Beaded Thong Bookmarks

Beaded Bookmarks--often marketed as "Book Thongs" and sold for seven to ten dollars at bookstores, but easy to make and an excellent project to use up odd bead leftovers from other projects. These also make lovely gifts--especially if you are also giving a book!

Approximate Time 10 Minutes

Supplies:

  • 12 inches of Waxed Linen Thread, Embroidery Floss, or thin ribbon
  • Assorted beads and spacers--usually around ten pieces

Instructions:

  1. Tie a double overhand knot or square not in one end of the thread, string, or ribbon. Be sure that the knot is bigger than the hole of the bead you wish to use (see picture)
  2. Bookmark1_300x256.jpg

  3. String beads on the knot end of the thread, string, or ribbon. I usually add about an inch and a half's worth (see picture). Tie a knot at the end of the beads when the arrangement is to your liking. Again, be sure that the knot is bigger than the holes in the beads.
  4. Bookmark2_291x300.jpg

  5. If you're nervous about making sure the bookmark is long enough to span a book, do a trial run with a book. Mark with your finger the appropriate length of thread, string, or ribbon (see picture).

    bookmark3_300x204.jpg

  6. Repeat step 2 on the other end of the thread, string, or ribbon.

  7. Tie off the end so that no beads escape and you have a beaded bookmark suitable for reading or for gift giving! See the main picture for the finished product in use!

Dump Truck Birthday Cake

For my son's second birthday, we had a construction zone theme. We put a new toy plastic dumptruck on the table to fill with chips (until my son wanted to play with it!), the invitations were made with hard-hat die cuts, and the cake was a truck with donut wheels. It was made from two loaf pans and a half-sheet cake which were cut to shape, stacked and frosted. For a little extra height due to the size of the donuts, there are also two waffles in the white section under the truck body, and an extra piece of cardboard under the back to support the truck bed where it goes out over the back wheels. The wheels are held in place with toothpicks.

Double Delight Tea Roses

My Double Delight Tea Rose is such a garden decorating dream; its fragrance surpasses the fragrance of an expensive perfume and the beauty to look at the bud and blossom of this Delight can not be described but must be seen by the human eye.

It is a joy for me to sit on my backyard deck and view this magnificent rose and the fragrance permeates the air after a rain.

I am photographing the stages of this flower and will frame the 4 x 6 photos in my home for my family and guests to enjoy the delight of these blossoms.

Artemis (Long Hair Tortoise Shell)

Artemis is one year old and is a long-haired tortoiseshell cat.

Artemis came from the animal control shelter about a year ago when she was a two-pound kitten crying her head off and hanging on the bars of her cage.

She has a piece of baling wire that she loves to bat around. She also likes to chase the rainbows created by my window prisms.

She's named after the Greek goddess of the hunt. Yes, it's dorky. I'm a literature teacher.

Today's Tips:

Use A Band Aid For Straight Seams

This tip is for all sewers! I'm 65 and I learned this from my mother when I was about ten or twelve. Many times it is hard to sew a straight seam because your machine's markings aren't clear or easy to see. I use an ordinary band-aid along the seam width I need. First, I fold back a small amount of the tape to make it easy to remove. Next I place the band-aid along the seam allowance starting quite a ways before the machines markings. This helps to align the fabric before it reaches the presser foot. Try it. You'll like it!

A Wife's Duties (A Joke)

Three men were sitting together bragging about how they had given their new wives duties.

The first man had married a woman from Iowa and had told her that she was going to do dishes and house cleaning. It took a couple days, but on the third day, he came home to a clean house and dishes washed and put away.

The second man had married a woman from Illinois. He had given his wife orders that she was to do all the cleaning, dishes, and the cooking. The first day he didn't see any results, but the next day, he saw it was better. By the third day, he saw his house was clean, the dishes were done, and there was a huge dinner on the table.

