Request: Paint Color Ideas for Kitchen Cabinets
Archived on 11/08/2009
We would like to paint our kitchen cabinets and also put a back splash on the wall under the cabinets in our kitchen. As you can see, the countertops are a "reddish" color and we will not be changing this. The kitchen is open to the dining and living room.
They are painted with Home Depot's Behr Creme Brulee, a cream kind of color that has a yellowish tint. The trim is a bright white. The ceiling is pine tongue-and-groove and it is post and beam so is somewhat dark.
My question is, does anyone have any suggestions for what I should paint my cabinets that would be bright, but not white because we have a two year old and don't want everything to show? Also what could I do for the backs plash color? Thanks.

I could see your cabinets in tan/taupe/sand color and maybe a back splash of yellow (either light or bright). (07/02/2009)

I know you wanted a bright color, but how about something like Colonial or Steel blue with a copper backsplash. (07/05/2009)

I think a rich French Vanilla color would be beautiful for your cabinets, and with a little one would not show dirty little hands. If you use a paint that can just be wiped clean. A nice enamel paint would work. It would look lovely and very rich with the reddish counter tops. French Vanilla would also blend nicely with the Creme Brulee. I see from the photo that you have a hanging rack overhead for your stainless steel pots.
I think a stainless steel back splash would be beautiful with the French Vanilla cabinet color and also give a very clean line and look. Then you could go with a brushed stainless steel, nickel or pewter pulls for the cabinet doors to bring this look together. If the stainless steel sheets are too expensive, you might opt for a galvanized metal sheeting and polish it up. Then, down the road, when money allowed, you could perhaps incorporate stainless steel appliances. This would, in my opinion, be very pretty and easy to keep clean, too. I wish you well. Happy decorating. (07/05/2009)

Cupboards: Grey, medium shade
Backsplash: black Subway tiles with a "brick pattern layout" and black grout. If your budget is small, washable/vinyl wall paper that incorporates the colours you have chosen, will give you 2 to 3 years of wear and washing, and not cost a whole lot.
If you're going to replace your cupboard hardware, brushed nickle finish looks really sharp. Stay away from brass, copper, or any antique finishes.

Think of a soft yellow on the cabinets and leave the back splash as it is (white). This will cause the room to not only be brighter, but larger feeling. The darker the color that you use the smaller the room will seem to be. Trust me, I learned the hard way. Use pencil thin black hardware for your drawer pulls and pencil thin black cabinet knobs or handles on drawers.
Again I learned the hard way by putting large cast iron looking heavy handles, knobs and drawer pulls which ended up being way too heavy looking in my small kitchen; it actually made the room seem much smaller then it was to begin with if that makes sense.
Your kitchen colors would resemble those found in "Black Eyed Susan" flowers. Lets us know what you end up doing. (07/05/2009)

Are you really sure you want to paint the cabinets? I think they look great in white. I find that using microfiber cloths to wipe off things my kids touch is easy. You don't even have to use any cleaner, just wet the cloth and they work very well. I have a lot of white walls in my house so am pretty good about wiping off those dirty "paw" prints.
Honestly, your kitchen looks great just the way it is. (07/08/2009)

I also like cream for the cabinets and perhaps bringing in a rust, copper, or sage backsplash. Here's more on painting cabinets:

We would like to paint our oak kitchen cabinets. I've read quite a bit here about the primer to use. Thank you all for your tips! I am now wondering if there is a particular brand of paint that is especially kitchen-cabinet-friendly?

Latex formulas specified for cabinetry, labeled "100% acrylic". It will create an even, durable finish. (10/28/2008)

Previous response is excellent paint choice. If I may add this tip; use a small high density sponge roll to apply all coats of paint. It makes a remarkably good finish to the paint. Good luck. (10/30/2008)

We used semi-gloss Rustoleum spray paint. Beautiful finish, durable, and many color choices. They looked like the painted ones in the showroom. We removed the doors to lay them flat. Very light coats and no drips. (10/30/2008)
