Lola (Mini Schnauzer)

Lola is 7 months old and a mini Schnauzer. I got her about 3 months ago, through a breeder.

She likes to chase Scruffy (my other dog) around and steal things from him, like they are all hers, a true Leo. They are the love of my live and could not envision life without them.

Make Your Own Picnic Blanket for Less

(Originally posted 6-30-06) I saw a picnic blanket at Walmart for $14.96. After carefully examining this blanket I have decided that it can be made for a lot less. Take a shower curtain liner (bought at DollarTree for $1) and an old but usable blanket and sew the liner to the blanket, add shoe string ties and a handle and WOW! a picnic blanket that has just cost maybe $3 total compared to the $15 at WalMart.

Use Disagreeable Shampoo for Hand Wash

I recently purchased some hair shampoo which did not agree with my hair. I ended up putting it into a used hand wash dispenser bottle. Seems to be working very good as a hand wash soap.

Helping Little Ones Find Their Computer Games

My kids have lots of games on the computer, but my youngest has tendency to forget where the games are located, and which game is which. So, I came up with an easy solution. I made a folder on my desktop with a picture he would recognize right away, inside the folder I put in all his games and made picture icons for them with clips from the game itself. So, now he can get on the computer and load his own games because he now knows that the fish is for his fishing game, the truck for his construction game, etc.

Water Outdoor Plants While on Vacation

To water outside plants while on vacation, simply bury a piece of yarn beside of plant and run the other end of yarn into a bucket of water. Presto! The plants will absorb water as needed. Happy gardening!

Keeping Your Just Picked Strawberries

Strawberry picking is arriving. To keep them fresh, store them in a cool dry place. Make sure you wash them in cold water. Then blot dry with paper towels. If you want to freeze them hull them, wash them and blot them dry. Put a single layer in a parchment lined pan. Freeze them for one hour then put them in ziploc bags.

Dear Webby's Joke of the Day

The young couple invited their elderly pastor for Sunday dinner. While they were in the kitchen preparing the meal, the minister asked their son what they were having.

'Goat,' the little boy replied.

'Goat?' replied the startled man of the cloth, 'Are you sure about that?'

'Yep,' said the youngster. 'I heard Dad say to Mom, 'Today is just as good as any to have the old goat for dinner.'

Eyeglasses Anti-Fog Liquid Left Residue

I made the mistake of using an anti fog liquid on my new eyeglasses about 6 months ago. Ever since, they are constantly streaky and filmy. I've used almost everything to remove the film that the fog product put on the lenses but to no avail. Does anyone have a remedy for removing this type of product from plastic lenses?

Making Curtains Using Towels And Clothespins

We are moving from a trailer to a house and I need help! I want to make curtains. I am very crafty, but the last time I used a sewing machine I attached 2 of my fingernails to the shirt I was sewing. I am not needle friendly. I saw a picture a while back of towels clothespins for the curtain hooks. I love it for my laundry room. But how do I do them so they don't fall every time you brush passed them. I would really appreciate the advice. THANKS!

Getting Back Into Nursing Job After a Long Absence

I am an RN in Illinois with a current license. My problem is that I have not worked in the past 9 years. I did speak with 3 nurse recruiters at local hospitals and they all recommended I take a refresher course. None of them could tell me of any so I had to research myself. I found 2 online but you have to arrange your clinical rotation yourself. The other one isn't exactly local and these cost between $1000-2000! I don't have that kind of money.

There have to be nurses out there who have also been out for a number of years and didn't take refresher courses. I just need someone to be willing to train me. What am I doing wrong? The underlying message I'm getting is that even though there is a shortage of nurses, a new graduate is more valuable than I am. Help!

Buying A House With One Income

I'm 32 years old, recently divorced and have moved back in with my parents. I currently make close to $41,000 a year. I can't seem to buy a house with only one income. I'm not looking for an expensive house, $79,000. I was wondering does anyone know how I could reach my goal. I have also saved money but if you make $2000 a month, pay school loan, car loan and insurance (close to $800 a month) the house mortgage (close to $900) that leave only $240 left at the end of month. Please help me.

Looking For A Laminate Alternative

I am appalled at the price of laminate. The piece I want and only need 4 feet of, I have to pay the 8 foot price! I bought a beautiful china hutch, I am taking the top off for the bathroom vanity. Now my question is, since the prices are so high, what about just polyresining the heck out of the top of the vanity? Would this work and last? Thanks in advance for any help.

Paint Not Sticking To Particle Board Cabinets

I painted the sides of our island, over the laminate/particle board that is made to look like the cabinets. First I tried sanding it and painting and it would not work, the paint wasn't holding in some places. Then I tried liquid sander. That seemed to work, but some spots of paint are still wiping right off. Is there any hope to fix this? I put more liquid sander on and painted over it again but I don't know what else to do. I looks great, but I'm afraid one scuff of a shoe is going to take the paint right off. Thanks!

Root Beer Popsicles

(Originally published 5-23-2003)The unofficial kick off of summer - Memorial Day - will be here soon. Besides taking some time to remember all those who gave their lives in the cause of keeping our country free - which we all should do - Memorial Day calls for a picnic or backyard barbeque. In addition to the tasty line-up you'd normally provide, how about adding some extra taste excitement in the form of - root beer? Besides providing frosty mugs of this good stuff you can treat the kids (and maybe some adults, too) to one (or both) of these goodies:

Plant A Row For The Hungry
By Ellen Brown

In 1995, the Garden Writers Association started a public service campaign called Plant a Row for the Hungry. The program's goal was to help stamp out hunger by establishing networks of gardeners in communities across the U.S. and Canada that were willing to grow a row for the hungry to donate to local food programs. Here is how you can be among the thousands of gardeners who are helping to feed the hungry each year by giving away a row of what you grow.
