Juliet (Yorkshire Terrier)

Juliet is a Yorkshire Terrier and just turned 6 years old. We got her through a private breeder in New Jersey.

She likes to hang out with us where ever we are. She is my very best friend and loves so unconditionally whether I am in a good mood or a bad mood! She can make you smile even on your worst day.

Today's Tips

Acetone as a Gasoline Additive

2 ozs. of Acetone to 10 gallons or more of gasoline or diesel gives you better fuel mileage and more horsepower. Acetone can be found in the paint department of most stores. (Can be used ONLY with Premium fuel.)

By Terri from NV

Editor's Note: This is a fairly common tip so we wanted to publish it but a reader quickly pointed out that the folks at Car Talk strongly recommend NOT doing this and provide numerous potential hazards to consider. Before considering adding acetone as a fuel additive be sure to read the link below:

Tea Bags for Infected Sores

If there is an opening or scab on the infected area this will work. The tea bag must have contact with the opening or scab. Use a regular black tea, tea bag to make tea as you wish. When tea bag is cool squeeze some of the tea out. Then tape the tea bag to the infected area of body. Leave on for 12 hours. Remove. You will see much of the redness gone from the infected area and puss will be on the tea bag. Use a new bag and epeat till infection is gone.

I have used this many times to get rid of infections instead of going to a Dr. and getting antibiotics. Try it, you will be amazed at how well it works.

It usually only takes one or two applications.

Scuffs on Linoleum Floors

Use Brillo pads to get rid of scuff marks on linoleum floor. Always works for me. Make sure you are gentle with it. You don't want to scratch your floor. Then clean up the area with soap and water with a paper towel. Do immediately, I wouldn't know if the Blue from the Brillo stains or not. It never has with me.

A Better Cheeseburger

When cooking hamburgers from scratch put a thin slice of cheese/onion/etc in the middle of the burger instead of putting it on top and watch it cook. I think this is the best way to eat a cheeseburger.

Remedy for Pets Dry Skin

My recipe is for pets that have dry skin and itch a lot. In a spray bottle (I got at walmart in beauty supplies) add 1/3 cup of baby oil, 1/3 cup of original listerine and 1/3 cup of warm water. Shake the bottle to mix and spray on pet. Works well especially on dogs with dandruff and real dry skin. Rub it in. The
pets fur will not be oily but sure makes him feel better. It is really good for dogs that get hot spots. Always shake mixture before spraying pet.

Two Newspapers for Extra Savings

Buy two Sunday Newspapers, so that you receive doubles of the same coupons. When there are sales for "Buy One Get One Free" items. Most of the time, you can use two coupons. That is, if the coupon is for one item - As opposed to "Save .30 on two".

Example:
"Buy One Softsoap Body Wash, Get one free". Coupon - "Save two dollars on One Soft Soap Body Wash.

Use both coupons, since two items are being purchased. Result: Saving $4.00 on 2 Soft Soap Body Washes. Most of the time, it ends up being free.

Combating Junk Mail

I get so disgusted with all the junk mail I get in the mail I have start taking my name off it all put it back in the envelopes they give you postage paid and mail it all right back to them, let them pay for the postage and save space in my trash can. Maybe they will stop all these random mailings to get you to buy something.

Opening Jars with Arthritic Hands

I have arthritis in my hands and it is hard to open some jar lids. So I cut a square of rubber shelf lining to use on the lid . If it is stubborn, I put the jar under hot running water for just a few seconds, dry the lid and it works for me.

Growing Recommendations for Zone 5b

Thank you! I am constantly wondering what "zone" I am in. With your request came Hardiness Zone and a drop down menu and voilà, Columbia, MO (10 minutes from here) was actually on list.

I would like to know what trees, plants and flowers would do best here (Zone 5b). We have a new home and need trees, plants and flowers that I can take care of. I do well with tulips, daffodils, crocus and the summer salvia types. Thank you for your help.

Pest Control With Horticultural Oil

We bought a house several years ago with a huge, full-grown elm tree in the yard. It has aphids, I believe (little hard bumps on the leaves). We have heard of using a ring of Horticultural Oil around the tree, but need more informoation. How far up the tree? How wide a swath? How often? What time of year? Does anyone have a little more information for us?

Thank you,

Dealing With Ant Hills

We are starting to have an ant problem again this year. I am looking for something that will get rid for them, maybe something that can be made from items in the kitchen. There seems to be thousands of tiny ones in each hill. We do have animals and don't want anything that will be harmful to them.

Tire Rubber Smell on Clothing

My husband builds tires for a living and getting the sweat and rubber smell out of his clothes is a nightmare. I have used tide, borax, washing soda, vinegar, baking soda... the only thing I have found to help a little, is an entire cup of arm & hammer detergent washed on the hottest setting, and sometimes this takes a couple of washings. Surely there has to be a better way of getting the smells out?

Wedding Flower Advice

My daughter is getting married in May, her colors are apple red and silver with a heart theme. She likes the orange-reddish colored flowers. I am very crafty and plan to do the decorating and making the flower arrangements but I do not want her wedding to look too much like Valentine's or fall. Any ideas on flowers, or centerpiece ideas? We want it to be simple but elegant on a very limited budget!

Humming Sound Coming From Wall Socket

I'm hoping someone will know how to fix the problem I'm having. When I plugged a lamp into a wall socket last night, I heard a deep humming sound - and quickly unplugged it. I then tried the light in other sockets I know were okay, and there was no problem. Could the problem be a short in the socket? Is it dangerous until I can have someone fix it? Thanks so much.

Recommended RV Books

My husband and I are interested in becoming full time RVers when he retires in about 4 years. Does anyone have any books on the subject they could recommend? I am trying to watch costs so hate to buy new books only to find out I don't need that information. Outdated books are fine as they give me a start to look for other sources.