The third man had married a girl from Oregon. He told her that her duties were to keep the house cleaned, dishes washed, lawn mowed, laundry washed and hot meals on the table for every meal. He said the first day he didn't see anything, and the second day he didn't see anything, but by the third day some of the swelling had gone down and he could see a little out of his left eye, enough to fix himself a bite to eat and load the dishwasher.

Use A Daily Planner For Organizing

I know people who are pretty scattered in their thinking and life. I suggest to them to get a daily planner. You can make your own. Just get a notebook and each page is a day. Put in at least 30 days. Start with today, put down every thing you have to do today. Also put down duties for tomorrow and the next day. And so on. Put down your appointments for that whole month. In the mornings, plan what to do that day. When you accomplish that job, scratch it off. Then do the next thing on your list. When accomplished, scratch that off your list. It will give you a sense of accomplishment and also keep your life more organized. When new things come up, add them to the appropriate day. So all you have to remember in the morning is to take your book with you wherever you go, instead of trying to remember all the things in your head making your life a turmoil and confusing.

Don't Take No For An Answer

Just today I had another reminder of how true it is not to take no for an answer! I was on the phone, trying to get a credit card refund for an item I HAD returned, and at first the customer service person on the line said, "No." Now I KNEW I had returned it, so I asked to talk to a supervisor, and when I did, I got my refund NO PROBLEM!

So in these matters, remember to persevere. Often the customer service lines and other first lines of contact are there to be a barrier as much as a resource! So be persistent for better results.

Buy And Use Miscellaneous Craft Scraps

One woman's remnant, is another woman's reward. Every single garage sale/estate sale, I have ever been to has had at least one bag of miscellaneous sewing notions: buttons, lace, beads, and threads for cheap. Or I've seen them tossed curbside after not selling them in their brief sale.

This is what I do as I look through it at home:

Over the years I have accumulated so many bargain or "found" all-occasion cards so that I have a bundle. The newer ones in stores are clever, have special ornamentation added to the outside, along with a few dollar increase in price. I spend a little time in the card sections of stores a few times a year, learning what/how they've made the old styles special.

Like a scrapbook page, I spend a few rare free hours enjoying the goodie bag or old jewelry box or tiny brown paper sack of bits and pieces of metallic cording, soutache trim, suede leather remnants, one-of-a-kind trims, left over from someone else's imagination/projects. I then come up with a lot of interesting ideas for improving the most boring out-of-date cards I have, starting with the oldest stack first. I do only a few at a time, in only a few categories.

If I have a card with nothing but a tall pines photo, I use the tiny leather strips for embellishing the bark, and use tiny pressed fern leaves, pre-sprayed with hair-spray, which I've pressed/saved in a phone directory, for three-dimensional leaves on the closest trees. Glue any old unused spices make up "woodsy" ground covering, (with a mini-trimmed feather) and even a tiny paper kite cut-out from a magazine illustration, thickened by glue, attached to a piece of tiny cording, "caught up" in the tree top. A single tiny layer of trimmed thin poly cotton from an old medicine bottle packaging, overlapping one of the highest branches for a cloud-covering adds curious mystique and brings back childhood memories to the recipient.

I'm careful not to make any of the embellished cards too thick for their envelopes, otherwise I must use one of the several odd larger spare card envelopes that I've accumulated from making a mistake from poor writing or messiness inside the original card that I had to toss. See, I just save and recycle as much as I can and truly enjoy doing it, for free, except for the glues, during the few odd times I have breaks, rare as those times are. Being crafty in the past does help, even as one ages. I'm planning to take some of the supplies to my mother in the Assisted Living home on a covered tray, so she might enjoy helping me "craft" to give her something to do.

This is very challenging, stimulates the imagination like working with miniatures, and doll furniture and houses, but can be enjoyed by men and boys as well, if they use the more masculine cards, various sorts of pipecleaners, wires, strings, ropes, denims and more rugged trims, even tiny things from the gumball machines, patches, plaid ribbon for neckties, ideas on men's cards: all good rainy day crafts to work along with other crafters in the home.

