Today's Tips

Gas Saving Tips

Weather permitting, turn off the air conditioning and travel with the windows opened. You'll burn less gas. Also, fuel economy is higher if you fill up before your gauge reads below 1/4. Under inflated tires waste gas also, so check your tire pressure regularly, before you set out. Once you've driven a very few miles, accuracy is compromised. Whenever possible, car pool. When you have several chores, try to align them in the shortest, most direct route. : ) By Doggy

Add Vodka to Your Shampoo

Add a jigger of vodka to a 12-ounce bottle of shampoo. The alcohol cleanses the scalp, removes toxins from hair, and stimulates the growth of healthy hair. By Debbie Cummings

Use Old Panty Hose to Tie Up Plants

Take old panty hose, each leg cut into a band then snipped open make the best ties to tie up plants to stakes or trellis'. They are stretchy, easy to tie, strong and soft enough not to damage or cut into plant stems. And they're a way to get a little more value out of worn hose. By Linda

Save on Prescriptions: Ask Your Doctor for Samples

To help you save money on your prescriptions while your at your doctors office ask the doctor if he has samples of the medication you need. Almost all doctors have tons of samples given to them by drug suppliers. If they do not have any samples often they have coupons for the medication.

My doctor gives me 3 months supply of my blood pressure medication every time I see him. This has saved me hundreds of dollars. Often if my doctor does not have any samples on hand he will call the drug representative and request they send samples, within a few days I can pick up the samples.

It is well worth it for you to talk to your doctor about getting samples. These samples do not cost the doctors anything, they are to help patients who have limited budgets.

Storing Camping Coolers

Before storing your coolers between camping trips, wash, dry completely and fill with crumpled newspapers. This will eliminate musty odors and mildew. It also works for your camper refrigerators and iceboxes. By Harlean from Arkansas

Picking Dewberries

If you have ever went out to pick dewberries you know how hard they are to get without getting stuck with all the little prickly vines they grow on. Will finally I have came up with the best idea how to get around this problem... A "long" pair of bbq tongs. And if you are trying to get them through a fence this works great as they won't fall out of the tongs either. Just wanted to share. By Jodi

Dying Clothing with Tea

I needed a tan Bolero Jacket to wear over a dress. I didn't have any extra money to buy one, so I had a white one that I very seldom wore. I took an 8 qt. stainless steel pot, put in 10 iced-tea sized tea bags and water, then let it boil. When it was done boiling, I saturated my white bolero in cold water. I then put it in the tea water and let it boil for about 15 minutes. After 15 min., I took it out and threw it in the washer on the rinse cycle with 1/2 cup of salt to set the dye. It came out beautifully. It was tan and matched my dress perfectly! I've washed it 2 or 3 times, and it's still a light tan color. By Jackie S.

Featured Feedback: Soup Recipes and Freezing Information

If you are in a hurry, or don't have soup frozen ahead of time, a quick and easy homemade soup is to fill a pot with water, add bouillon (there are a wide variety of flavors...beef, chicken, fish, vegetable, etc.), keep a bag of frozen mixed vegetables or your favorite frozen veggies in the freezer and add desired amount to soup. Add desired spices, chopped onion, etc. Something I have found and have come to love in a pinch is celery flakes. They have saved me many times on soups and macaroni or potato salads when I ran out of celery. It gives a great flavor! You can always add pre-cooked rice, elbow macaroni, leftover spaghetti noodles, etc. for substance.

And a correction for one of yesterday's tips. The tip for making your own laundry soap should have read:

"I use Ajax, Dawn or Joy to wash my clothes. It's bunches cheaper than Tide. Mix it 7 to 1 (Water/Ajax, Dawn or Joy) in your empty laundry detergent bottle. Pour in 7 cups of water, then add 1 cup of dish detergent. I use the bottle cap to measure just like the Tide. "

Shake Up Your Soil
By Carrie P. Williams

Many of us know that our soil isn't as good as we want it to be. Some soils are extremely sandy and do not hold water at all. Other soils are mostly clay and hold water all too well. However, it can be maddeningly difficult to decipher what exactly your soil is composed of that keeps it from being your plant's dirt paradise. However, determining what type of soil that you have is not only easy, it can be very amusing. After all, for this experiment you get another chance to dig in the dirt.
