Tips for Photographing Dogs

Three very attentive puppies, Cody, Lola and Jake. Guess how I got this great picture? They love to play ball, so I put the ball high over my head and took the pic!

Moses (Lab/Retriever)

This is Moses (because he loves water), he is an 8 year old man. His breed is Lab/Retriever. We adopted our dog from a man going to assisted living. The man cried as we drove off. We felt so bad like we was stealing him! The man was able to visit on Friday and he did for about a year. He had interviewed quiet a few couples before us. We are not sure why he chose us.

He likes chasing cats and fetching a ball. Moses was very sick due to an allergic reaction to heart worm medicine. He was in the dog hospital for 3 days. This cat lives there and would rub and lick him. Moses would look up at us too sick to move with that look like would you get this cat away from me. The vet said the cat administered to the very sick animals and they gauged how sick by how the cat reacted. They said that, according to the cat, Moses had been very sick but that he was getting better in this picture. We had to keep him inside and quiet for 6 weeks after he was released. He is doing OK now. He tires quicker but still loves to chase the cats.

Molly Pie (American Eskimo)

Molly Pie is 3 years old, or 27 in Dog years. She is an American Eskimo (White Spitz). My husband got her for me. She was just a tiny bundle of white fur and big brown eyes, all of 6 weeks old. It was hot, hot, hot, Texas in July. He found her on Craigslist. He had to drive 60 miles one way, and 60 miles back to get her and bring her home. AND the AC was OUT in the truck. But, he went anyway and got her and she has been such a joy. She is such a character. I am so thankful for her little self. She is happy, ALWAYS happy.

She likes to herd the ducks around, and play with Abbydorable, go visit the horses and check out the pygmy goats. And her favorite toy has always been wood, sticks, branches any kind of wood. She will drag a limb in that is 8-10 foot long and gnaw it until it looks like a beaver has been in the house. I let her. I would rather she chew the branches than my antique table and it works. She doesn't chew now. My furniture survived the puppy zone. LOL.

Her best friends are Abbydorable, my Chow chow. and Sally Bear, my Keeshond, the grandmotherly type of doggie. I would look up and they would both (her and Abby) would have part of the same 8 foot branch in their mouths, DRAGGING, tugging, pulling, falling over each other while getting it to the house. I Knew Abbydorable wasn't gonna chew it, but she loves to help Molly carry them in.. Go figure..

She is the heart of my heart. I spoiled her rotten and had to back up with her. She decided my room was HER room. No other critters allowed. Well I have three dogs and two cats, not counting the farm critters.. And we could NOT have that. I investigated and talked to an animal specialist in training and she said kick her out of the room. I was like "WHAT? Kick my baby out? How long? Forever?" No just a couple of minutes. So I did just that the next time she growled at one of the other critters for coming into OUR room. I booted her gently out. I left her there for three minutes. And brought her back in. It only took three times for her to learn that it wasn't HER room. LOL. Now she is sweet and gentle to ALL critters and We are all happy again.

Oh, I use those inserts for crock pots for water bowls. And If Molly gets hot she will sit in it (ALL FOUR FEET, all scrunched up and goofy. I asked the vet about that. He said "Oh, she will grow out of that." NOT! She is 3 and to this day, if she gets hot she will climb in that crock. And look out geese or ducks. If they are in the kiddy pools we have for them, both her and Abby will be in them. Abby will rest a paw in the bowl, But Molly just climbs in. This is Molly the first night she was with us, and this is my favorite picture of her.

Today's Tips:

Making Newspaper Fire Logs

When making paper logs for fuel from newspapers, don't bother purchasing a commercial machine. In my experience they don't work very well. (I gave mine away!) All I do now, is:

  • Tear and soak the newspaper in the usual way. Squeeze it into a largish ball.

  • Wrap it in an old tea towel or half a discarded teeshirt. Twist the end of the towel until it is the shape of a Christmas pudding.

  • Leave the end tightly twisted and place it on a paving slab. Place another heavy paving slab on the top and leave for about an hour (longer is better).

  • Unwrap it and leave the log to dry.

  • (Of course, you can make multiples in one go and are only limited by the number of tea towels and heavy weights you possess.

Cheers. Hope this works for you, too.

Mark Times On Conditioner Bottles

I buy different brands of shampoos and conditioners. Basically I buy according to what is on sale and what type of coupons I have for the product.

Hair conditioner products have different directions. Sometimes you just have to rinse the conditioner out of your hair immediately or at times you leave it in your hair anywhere from one to three minutes.

Using a permanent marker, I write down the length of time on the bottle and circle it. If it is to be rinsed out immediately I don't write anything on the bottle.

Trying to read a bottle while I am showering is impossible for me. This makes it so much easier.

Have a Thrifty Reunion

Make your reunions economical, and meet somewhere that is not connected directly to one of your classmates. You will have a lot more in attendance. It relieves all the pressure. We just finished our 40th high school reunion. We made it quite cheap, and our attendance was the best in over 40 years. We also had a lot of attendees from out of state. A good time was enjoyed by all.

