I would like to give Martha Stewart a big nod of approval for the graceful way she has handled herself upon completing her prison sentence.

Martha has been the "Queen Mother" of thrifty home projects, food and beverage recipes, gardening tips and on and on. Besides being a smart business person, Martha has inspired millions of people to do home projects to look at detail and to enjoy a quality of life with simple means or much means.

I forgive Martha for her mistake. I believe she was given a rather harsh treatment by the court. I look forward to enjoying more of what Martha will share with us.

How do you feel about Martha?

She is a smart woman, she lied and she took the consequences.

Carol DuVall, in my opinion, is much better in offering a variety of crafts, and she is kind to those around her.

However,
all that said,

I rushed out yesterday after the pattern was posted, and bought the yarn, the hook, and am now making the "coming out poncho" for my favorite charity to auction off!

Martha Stewart has made a huge amount of money doing what she does best--homemaking, cooking, practicing domestic arts. Nothing wrong with that! She lied to federal prosectutors about a stock deal that they couldn't have prosecuted her on in the first place, so I think she was made an "example" of. Her "crime" was nowhere near as heinous as some of the Enron, Tyco, etc. creeps are trying to get away with, to say nothing of the lying that came from all the tobacco company exec's. She took her lumps, got her jail time out of the way, and I admire her for that. I think that the experience has given her a different perspective, and that's a "good thing". Give the woman a break, for heaven's sake.

I am sorry, but I do not support Martha Stewart at all. She is a smart woman, and she knew what she was doing, along with what could happen if she ever were caught. I do not believe it to be a mistake of any sort because a woman as deeply involved in the industry as she is had to know these things. I felt her actions said she is above other people, and that the rules that apply to us all, don't her. I do not think she got what she deserved. I think she deserved more. Had it been you or I, we would have been given just that.

Martha Stewart did the crime but I don't feel she did the time! A prison is not supposed to be a country club! You are there to be punished not made comfortable! I think it's a sad state of affairs in this country when someone can go to prison and then come out actually MORE popular than they were before they went in! As for saying she got a raw deal, there has to be some truth in the conviction she received otherwise there would have been no evidence at all against her!

It's a little difficult feeling sorry for someone as arrogant as Martha Stewart. I'm sure she lied, who wouldn't to try to stay out of prison? More of "these" people should be caught. She had it easy at Camp Cupcake, whether she wants to admit it or not. Of course it's not how she was used to living, but it shouldn't have been, she got caught breaking the law! I agree, you do the crime you pay the time! As for her house arrest---have you seen that mansion? She has it good!

I do like Martha Stewart and love her style and her tips. She got caught doing what millions of people do. She paid the price and served her time gracefully. I feel they could have let her do something in the community rather than serve jail time. After all, O.J. walked and look at the horrific crimes he committed. I love the Martha Stewart line of products. Everything is either soft and pastel or bright a cheery. They don't cost any more than the next brand.

Martha Stewart is no better than the rest of us. If you do the crime, you do the time. Celebrities think that they can get away with anything, just because they are celebrities. I do not understand the people who come out in support of them even when they are so obviously guilty. Anyone for placing bets that Michael Jackson will get off?? Then you will have thousands of people feeling sorry for him.

I have always detested Martha Stewart but her recent legal problems have caused me to rethink that position. When the likes of Ken Lay are put behind bars for ruining people's lives and futures, then her punishment will become fair to the crime. Until that day she received unequal treatment under the law.

Has anyone TRIED to lobby their representatives in government. good luck. I not only think she was treated unfairly because she was a woman, I think her political affiliations had much to do with it as well.

I don't consider her thrifty by any means but, after she was sent to prison, I subscribed to her magazine to show my support of her. I think she did the right thing in accepting the punishment, unfair as it was. Wouldn't it be nice if Kenny Boy would do the same.

martha stewart was not convicted of insider trading. She was convicted of lying to federal investigators. I think the sentence was a bit harsh personally and feel that the electronic monitoring device is over the top, drug dealers don't have to wear that device when released. I think she is being made a example of and feel that maybe a more appropriate sentence might have been martha using her skills and talents to help improve the lives of poor and needy. Maybe community service would be a better option for her.

What is this thread about????????

Martha Stewart was convicted of insider trading. I don't know if she was guilty or not, I haven't heard the evidence - no one here seems to suggest she wasn't. She was convicted and spent time in prison.

Some people seem to suggest she was treated more harshly because she was a celebrity or because she was a woman. Hello!? The judicial system is not fair, anyone who thinks it is should look at the disproportionate amount of poor male African Americans in prison, or in Australia, Aboriginal people. Those with money can always afford better legal representation than those without - just imagine the sentence she would have got if she was poor and black!