Once it's all complete, I add my special applicable pre-printed Holy Scripture to the inside cover, for encouragement or comfort, whatever the need may be, because I live my faith in real life.

I also save unblemished, clean cellophane flat bags from individually wrapped PopTarts, and waffles, (when I can afford them) throughout the year, so that I can use them to "final wrap" embellished cards for easier insertion into their envelopes.

Although I can never purchase gifts as I have so often over the years for folks, I find a heart is softened and moved when I take the time to make them this special sort of card. Sometimes they are more attractive than storebought.

Give Kids A Wet Washcloth At Bedtime

When my kids were little and we didn't have air conditioning, I would give them a cold, wet washcloth at night when they went to bed. They would put it on their foreheads. I don't know if it really cooled them down, or just distracted them, but they it did help them get to sleep on hot summer nights.

Chemicals In Household Products

Recently I have learned about the vast amount of harmful chemicals in make up, skin care, hair care, and bath and body products. In the past, I have spent very little money on these products by buying them at Wal-mart. Now that I have educated myself on some of the ingredients, I am switching brands or making some of my own products. Check products that you use for your family at:

This site not only rates the hazard level of products like toothpaste, deodorant, make up, baby care products, etc, but explains what ingredients are in the product and why it rates the way it does.

What Should I Do With My 401K After Losing My Job?

Unfortunately I will be losing my job on Sept 14th. I will be 7 months pregnant at that time and my severance pay will hopefully carry us through on bills until the end of the year. However, my company has a 401k plan that I have never contributed to but they apparently have been putting money in it for me for the six years I have been here. I am 100% vested and the acct has about $2900.00 in it. What should I do with it?

It doesn't seem to be enough money to roll over into anything and I have no accounts anywhere to roll it over into. If I cash it in do they automatically take out the 10% penalty and 20% for taxes or just the penalty? Even if I got $2000.00 of it, it would go a long way to help us out financially until I recover from a third c-section, enough to look for another job. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Squirrels Chewing Through Window Screens

How do I keep squirrels from chewing through my window screens?

We just came home to discover large pieces of bread and baked goods all over the kitchen counter, along the windows above the sink. Thinking that we had just become house mates with super-rat, I summonsed my DH to find it while I packed.

Closer investigtion (by him) revealed a tear in the screen, pushed outward, as in exit. Apparently Einstein Squirrel climbed onto my new window box and chewed his way in and out through the screen. I was somewhat relieved to find a large piece of bread outside, on top of the fence a few feet away.

We just moved here and have lots of squirrels. I love leaving my windows open, which is something we couldn't do in our previous home for safety reasons. Now this! Is this normal? OMG!

Old Fashioned Soda Fountain Treats (Part 3 - Sundaes)

Well, here we are with part three of our "walk down Memory Lane". I sure hope you enjoy these recipes as much as I did. The basic construction of a sundae is ice cream in the bottom with a topping and garnishes on top.

