, you might can use to save a few bucks off your checkout order. Maybe finding any this time, but, also remember next time, to check as well, you might miss out on something big, if not checking at all.

Jeans Blanket

Save up and ask friends and family for old jeans. Make a throw or bed blanket!

Cut every good part you can into the same size squares. Anything from 3 to 4 inch squares. Sew all these together in strips and then sew the strips together. Once you have the desired size for a throw or bed cover. Teens love these. To make it all tattered on the edges wash and dry many times!

Mother in Law Joke

A man, his wife, and his mother-in-law went on vacation to the Holy Land. While they were there, the mother-in-law passed away.

The undertaker told them, "You can have her shipped home for $5,000, or you can bury her here in the Holy Land for $150.00."

The man thought about it and told him he would just have her shipped home.

The undertaker asked, "Why would you spend $5,000 to ship your mother-in-law home, when it would be wonderful to be buried here and spend only $150.00?"

The man replied, "A man died here 2000 years ago, was buried here, and three days later he rose from the dead. I can't take that chance."

Denim Pocket Purse

Save old jeans and make all the rage now, the jeans purse. Cut jeans off at crotch and sew across. Take the straps from the legs! Sew the straps any length you wish. Add any decoration you wish and you have a one of a kind creation. I have seen these in different shops for $50 to $75 a purse!

Add a vintage brooch or hankie and old buttons, too.

By PatriciaL

What you'll need:

  • One leg of blue jeans
  • Sewing machine and thread
  • 3' of material suitable for straps: trim, fabric, ribbon, leather, etc.
  • Embellishments: trim, lace, patches, embroidered fabric, beads, or charms

Fold one leg of blue jeans in on itself. The inside will form the purse lining. Pull the hemmed end of the jeans over the top edge of the outer layer and fold it over. This creates a lip that makes a nice finished edge for the opening of the purse. Pin the lip in place, then turn the tube inside out.

Double stitch the bottom ends of the tube to create a reinforced pocket. This is the body of the purse. Turn it right side out and sew the top opening of the purse all the way around, then remove the pins.

Cut two 18" lengths or one 30" length from the strap material. Attach the strap(s) to the purse with reinforced stitches. The photo shows a very basic style, and at this point in the project, yours should look similar. Give your purse 'purse-onality' by adding trim, patches, lace, embroidery, charms, or beads. You may also sew on the cut out pocket from the original blue jeans, or the zipper, or label, for embellishment. Whatever you use, you can be certain that your denim pocket purse will be an original.

Small Signs for Learning Vocabulary and Math

I use this to learn more medical words concerning my illness, but I had used this when my daughter was in school. Get index cards blank or lined, colored or plain, and punch a hole in the top depending on how you want them to hang, thread a small piece of yarn thru and tie off. Then write the spelling words, math problems or anything the child is having trouble remembering on the cards and tape the yarn hanging signs around the house, I have them hanging from my bathroom mirror, inside the frig, on my desk, everywhere. It does help a lot! Good luck!

Saving Electricity in the Winter

I would like a information on what I can do to save money on electricity during the winter. I live in a condo and face the south east. I get lots of sun, therefore heat during the day. I asked a contractor about wrapping my water, heater he said that my heater is so new it is already insulated enough. Does it really save to turn off the water heater? Won't it just have that much more work to do when i turn it back on?

Thank you,

Neck Holder for Eyeglasses

Hello everyone!

Does anyone know where I can get one of those strings/beads you put on your eyeglasses so you can put them around your neck? They have these loops at the end through which the "ears" of your eyeglasses go.

Most places I have looked, no one even knows what I am talking about ... I guess they go back pretty far, lol.

Anyway, I would be most appreciative of any leads on this. I don't want silver or gold ... just something simple.

Thanks.

If I can't make pot-pouri from them, what else could be made?

How do you remove deodorant stains from dark shirts?

I have 2 black shirts that I have never been able to remove those white deodorant stains from. I've tried applying stain remover before laundering or hand washing, applying the detergent directly to the stain and have tried to scrub them out. I tried drying them in the machine, air dry, even drying in front of a fan, but everything seems to make it worse, the stains are still as prominent as ever.

They are both 100% cotton shirts with glitter designs on the front, so I would like to know if there is any safe way for me to remove these stains without completely ruining the designs on the front. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Spots on Stored Clothing

I have a problem with spots showing up on clothes. When I put them away for the summer (or winter - depending on the season), I pull them out for use the next year and I often find spots on them that weren't there when I put them away. I've tried everything I can think of to get rid of them but nothing seems to work. Even bleach won't work. It takes the color but leaves the spot.

The fabrics are usually a polyester/cotton blend and usually light colored. I also end up with this problem straight out of the dryer. In addition, we have an iron filter, water softner, and a water filter attached to the washer. I still end up with a grimy ring around the inside of the washer.

Can anyone help me with this?
