A Ring for Valentine's Day

Make a ring for your Valentine. You need rocaille beads that are the size of a seed bead and some beading wire. Measure off about two feet of wire. Slip on four beads. Now run the one end of the wire through the last two beads on the other end of the wire. Draw up firmly to make two rows of two beads each. Add two beads, run the other end of the wire through those from the opposite direction and draw up firmly to make a third row. Repeat until you have a ring that is the right size. This may sound confusing at first, but try it. I learned to do it in second grade. By Coreen

Today's Tips

Keep Your Coupons in the Car

Always leave your clipped coupons in the car. This way you will always have them on hand when you need them, not at home.

Earning Extra Money With Consignment Stores

When sorting through your extra stuff you no longer need so you can donate it to "charity" or the "thrift" store, how about first dropping it off at a "Consignment Store"? You can make a little extra money. You might be pleasantly surprised how much "extra money" you can make on unwanted items.

When leaving things at a "consignment store" for the first time or two, tell them you want anything not put out on the floor back. They give you that right away. It lets you "see" exactly what kind of stuff that store likes. Unless asked, they usually send all the unwanted stuff on to charity.

If you take stuff to "consignment stores" and they do not put it all out, request all your stuff not placed. Then walk around the corner to the next "consignment store' and leave it. What one store won't sell another might and you have nothing to lose but "unsaleable" stuff that you don't want anyway.

Once a Week Cooking

No "leftovers" at our house! We prefer to call them pre-planned meals. We buy meats on sale and I usually spend a Sunday evening cooking (i.e. in one "cooking spell" I made three meat loaves, two meals of barbecued spare ribs and five meals of baked chicken. These are all proportioned to what my husband and I will eat at one meal and then sealed in our food saver bags.

Off to the freezer they go for whatever meal we want. For a working gal it sure saves time preparing dinner. Just snip the corner of the food saver bag and pop into the microwave. Open a can or two of veggies or make a fresh salad and you have a quick and delicious meal real quick!

Using Coupons

My husband and I look forward to using coupons when shopping. I spend a little time each week to sort through all the coupons from the sale papers and the ones you can find throughout some stores. We do not buy something just because we have a coupon, only the items we normally would buy anyway.

The coupons we don't/won't use are passed on to family members who will. But wait! When we get home from shopping we check our receipts to see the total savings and then put that amount in our savings jar! Just another way to SEE the savings and actually get to use it on something special later!

Grocery Receipt Coupons

My grocery store (Safeway) offers a strip of coupons with the register receipt. Sometimes the cashiers forget to give the coupons to customers so the strips can get pretty long. I make sure to ask for mine when I pay, and sometimes on my way out I will see if the other registers have coupons that haven't been given out. Every time I ask, the cashier will give them to me.

The coupons are usually valuable, like $2 off next grocery purchase or free merchandise. Today at the store I ended up with 3 free products and $6 off my purchase, all from these coupons.

Removing Rust Stains from Smooth Surfaces

To remove rust stains from smooth surfaces, mix 1/4 c baking soda with 1 qt water. Apply with damp rag, let dry then wipe with a dry soft cloth. Usually works first time.

Using Baskets for Clutter

I buy baskets from thrift stores and I use them to put my craft things or just stuff that I have lying around. That way my clutter looks neater and when I want to look for something, it is in the basket and not all over the place.

Drying Small Loads

If you think drying smaller loads in the dryer is thrifty, think again. The tumbling effect is reduced, thus prolonging the drying period. If you must dry only a small load, add a few clean, dry towels to improve the process.

Freshening Pillows

A quick way to freshen pillows is to tumble dry them on low heat for 10 minutes. This removes dust and dander so your pillows stay non-allergenic.

To line-dry down pillows, hang them by one corner and put them in the shade, not in the sun. If you use a dryer then toss in a couple of tennis balls to fluff them.

Eliminating Musty Smells From a Room

Tips and ideas for eliminating musty smells. Post your ideas.

Musty Basement Odor

A quick solution to a musty basement is to cut an onion in half and leave it on a plate down there. No, your basement won't smell like a sandwich shop. The onion actually absorbs musty odors.

Uses for Empty Babywipe Containers

Here are some ideas for reusing babywipe containers. Post your ideas below!

Uses For Baby Wipe Containers

Take lid off, use container for small toys, books, crayons, puzzle and game pieces, sewing stuff-scissors, needles and thread, washing the baby down quickly, or for cleaning water for small job, storing extras in the bathroom-toothpaste, bars of soap or for storing lids to containers. I uses these containers everywhere. It saves a lot of money rather than buying containers. If you want to stack--leave lid on. You can also label or decorate outside.

Organized Christmas Cards List

First label a piece of paper with Christmas and the year, list people you are sending cards to. When received cards come in put check by their name on your list. This way you can see who you sent and received cards from. You can add new names later. Save list for next year by stapling it to the month of November on your calendar. When November comes you will be ready to write out and send your cards. Then start a new list with the cards you write out to save for the next year. You can also do this with e-cards.

Turn the Collar for a New-Looking Shirt

Betty's tip about cutting her husband's frayed cuffs off and making long sleeves into short reminds me of how I have extended the life of some of my husband's nicer shirts that have frayed collars.

Use a seam ripper to open the seam the collar is sandwiched between. Then pull out the collar and flip it over to the opposite side (which will look brand new); then set it in the opened collar seam, match the thread as well as you can, and stitch the seam back up. The frayed side will be turned down now and hidden, and your favorite shirt can be used a lot longer!

Making Crafts With Leaves and Flowers

Craft ideas using dried leaves and flowers. Post your ideas.

Saving Leaves and Flowers

When dead heading your plants, don't let the pretty leaves and flowers go to waste. Press them in a phone book or in a heavy book.

Use them to embellish tags or cards or my favorite is to put them in an IKEA frame and hang them up. Makes a unique picture.

Uses for Plastic Coffee Containers

The small plastic containers that contain coffee (approx. 13 ounce size) are great for painting. They are small enough to handle easily and have a cap to cover any paint left if you have to stop painting for awhile.

Cleaning Soot From Gas Stove Off Dishes

Soot from my gas stove has gotten all over my skillet. I've never had this problem before in the two years I've had a gas stove. When I put the pan in the dishwasher, the soot got all over the dishes. After running them through a second time, the soot is still there. How do I get it off - and how do I keep this from happening again? I've always had an electric stove before.