Sundaes

  • Hot Fudge Sundae: Vanilla ice cream, hot fudge whipped cream, 1 large maraschino cherry, chopped nuts (optional). Arrange in a sundae dish and eat.
  • Strawberry Sundae (Red and White): 1 scoop of vanilla Ice cream, strawberry ice cream topping, a few slices of strawberry for garnish.
  • Double Strawberry Sundae (Red All Over): 1 scoop strawberry ice cream, strawberry topping slices of strawberry for garnish.
  • Pineapple Sundae (Sunshine): 1 scoop of vanilla ice cream, pineapple topping, and crushed pineapple and orange slices for garnish.
  • CMP (Chocolate, Marshmallow, and And Peanuts): This sundae is made by topping vanilla ice cream with both chocolate and marshmallow sauces. Finish with chopped peanuts and serve.
  • Tin Roof Sundae: Assemble in a sundae dish, vanilla ice cream and top with chocolate sauce. Sprinkle with whole red skinned Spanish peanuts, holding the whipped cream.
  • Chop Suey Sundae: 1/4 cup sugar, 1/4 cup water, 1/4 cup raisins, 1/4 cup dates, 2 scoops vanilla ice cream, 1/4 cup flaked coconut, 1/4 cup chow mein noodles. Boil the water and sugar together for 5 minutes and then add the raisins and dates. Pour over the ice cream and top with the noodles.
  • Dionne Surprise (Quints born in the 1930's): 5 scoops vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, 5 Maraschino cherries, 1/4 cup crushed pineapple, 1/4 cup crushed strawberries. Line up the scoops in a banana split dish. Top each scoop with a dollop of whipped cream and a cherry. Place the crushed pineapple along one side of the dish and the crushed strawberries along the opposite side of the dish.
  • The All-American Sundae: 1/4 cup marshmallow syrup, 2 scoops vanilla ice cream, 2 Tbsp. crushed Maraschino cherries, 2 Tbsp. blueberries. Pour half of the marshmallow syrup into the bottom of a tulip glass and add the ice cream. Top with the rest of the marshmallow syrup and place the cherries on one side of the glass and the blueberries on the opposite side, leaving a white stripe down the middle.
  • Washington Monument Sundae: 1/4 cup chocolate syrup, 6 scoops of different flavored ice creams, 1/4 cup raspberry syrup, 1 large banana (cut into disks), 1/4 cup nuts, 1 large banana (cut in half across it's width), whipped cream, candy sprinkles (red and blue), Maraschino cherries, 5 small American flags. Into your tallest glass, place a tablespoon of chocolate syrup and add a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Add 1 tablespoon of raspberry syrup and a few banana disks. Continue to add in the above order, the layers of ice cream, bananas, syrups, and nuts. When finished layering the ice cream, top with the halved banana in a mound of whipped cream. Sprinkle with the candies and put the cherries around the outside rim of the glass. Top with the American flags.
  • The Bee Hive: Place 1/2 oz of pure honey in the bottom of a sundae glass. Add 2 dippers vanilla ice cream and then drizzle 1 oz of pure honey over the top. Sprinkle with chopped roasted salted almonds and garnish with whipped cream and a cherry.
  • The Chocolate Rice Crispy: Place 1/2 of Chocolate topping in the bottom of a sundae glass, add 2 dippers of vanilla ice cream, and cover with 1 oz of chocolate topping and a good portion of Rice Kris pies. Garnish with whipped cream and a cherry.
  • Carnival Sundae: Vanilla ice cream, caramel sauce, warm popcorn, freshly popped Spanish peanuts. Place ice cream in a bowl. Top with warm caramel sauce. Sprinkle with popcorn and peanuts.
  • Cat on a Hot Tin Roof: Vanilla ice cream, hot fudge sauce, whipped cream, Spanish peanuts, Maraschino cherries.
  • Hot Fudge Cake Sundae: Brownies (warm), vanilla ice cream, hot fudge sauce, whipped cream, Spanish peanuts, Maraschino cherries. Place brownie on a dessert plate. Top with a little hot fudge then 1 scoop of ice cream. Finish with more hot fudge, be sure it drizzles down the sides. Spoon on whipped cream, sprinkle with nuts and top with cherry.
  • Pure Ecstasy Sundae: Chocolate ice cream, hot fudge sauce, gourmet quality chocolate bar, coarsely chopped toasted almonds, whipped cream.
  • Cinnamon Surprise Sundae: Coffee ice cream, hot fudge sauce, chopped chocolate and almonds. Top with whipped cream and a sprinkle of cinnamon.
  • Strawberry Shortcake Sundae: Shortcake strawberry ice cream, strawberry preserves, whipped cream, whole strawberries for garnish.
  • Cherry Cheesecake Sundae: 1 cup cherry pie filling, 2 teaspoons almond extract (divided), 3 ounces cream cheese (softened), 1/4 cup powdered sugar, 1 tablespoon milk, vanilla ice cream. In a small bowl, combine pie filling and 1 tsp. extract; set aside. In a small mixing bowl, beat cream cheese, sugar, milk and remaining extract. Spoon ice cream into dessert dishes; top with cream cheese and cherry mixtures.
  • S'more Sundae: Rocky Road ice cream topped hot fudge sauce, mini-marshmallows, whipped cream and graham cracker crumbs.
  • Leaning Tower of Oreo Sundae: Using chocolate fudge swirl ice cream as cement, stack as many Oreos as you can. Drizzle minty fudge sauce over the top and finish with whipped cream and a homemade Italian flag.
  • Go Nuts Sundae: Peanut butter cup ice cream is topped with hot fudge, broken-up peanut butter cups, peanut brittle and a garnish of whipped cream, grated chocolate and a cherry.
  • Colorado Avalanche: One scoop of eight different ice creams topped with nuts, hot fudge, strawberry topping, caramel topping, chopped Oreos, cherries and chopped Milky Ways. Top with whipped cream.
  • The Brownie Trooper: Fudge brownie topped with chocolate chip ice cream, minty fudge sauce, mint-flavored whipped cream, mixed nuts and a cherry.
  • Mount St. Helens: Vanilla ice cream hot fudge, malted milk powder, whipped cream, and, if you can take the heat, a sprinkle of red hots.