Shop Thrift Stores for Top Sheets

I save money on bed sheets by finding "like new" top sheets at a thrift store for about $3 each. Used bottom sheets are harder to find there, especially in queen and king size, so I buy a new plain-colored or white bottom sheet to go with the top sheet. I also have bought quite a few nice sets of twin and double bed sheets which are easier to find. Then I always use white pillowcases which go with any color scheme. Also queen and king flat sheets from the thrift store are good for the backing of a homemade quilt.

Save on Remodeling With a Commercial Account

Many people do not realize, if your doing a major home remodel/project you can go the commercial desk at Lowes or Home Depot and set up an account as if you were your own commercial contractor.

They have a couple of different options. The one I prefer to use is give them a check to open an account. They hold it and just deduct from my balance when I go to the cash register. If you don't spend it all, at your request, they return the balance and there are no service fees. I save 5-10% on each purchase. When your buying carpet, flooring, paint, and odds and ends it adds up to a great savings. I just saved $110.00 on interior paint and painting supplies, and on a couple of ceiling fans.

Sell Textbooks Online

If you have college textbooks that the store you bought them from won't take them back, because they aren't going to use them anymore, check online. They were no longer using my husband's math book, so I went online and found a place that would pay me $14 for the book. I also got to print out a prepaid postage, so it didn't even cost to mail it to them. It was less than what I paid for it but at least it was something.

Saving on Vacation Rentals

Often if you are renting a beach cottage or the sort, the longer you rent, it the higher the savings. If you know someone that takes vacation near the same time you do. You can split.

When you rent the home, rent it under both parties' names. For example: one family uses it 2 weeks, another family uses it 2 weeks on a one month rental. You will be surprised at the money you will save!

You just need to be sure the total number of people listed on the contract/agreement is going fits into their total occupant policy. For example: the house will allow 10 occupants - one family has 4, other family as 6.

Take out the rental under 10 occupants. If you go over the occupancy rate, you won't be able to rent that unit. Because there is usually only in/out cleaning service, the first family in has to be sure to leave it cleaned up and ready for the 2nd families use.

Dear Webby's Joke of the Day

What's the matter? I thought you just got back from a nice relaxing fishing trip with your husband." "Oh, everything went wrong:

First he said I talked so loud I would scare the fish. Then he said I was using the wrong bait; and then that I was reeling in too soon. All that might have been all right; but then, to make matters worse, I was the only one catching any fish!"

Biting Insect Indoors

My family and I recently bought a new mobile home. Since we moved in mainly in the master bedroom and in the bed at night my wife and I and our little girl get eaten up with bites. It started on our backsides and then to our thighs and abdomens.

We have looked and looked, someone told us we had sand fleas. So we paid $120 for the exterminators to come out and spray our house. We vacuum everyday and dump the canister outside away from the house. Any ideas about what this could be or any treatments?

Pull String Not Starting Lawnmower

I was just outside using my lawnmower on my yard which hasn't been cut recently. It was way longer than I should have been keeping it. While I was going through my backyard it quit. Multiple times.

At first I couldn't pull the cord and found out that was due to there being too much grass caught in the blade. Then I continued to cut and then it quit on me again. I thought there was more grass underneath so I lifted it up and looked underneath and it was all clear. I tried to start it again and could pull the cord just fine, but after trying to pull it over 20 times now it still hasn't started back up.

I need help. I also don't know much about fixing things so if you answer please try and put it in simple terms for me.

Looking for Dieting Advice

I'm a 31 yr old single mother. I have to have my upper teeth pulled, after having kids my teeth just went for the worst. I'm so upset by this, because I work two part time jobs and am a full time college student.

I have to go 4 weeks without teeth. I have to heal before I get the denture. At the same time I could stand to lose a few pounds, so I'm gonna use this time to lose weight. Any suggestions on what to eat during this time?

Fixing a Refrigerator Door Handle

I have a 26" side by side Maytag refrigerator. The handle snapped out of the top mounting clip. I thought this was simple and all I'd have to do is clip it back on. I have tried without success. The brackets on the handle won't snap into the base clip that is screwed onto the door.

Anyone out there who has ever had a similar experience? Right now the door handle is secured by the bottom clip. We are currently opening the fridge by simply prying the door from the top. I don't even want to think about calling a repair man for something so trivial.

Cat Aggressive to Owner and Other Cat

Why is my cat starting to bite me? We've always got along marvelously once I tamed him. He came pretty much feral out of the fields, but with lots of attention and plenty of food he became mostly tame.

Now suddenly, he's started asking for attention, but then whipping around and biting me. He is not drawing blood, not even breaking skin, just really hard fully open mouthed hard nips that are more than a nip, raising welts and no warning growl or hiss. He is really loving one moment, aggressive the next.

He isn't rabid, he doesn't come charging at me and attack. We're having a quiet time, he's just joined me so he isn't over stimulated. I don't understand this change in behavior. He's an indoor/outdoor cat, and he's been getting realyl aggressive with his pal, another cat, lately. We just don't understand this change in personality.
