Halloween: Horse Costume (Dog)

Petey is 4 months old. He is a Boxer/Bulldog/Shepard mix. My best friend Todd gave him to me in August of this year. He likes to eat, play, eat, sleep, eat, play and some more.

I never enjoyed playing with dolls when I was little, but I get a real kick out of dressing my dogs for Halloween. This year I made a special costume for Petey because he is as big as a horse! I saw something similar to this online, but thought I could make one like it much cheaper, and I did. He didn't seem to mind it a bit either. By Donna from San Diego, CA

Wedding: One Moment In Time

This is my first photo job, "The Joyner Wedding." This wedding took place on October 18, 2009 at Carolina Beach, NC, about 15 miles from Wilmington. This wedding was special to me because it was my first job. It was especially special for the bride also, it was her birthday. WOW, what a bonus for the groom.

It was a little chilly but we didn't mind. The water was calm and beautiful. I call this photo "One Moment In Time"

Patchwork Back Porch

My small back porch is somewhat of a relaxing/storage space that leads to my patio and also to my basement. I want it to look welcoming.

  1. On the left is a seat cover my G-Ma made me back in the 70's to fit a vanity seat.

  2. I made a bandanna table cloth from dollar store bandannas.

  3. I used one of my (now 21 year old son's) crib blankets used to hide the items on the shelf behind it. It is held in place along the top on the edge of the shelf with upholstery tacks.

Mia (German Shepherd)

Mia is a 10 year old German Shepherd. We adopted her when she was 7 weeks old. Her mom and siblings were living in an awful state. My husband accompanied his cousin to see Mia's sister, Bailey (who sadly, was run over by a tractor 6 weeks later) and couldn't resist bringing her home to me. He knows I'm an old softy!

She likes to be with me all the time wherever I am. Mia was feeling very sorry for herself in this photo as she had just had a stroke two days earlier. Thankfully she has made a complete recovery and we're hoping she's be with us for some time to come!

In Memory of Little Bit (Long Haired Angora)

Little Bit (AKA Bitsy) is 14. He is a Long Haired Angora. Got my pet from my daughter and granddaughter when we met. He loves cheese, sleeping, watching birds and being the King of the House. We lost him recently and I just wanted to share him with all of you.

Hand Lotion to Polish Imitation Leather

I use cheap hand lotion to polish away the scuff marks on my imitation leather shoes. Works beautifully. Just smooth on and wipe off excess with a paper towel or a sock without a mate!

Use Pipe for Towel Bars

A great way to save $ on towel bars is to purchase a small piece of pipe of your choice (I happen to like the copper) at the hardware store. You can simply attach these with curtain rod hardware.

When you compare this to the cost of a proper towel bar, it is a fraction of the cost.

Sample Laundry Detergent Stain Treatment

I received a small sample bottle of laundry detergent. I had a stain on a shirt so I put a little detergent directly on the spot and laundered as usual. No special "stain remover" or fancy oxy anything. The stain came out and I have been refilling the little bottle with my regular laundry detergent and pre-treating stains ever since. It even gets out sweaty mechanic's collar stains. You could use a small dish liquid bottle if you don't have a small laundry sample bottle. I have saved a bundle of money and don't have as many bottles sitting in laundry room.

Rainy Day Gift

My wonderfully, creative daughter came up with this idea one year "Money for a Rainy Day". Choose 10-20 bills (use whatever denomination you want), and tape a string on each (use various string lengths). Tie the strings individually to the ribs of an open umbrella. Close the umbrella, making sure the bills are tucked inside. Let the recipient know this is a "rainy day gift." When opened, the bills flutter down - very impressive!

Hair Washing Tips

If you wash your hair more than once a week, save on shampoo and only shampoo once. Just scrub a little longer with the one shampoo.

If your hair is oily, add a capful of rubbing alcohol to your shampoo to cut the oil.

Take it from an old beautician, it has worked for 40 years.

Use Old Bread Box to Control Kitchen Clutter

Using an old wooden breadbox to store misc items has really improved the everyday kitchen clutter that I used to have laying around or stuck to the fridge with magnets.

In the box, I have an old coffee mug that holds a few pens and screwdrivers, a notepad for grocery listing, memory tickler notes to myself, the everyday telephone / address book, an envelope for Canadian Tire money, product coupons and stamps, a regular calendar for appointments, birthdays, etc., the city calendar showing garbage pickup schedules and the list goes on.

Whenever someone is looking for something, the first place we go is to the breadbox and 99% of the time, it's there! No more looking all over for that newspaper clipping, paint chip sample card, or whatever.

Fabric Freshener for Room Deodorizer

Room deodorizers can get expensive. A friend of mine gave me this tip; fill a spray bottle about half full of fabric freshener; febreeze, suavatel, etc. (I use suavatel). Add water to full mark.

It makes an excellent room deodorizer, and guess what? The fabric refresher people just came out with their own version of this 'homemade thrifty' product (much more expensive, I might add)!

"Is that so?" the manager says. "What companies are after you?"

Surviving Family Thanksgiving

We are currently having a problem with my mother-in-law and Thanksgiving. My husband and I invited both of our families over this year at our place. His mother has a problem with this because she is allergic to our two cats. She also smokes two packs of cigarettes a day, and has heart problems. She says it takes her 3 days to recuperate, when she has come over in the past. I had the cats before I met my husband who loves them, too.

We can't have a combined Thanksgiving at my mom's house, because she has more cats than we do, so that leaves the mother-in-law's house. My mom doesn't like his mom very much. My mom has come in the past to Thanksgiving dinner at my husband's grandpa and aunt's house. This year the aunt is having Thanksgiving at her son's house.

A couple of weeks ago, I mentioned to my mom that we wanted to have it at our place this year with everyone invited. She said it sounded good. But now because of my mother in law, we are at the point of either doing it at her house, or doing it separate with my husband spending the day with his family, and me with mine. I don't want to do that because this is our first Thanksgiving as a married couple.

My mother-in-law can be difficult and told my husband in the past that she loves fighting and getting her way. Are there any suggestions you can give because this is driving me crazy? I'm so worried about having to deal with this for all the holidays, when we have kids in the future. Please help us with advice of what you would do for the holidays in this situation.

P.S. - I forgot to add that our families live on opposite ends of town (one hour drive from one family to the other), and we live in the middle so our place is convenient for both families.

Effusion Lamp Keeps Burning Out

My effusion lamp burns out after a while. I soaked the ceramic and wick for several days in alcohol to clean it. I added homemade lamp oil and it burned for a couple of hours then went out. Rust or Mineral Stains on Laundry

The water we have coming into our home has rust in it. It is city water. It created orangish spots on our clothes (many friends suffer this same problem). However, the spots appear on browns, grays, and some yellows. They do not appear on reds, pinks, or greens. I have asked every professional and others how to get rid of this and no one has an answer. My washer is new so it is not the problem. Please help me if you can.

Bubbles When Sealing Countertops

I have read all of the post on painting countertops over the past few weeks and thank you for all the wonderful advice and pictures. I got the courage and started on mine a few days ago I sanded, primed, painted with Rustoleum granite spray and coated with famowood glaze coat.

The problem I have is there are a few bumps that are about the size of a pin hole that I would like to get out, I have read that I can wet sand and apply a second coat of glaze. My question is do I need to wait the 72 hours till it is cured to sand and apply another coat?

Also, do I need to sand and 2nd coat all of the counters or only the spaces where the small bumps are? Thanks in advance.