Now for our grand finale

  • The All American Banana Split: One banana cut in half, one scoop each of vanilla, chocolate and strawberry Ice cream laid down the center of the split banana, topped with chocolate sauce on the strawberry ice cream, pineapple sauce on the vanilla ice cream, caramel sauce on the chocolate ice cream. Lots of whipped cream, (The canned whip cream is the best for this) and top it all off with a cherry.

Now if any of you know of different or unusual ice cream confections recipes and would like to share, please post them in the feedback section.

Saving Money on Long Distance

Tips for saving money on calling long distance. Post your ideas!

Use Your Cell Phone

I dropped my land line and only use a cell phone. It's great because I can walk around the city and feel safe, plus, anyone can get a hold of me in an emergency.

I get free nights and weekends, eliminating the need to pay for long distance. Plus, I get caller ID free on the phone. I have T-mobile service and save a ton.

Calling Cards or a Cellphone

To save money on your long distance charges you can do a couple of different things. First of all, you could buy long distance phone calling cards from stores, convenience stores, etc. They are usually cheaper per minute than using your house phone. The other option, which happens to be the one we chose, is to get a cell phone. You pay a certain amount for a certain number of minutes per month. It has been lot more economical than long distance from our home phone.

USA DataNet

USA DataNet has a website. You are only billed for the time you use. There is a maximum price per call or a small fee for very short calls. So much better than ATT which charged us every month, whether we used it or not.

By Barbara

Editor's Note: There is a website like this that I have used for a number of years called OneSuite.com. You have to dial a long number to call long distance but you can program it into your phone.

Wal-Mart Phone Card

We make a lot of long-distance phone calls from our home. My husband's family lives 4 hours from us and my son's dad lives an hour and a half. We buy the 500 minute phone cards at Wal-mart and they last forever! Plus our phone bill is so much lower!

By Alica

Take Advantage Of Free Weekends

Most cell phone plans have "free" weekend minutes. Make sure to take advantage of those minutes, too!

Call People On The Same Network

If you have a Cingular cell phone, you can call anyone else with a Cingular cell phone and it is free anytime, day or night, weekends or weekdays. If you want to call someone who doesn't have a cell phone, there is no long distance fee, and if you call at night or on weekends, the calls are free. The only reason we still have a phone line into our house is for our Internet service. We are in an area where there is no cable service. Our son added us to his family plan with Cingular, so our phone is only $9.99 a month. His wife is a traveling nurse, and this enables us to talk to them wherever they happen to be without paying a long distance bill. In December, they were in Iowa, presently they are in Ohio, and when they are "home" they are in Missouri... 5 hours away from us. It sure has saved us lots of money while keeping in touch.

