Summer Beach Garden

We have a summer home in Fenwick, Island, De. My husband is a avid surf fisher. I decided to create a small beach garden for him at our main home in NJ. I've placed it for him to see as he leaves for work everyday. This reminds him, that he'll soon get back to the beach. Now, he starts his day with this happy reminder. In this section are all the plants, artifacts, and even a red caution ribbon from Coney Island, NY. We brought up buckets of the sand from the beach as well.

Wildlife: Little Egrets(?) at Key West

I took this one in Key West! I was walking around site seeing as I stumbled across these two white birds. They were resting by a pond behind our resort. I had to creep down on the grass and keep quiet. But I think it turned out really nice. :)

Winston (Chow/Retriever Mix)

This is Winston Ogden Churchill. He is 7 years old and is a Chow/Retriever Mix. I found him when he was about 3 months old at the Humane Society. The moment I saw him "behind bars" my heart just broke into a thousand pieces. I knew he was meant to be part of our family.

He loves the water and also loves to take a ride in the Wrangler to get ice cream. When he's chillin' he resides under our bed (don't you dare stick your hand under the bed to get him because this usually friendly dog will rip your arm off!) He's mostly very friendly...until it's time for a bath. I don't get it, he loves the stream and will lie it all day. But he HATES getting a bath.

Strong Facial Peel Recipe

I am not sure how I came about this information but, for anyone who needs a strong facial peel or exfoliater:

  • crushed regular aspirin
  • baking soda
  • lemon juice
You can add other ingredients as you wish, such as witch hazel. This will foam up immediately!

Most people's skin can only handle 15 minutes or so with it on. I am now used to leaving it on overnight and then in a few days watching layers of skin start to peel off along with clogged pores, bumps, spots etc. Do NOT use overnight on nose or very sensitive thin areas of your face or you may end up getting a worse break-out. Makes your skin tight from the drying.

Make Organizing Trays Out of Cereal Boxes

When empty, I use wide "scotch" tape to stick the top together of cereal boxes, then cut the top and bottom off to the depth of approx. 2 inch (or cut the sides instead for longer narrow "trays"). They are then covered with the plastic you can purchase that has a sticky backing, which not only makes them stronger but can be wiped clean with a damp cloth. They are then used to keep the cutlery drawer nice and tidy, I also use them for my "clutter" drawer to keep pens, pencils, scissors, rubber bands, thumb tacks etc. Also used in my sewing machine drawers for different items, they can be used for SO many things and they last a long long time.

Source: I was so tired of the plastic drawer tidy trays cracking,I had to think of something more practical!

Using It All - Ointment

I keep a baby at my home during the week and I get so frustrated when the tube of Aquaphor Healing Ointment is almost gone and I just can't get the last bit to squeeze out! Knowing good and well that there is plenty still in there and I am going to have to throw it out! So I decided to cut the tube about an inch or so (depending on the size of the tube) below the (squeeze) top. Then all I have to do is scoop a bit out with my finger. I put the top part with what is left into a small ziplock bag. I was amazed at just how MUCH was left in there! Guess it will work with any sort of squeeze tube. Well, don't think I'd try it with toothpaste!

Tips From a $300 Wedding

When my husband and I got married, we only spent $300 out of our pockets for the entire wedding. That included the flowers, my dress, invitations and programs. You can have a great wedding for a lower price as well.

Dress: Rather then buy an expensive wedding dress that you will only wear once in your lifetime, find a beautiful dress at a second hand store or a lovely sundress. I purchased a white sundress from Banana Republic for only $70. I have been able to wear it over and over again with different sweaters over top.

Flowers: Purchase pre-made bouquets at a craft store like Michael's or Hobby Lobby. For the mother/father of the bride/groom and bestman/groomsmen flowers, have the flower desk make them for you. You can pick out the flowers that you want to use. All of my flowers cost less then $150 total and I still have my bouquet and my husband's flower.

Invitations/Programs: Make your own. Find a bulletin paper that you like and use it for your invites and programs. I found mine on clearance so I only spent about $20 for a pack of 200.

Food: Have a buffet and ask family members to help supply the food. That was the one thing that we did not spend any money on at all. Also, ask friends if they would be willing to help make sure that the food containers stay full. You will be surprised how many people would be willing to help with that.

Pictures/Video: If you have someone in your family who is wonderful with taking pictures, ask them if they would consider making that their wedding gift to you by taking the pictures. We only spent $70 on all of our pictures & my husbands uncle took 8 rolls. That even included copies of pictures for family, friends, wedding party and our album pictures.