The fact that she appeared to accept her punishment with 'grace', 'dignity' or 'class' means what? Many thousands of people, not in the public eye, are put in prison every year and have no choice but to accept it. If she accepted her guilt surely she should have pleaded guilty, with grace. She had no choice but to accept her punishment.

As for saying she must be innocent because she had no reason to lie........perhaps being found guilty of a crime and imprisoned may be a good reason to defend yourself with lies.

At the end of all this discussion no one knows whether she guilty, how she accepted being sent to prison, or not. All the general public knows is what they are told by the media - and how reliable/truthful are they?!

What it comes down to is - are Martha Stewart's products good? Do you prefer them to anyone elses? If so buy them, if not don't. Your personal opinions are meaningless in her business empire - all that matters to her is the bottom line - will you buy her products? If you are a friend/personal acquaintance of her's I'm sure your kind feelings will comfort her, if you are a stranger she won't know/won't care.

If you feel your judicial system is allowing white collar/executive crime to go unpunished, lobby your politicians, get out on the streets and protest, make your votes count! Martha Stewart, and your opinion about her conduct/punishment is an irrelevance in this much larger situation.

Regards

Jo

I don't care if she's guilty or innocent of insider trading. In my opinion, she's NOT thrifty, many of her ideas are ridiculous and I have no desire to spend my hard earned dollars on anything with "Martha Stewart's " name on it. Martha Stewart is a marketing gimmick, pure and simple. And what you see on tv is carefully edited and programmed to be just what she wants you to see.

What happened to Martha, could have happened to any one of us. I feel the courts were hard on her because she is a celebrity. I like her, and don't feel any different about her now than I did before she did her jail time.

Literally hundreds of people go to prison for "white
collar" crimes--they do the time because they have
to. Martha is no better than any of the others...she
messed up and had to pay for it. The only difference is she had the $ to keep her home, have
her business run and plus all the press. Most others
have to find new jobs and basically start over from scratch...fair? I think the whole case shows us there is a "rich mans" justice and a "poor mans" justice.

I beleive Martha Stewart has grown positively from this experience, I do not condone what she has done, but she has done her time and that is more than I can say for other big-honcho "elite" CEOs (and others) who likewise have lied and, in addition, have harmed THOUSANDS of people. She was a convenient scapegoat to take the heat off of those criminals. I believe she has lived and learned. It IS unfortunate that the American public tends to get lead by the nosering of sensationalism, rather then really get to the core issues, and definitively dealing with more harmful white collar criminals out there. I say "Kudos." to Martha; she has turned a sow's ear into a silk purse.

Martha is not about "a good thing". She is about "marketing". She is a business person. Making money is her business, no matter what that business is, no matter what it takes to do her business. Her concern is MONEY - not what you and I think about her.

She wouldn't spit on any of her supporters if they were on fire. It's only about the money. When she was standing outside the court bldg. after she was convicted did she say thank you so much for my supporters who have bought my stuff & are backing me now? No, she said, buy my stuff. When will people who speak out for rich & famous people realize they wouldn't hand them a dime if they were losing their houses. Are the normal public ever invited to their houses or parties. How ridiculous. How hard is it to realize it's all about them & their money/fame. We could drop dead or starve to death & they couldn't care less.

I am in support of Martha going back to a real prison for the crime she did and not some fancy hotel with bars. I think she should stay longer and maybe people will catch on "if you do the crime, you do the time".

Mr. Zabe & Kevin:
You are absolutely correct. She got a 'raw deal' compared to what others in higher positions recd. I think they wanted to make an 'example' of her.
She conducted her 5 months in prison very admirably; good for you Lady.

I agree with you about Martha Stewart. Never liked her before but now I'm her biggest fan. I think someone was out to get her and the only thing they could find was a lie. There are CEO's out there that have cheated the common working man out of their retirement money and are still walking free.

Some in our government--at the TOP--are guilty of insider trading, and they never had to serve time, so I definitely, think Martha was treated unfairly...and now they have her on house arrest. That is ridiculous!
I really miss Martha's TV show, which I throughly enjoyed.
I wish her the best!

I agree with Mr. ? Martha Stewart did do wrong..she took her punishment with "class" She din't hurt other people like the Enroe bunch.. Now they should be hit with the full measure of the law...and they are still wheeling and dealing to avoid taking their medicine. Pat

Did she do wrong wth the lies, yes. Men business "tycoons" have been ruthless since time began. A woman who does the same is labeled a "Bitch". She did wrong, paid for it, now let her go on with life. May her male counterparts get the same punishments. Face it, the average person would have taken advantage of that insider info too. We are all flawed in one way or another.

I agree, she stood up, took the punishment, and handled it with grace. If Martha gets "time" for the little "lie" she did, then Ken Ley of Enron should be on death row!!!