Momentum Phone Service

I don't have a cell phone. I lived quite well without one before and still do. I do have Momentum for my phone company. It gives me unlimited long distance, local and regional calls besides 12 different features including Caller ID, Call Waiting, Call Forwarding, Three-Way Calling and a bunch of other stuff for no additional charge. The total cost is $39.95 a month plus state and local taxes you are already charged on your regular phone bill. It comes in just under $50 which is great since I'm on the phone to my family in NY several times a day!

I have never had a problem with them, their customer service is excellent and I have had them for two years now.

Reload Your Phone Card

We have gone the route of the phone card also. But instead of buying a new card every time it is empty, we just add new minutes to it. We use an MCI card and the cost per minute is about 3.5 cents. I haven't seen a company or card that will beat that rate unless they charge you a per call fee. There is no fee for the call with MCI. Since we do not use a long distance company our phone bill is less than $25 per month and I usually put about $10 on a card at a time and that will last about 2 1/2 to 3 months.

Pay By Minute Plan

The best long distance is no long distance. I do have family out of state but I got rid of the long distance service reluctantly at first. I was given a phone card. It has been wonderful. I have over 300 minutes left on it. It started with 450 minutes. it just requires an 800# then my pin #. That way, I don't have a long distance bill if I don't use it this month. It's cool!

VOIP - Vonage

Hey if you use a cable modem you can sign up with any voice over internet service. I am with Vonage and they give you all the bells and whistle services plus free long distance to anywhere in the US and Canada. My price plan is $24.99 which with tax come to around $28.00 a month. Beat that! This is unlimited long distance!! The sound quality is excellent and I can't tell the differece. It's great!

ECG Long Distance Or Just Use Email

I am happy with ECG at 3.9 cents/minute with no monthly fees. It's the lowest I know of without having to sign up for direct debit. Frankly, if it comes down to rent, food, or my long distance company, guess who's going to wait? I don't do direct debit because it forces me to put the least important thing first.

Another option is to use email and written letters in place of phone calls some of the time.

Shop Around For Phone Cards

If you make a lot of long distance phone calls. Shop around for phone cards. I found one (at Sam's Club) for 2.9 cents per minute. That is a real bargain, the 2.9 that includes tax, FCC line charges, universal fee. Those fees can add up to $10.00+ per month.

Spring PCS

We use SprintPCS for our long distance. Long distance is free and Sprint to Sprint phones provide free calls, as well as after 7pm and weekends. http://www.sprintpcs.com

By Kidseatfree

Compare Your Phone Company Rates First

See if your phone company has a long distance plan. We have 250 minutes a month for just $12. It's through the phone company, so there's no dialing numbers off a phone card before calling.

By BrookesMommy

Make Sure Long Distance Is Canceled On Your Home Phone

I didn't realize, until I called the phone company, that you aren't *required* to have a long distance company on your home phone. We use our cell phone for long distance, and so we were paying our long distance carrier for NOTHING! They charged us a fee even when we didn't use it at all. Better late than never.

P.S. The man at the phone company didn't even know if we "had" to have a long distance carrier. He had to put me in touch with a customer care rep.

Homemade Candle Scents

Homemade scents for candlemaking.

Use Essential Oil

My best suggestion is to use a few drops of essential oil. Find the scent you like best and use that. Essential oils should mix with the wax and retain their scent. The only other thing I can think of is to put pieces of cinnamon stick in the candle. Make sure to put them in a part of the candle that will not burn because the stick will burn if the flame gets to it so keep them to the outside of the candle.

By Susan

Recycle Old Candles

I like using my double boiler to "recycle" lifeless candles. Then for x-mas candles I would sprinkle cinnamon/nutmeg in the wax and stir gently, or use very little perfume.

By Lisa

Use Extracts For Baking

Use vanilla, almond, orange or lemon extract you buy in the grocery store.

