These poppies are the biggest I have ever seen. The blossoms are 6 inches across. I don't know why they are so big this year. They have always been a normal size. The weather has been colder than usual, so maybe it has something to do with that. By kflocey from Gladwin, MI Contest Contender!

Rocky is a 3 year old Boxer. Rocky was the runt out of a litter of Boxers I had. On the 2nd day after his birth, he died for a few minutes and his mother got his lungs working again. I bottle fed all 9 puppies, but had to feed Rocky about twice as often. I grew very attached to him as he did to me. So I had no choice but to keep him. He stole my heart. Rocky absolutely loves his toys. All of them. I can't even imagine living my life without the pure, unconditional love of Rocky. By tambri from Herrin, IL Contest Contender!

Keep Dogs Calm During Thunderstorms A friend who is a dog trainer and I were discussing my husky who hates thunderstorms! I was advised to rub her coat down with a dryer sheet to prevent the static from building up in her coat. It was also mentioned that if you have a dog who has issues riding in the car, it could be because of the static in the car. Try rubbing them down with the dryer sheets. I did try it before a storm and she was much calmer. By Julie from Brockton, MA Contest Contender!

Planning a Wedding on a $500.00 Budget With the 9/9/09 wedding day drawing ever nearer, I have decided that I want to spend no more than $500 on the whole thing. I have tailored down some ideas to create a great party while saving some extra money in the bank. I ordered my dress through eBay. My dress is not a traditional wedding dress, it is a Renaissance-style "dusty rose"-colored dress that cost me $70. With my hair being done by a friend of mine and sandals that I already own upon my feet, the wardrobe is ready. The wedding itself falls on a Wednesday. My fiancee and I are going to get married in the judge's chambers here in town. The total cost of the marriage license and the fee of the judge is less than that of a minister or rabbi, and since we both are from different religions, the justice of the peace will be the tie-breaker. The reception will be held at our apartment complex's community party room. For less than $100, we can rent a room that will fit 35 people. That was the biggest money-saver of all! As cliched as it sounds, we really are only inviting immediate family members and close friends. The guest list has been pared down to 35 people at a maximum, and most of those people are kids under the age of 5! I try to avoid talking about the wedding at work because I have several "work" friends and my budget simply cannot afford an extra 14 people! Food is another issue. The first idea I had was to have a Thanksgiving dinner, but early September in Nebraska is no time to be keeping the ovens running for several hours at a time to bake some turkeys! The next idea I had was grilled burgers and hot dogs, but then the question arose about how to safely keep them warm. Finally, the commercials sank through my thick skull and I realized that everyone likes Subway sandwiches. A great deal they offer is the party platter, which is 7 subs of any type cut into thirds. They then include all of the vegetables, sauces, etc., on the side at no extra charge. I figured that with 35 people, 1 or 2 party platters supplemented with potato salad, coleslaw, a raw vegetable platter and potato chips will feed the lot of them. For beverages, I am offering one keg of beer and soda and kool-aid for the kids; the "special helpers" (i.e. the friend who is doing my hair and another who will be helping with food) will get their own special drinks but I have told others that if they want something else they will have to bring it themselves. Finally, the total budget amount came out to be around $400. At age 24, I have the rest of my life with this man to have an expensive fairy-tale wedding but because I am only 24, I am blissfully naive enough to know that I don't need an expensive fairy-tale wedding to be happy. Fortunately I have not broken my arm. People that I know who have broken their arm say their biggest complaint is that they can't wash their good hand. So being the problem solver that I am, I found this little foot shaped foot scrubber at Wal-Mart. It has suction cups on the bottom and very soft rubbery little strips attached to the top. So we gave it a try to wash to wash one hand, and it works very well. Just dampen it, and a little squirt on soft soap or foaming soap then briskly rub your hand top and palm back to front. Run a little water to rinse it off and just leave it in the sink. It's not hard to dry one hand, but it is sure hard to wash it. By Babbie from Lemon Grove, CA Contest Contender!

I was able to successfully remove an engorged woodtick off my dog, head and all, without having to actually touch the tick. The goal is to get it to come out head and all while it is alive. The reason for this is because the tick is able to separate it's body from it's head. The head will then die while still under the skin, and possibly cause an infection in much the same way a sliver would. (We found out that the stories about the ticks head continuing to live and burrow into the body is just the myths of urban legends) I'm sure this will work even if the tick isn't full of blood yet. First, you have to squeeze the dog's skin underneath where the tick's mouth has gone into the flesh. Don't worry if you lose your grip on the skin, just continue to squeeze as if you're trying to squeeze out a big pimple. You will want to have another set of hands as I did to help you to be able to add the next step. For the next step, you have to have rubbing alcohol that's in a spray bottle. Then, where you can see the tick's mouth going into the dog's flesh, spray liberally. It doesn't matter if you get it on the ticks body as well. I just kept spraying some, then I'd wait a few seconds, then spray again. Don't worry about the alcohol killing the tick, as they are hard to kill! After about a minute, or maybe two at the most, the tick backed itself out. This is when you want to have a jar with rubbing alcohol in it to drown the tick. This will take a few hours, because, as I said before, they are hard to kill! If I ever have to repeat this experience, (I hope I don't!) I would like to try vinegar to replace the rubbing alcohol, as I think it would work just as well. This tip would probably be helpful to remove ticks on humans also. I apologize for the itching! You should see me as I submit this tip! My skin is crawling! By GarlicQueen from Rocky Mountain House, Alberta, Canada Contest Contender!

Manufacturer: Bissell I have 2 products by Bissell. The SpotBot and the Pro Heat carpet shampooer. I will never purchase another Bissell product again. The SpotBot worked fine for a while, then started spewing water all over the place. I contacted Bissell and was unable to get the least bit of help from them. Not even the name of a service center to take it to. The carpet shampooer did the same thing. But it only worked a couple of times before it messed up. And again, Bissell gave me no help whatsoever. I was able to find a good repairman, but the machine has had to go to the shop almost every time I use it. I will not have another Bissell product in my home ever again. Rate It: Theme Song for TV Movie? "Five Hundred Miles Away From Home" Recently I came across a song on an old Bobby Bare CD. The song is called Five Hundred Miles (Away from Home). I think it came from an old TV movie from when I was a kid. If memory serves, it starred Jim Brown as a prison inmate. I did look up Jim Brown on Wikipedia, but none of the movies listed there ring a bell. There is no "credit" given to a movie on the CD either. Anyone remember this movie? You guys are terrific and I really enjoy this site. By collinsmom from Absecon, NJ Post Feedback: http://www.thriftyfun.com/tf89519804.tip.html

Rate It: I'm 16 years old and around 250 pounds. I've recently realized not only the state my health is in but the state my life is in. I have very few friends and I'm very shy. I have a hard time making new friends, but not because I don't want to. I'm too embarrassed of what people will think of me. I really want to lose a lot of this weight and quickly. I would like to at least lose a considerable amount by the time school starts up in August. I can't afford to buy diet foods and I have only the space in a small shared bedroom in which to attempt to exercise. Does anyone have any suggestions? Please help. The Weekly Worries
This week we're conducting an experiment in our house. Each weekend, we reluctantly run errands that total $200 or more. It's depressing. They're not meaningless, bored shopping trips; they're planned trips for essential items. Yet, I'm not happy with the amount of money we spend, so we've make a goal not to spend anything next weekend in order to revamp our weekly spending.