By Leigh-Ann

I just tried making candles for the first time last night. I couldn't find any peppermint scent, so I just got peppermint extract. I also had some lemon extract lying around the house. My friend came over and we tried the lemon first, doing three eyedroppers full. When we lit them, we couldn't smell anything. Then we made a peppermint one and did about six or seven full eyedroppers and you can smell it if you get your nose right up to the rim of the container. i don't know if it was the essential oils, the creme wax, or the stearine that did it, but it smelled fine in the pot.

Painting Over Stained Wood

We are in the process of painting out our kitchen. One of the doors looks like it has had a wood stain or has been oiled - it is rather dark and we want to paint it a pastel shade. Can I just use an undercoat and paint normally or will I have to rub it all back?

Slow Cooker Recipes

This is my first time to this website and it looks great! I have a question that I'm hoping someone could help me with. I have a slow cooker and I don't know what to cook in it. I cooked pork and that turned out well - I tried beef and that turned into a silverside type dish. I have also tried a casserole, but does anyone else have any great ideas or recipes? Thank you!

Gutter Guard Product Reviews

Does anyone have any info on a "gutter guard" product or system that work well, lasts, and does not cost close to $1000 or more? I am looking for something that keeps leaves out but does not catch them on top, and lets rain into the gutter but does not let the rain flow beyond the gutter.

Pruning Hydrangeas

I am wondering about the proper technique for pruning my mophead hydrangeas. They have only bloomed once. One was planted by the prior owners of our house and it never bloomed. I planted another close by, which bloomed and then so did the older one! That was two years ago. Since then, I tried pruning one year- resulting in no blooms. This year I did nothing in the lines of pruning and the only flower I got was buried at the very bottom in the back of the plant. Should I be covering the hydrangeas in the winter time or will proper pruning help?

White Microfiber Shirt

My husband has a white microfiber shirt that he loves but it is turning gray and splotchy, particularly on the back. It has some white spots on it from using a bleach pen to remove stains. This just shows how gray the shirt has become. It says not to bleach it but I really want to get it white again! I wonder if our well water could be partly to blame. What should I do?

Growing English Laurel From Cuttings

I'm trying to propagate English Laurel. I need a super-fast growing hedge for privacy and can't afford to buy the plants. But I DO have access to cuttings.

Here's what I've tried so far: I'm using flat plastic boxes about 4 " deep with just sand in some and plant soil mixed with sand in others. I cut the little darlings off their mother hedge and let them soak up water in a vase for 2 days, then I clipped them off just under a "Leaf Node" and scored the bottom inch vertically with a knife then dipped them into rooting powder nad planted them into the sand. Some I cut from the bush in the Spring, and some in July. (I've heard Fall or Spring is best?)

But, I killed off about half of the cuttings because someone told me to and cover the whole bunch with clear plastic and make a sort-of "terrarium" for them because they love moisture. I only covered them for 3 days, but most of them died during those 3 days, (I think from moisture rot?) So, I took the plastic off them and pulled out the leaves and stems. I've heard "Good Drainage" is the key. But I water them before they dry out. They are on the North side of my Mobile Home. (mostly in the shade, except in the early morning)

I have just bought some Perlite and was thinking of using this in place of sand for new cuttings. Will it work, or should I mix it with sand too? If any of you has made successful rooted cuttings from English Laurel, your help would be very much appreciated! Help!

Treating a Dog's Ear Infection Without Antibiotics

I came here for some natural healing advice for my dog who was going through a fungal skin problem. I tried a lot of the tips I received and it cleared up! :) So, now I'm going to try it again. The same dog (poor thing) now has an ear infection or is close to it. The last time he had one, his ear was a lot redder. Again, looking for natural healing tips to use to clear it up. I have cleaner I got from the last time (he had to take pills too), but as we recently moved, have yet to find it. I'm still going through boxes. If anyone has a tip/idea to try, it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