Decor: Ask if there is someone who has wedding supplies that you can borrow for your wedding.

I hope that some of these ideas help you while you are planning your wedding. There are many other ways that you can have a fantastic wedding for under $1,000. These are just things that I can up with myself in order to have my wedding and not spend a ton of money or go into debt over my wedding.

Use Craft Containers For Daily Medication and Vitamins.

The dosette cases from the pharmacy did not have enough room to hold my daily vitamins and medication. The craft or dollar store have small round cases that screw into one another.

Buy enough for morning, afternoon (if you need), and night. Set them up for the 7 days of the week and label each one by day and time i.e. am, noon, pm.

As you take your vitamins and medication, place the empty container on the bottom and the next day and dosage will be right on hand. Buy a few extra containers as they do tend to break down with usage.

I hope this helps. It became a life saver for me when I was having difficulty remembering if I took my medication.

Be Considerate When Parking for Garage Sales

Regarding yard sales, please use kind driving and parking etiquette when attending yard sales. I cannot count how many potential accidents I have encountered.

  • Preoccupied aggressive drivers zipping into a parking spot
  • Cars partially parked on a road way
  • Shoppers encroaching on neighbor's driveways or yards.

Sellers, be prepared to respond to shoppers who may ask to use your phone or restroom. You may choose to redirect them to a local convenience store.

Another helpful idea is to shop with small bills rather then twenties and fifties.

Put Mayo Between Meat and Cheese To Prevent Soggy Sandwiches

My son loves Bologna and Cheese sandwiches with Mayo, but I've always hated knowing that by lunch he was eating a soggy sandwich. SO, I started putting the mayonnaise on between the bologna and cheese so that the bread doesn't get soggy. It's worked wonders and he doesn't complain.

Pack and Freeze Individual Servings From Your Fruit Trees

We have fruit trees, and end up with far more fruit than we can eat fresh, despite sharing with friends and neighbors. I go to the restaurant supply store and get a sleeve of 5 1/2 ounce individual serving cups (I pay about 5 dollars for 250, and several dollars more for lids) which means about 3 cents for a set.

We peel/cut/core the fruit (apples, peaches, pears) and cook them until they're soft enough to mash with a potato masher. We ladle the fruit sauces into the containers, put the tops on, label, and freeze. (I usually put a small amount of cinnamon sugar on some for my husband--he likes them a little sweeter than the daughters and I; otherwise, we use no sugar.)

When we are packing lunches, we grab a frozen fruit cup and put it in the lunch box. It helps to keep the lunch cool until lunch time, and is usually thawed by lunch. (I like it still partially frozen!)

The disposable cups are not the most "green" solution; but we have moved to as many reusable containers as possible, as well as using cloth napkins and garage sale cutlery in our lunches, so I like to think we are offsetting our carbon footprint, as well as using the precious fruit.

Preparing Graham Cracker Crumbs For Holiday Baking

In cleaning out my food pantry yesterday, I found that I had three unopened boxes of graham crackers. I was surprised since I usually do not stockpile things. Rather than waste the crackers and the money it cost to purchase them, I decided to make graham crackers crumbs for pie crusts. I began crumbling them up with my hands in the unopened sleeves. In the process of crumbling, the ends came open. So I decided after crumbling them to pour the crumbs into zip lock sandwich bags. One bag would hold the entire sleeve. I flattened them out and took out as much air as possible. I then put all of them into an air tight plastic container and popped them into the freezer. I found a recipe for making a 9 inch pie crust online and put the recipe into the container as well.

Now I am ready to make pie crusts at the drop of a hat. And I won't have to go looking for the recipe either! With the Holidays just around the corner, I am ready for any cheesecake or creamy pies requiring graham cracker crusts! Also, I won't have to run to the grocery store looking for those crusts either.

Dear Webby's Joke of the Day

A priest was being honored at his retirement dinner after 25 years in the parish. A leading local politician and member of the congregation was chosen to make the presentation and give a little speech at the dinner.

He was delayed, so the priest decided to say his own few words while they waited.

"I got my first impression of the parish from the first confession I heard here. I thought I had been assigned to a terrible place. The very first person who entered my confessional told me he had stolen a television set and, when questioned by the police, was able to lie his way out of it. He had stolen money from his parents, embezzled from his employer, had an affair with his boss' wife and taken illegal drugs.

I was appalled, but as the days went on, I knew that my people were not all like that and I had, indeed, come to a fine parish full of good and loving people."

Just as the priest finished his talk, the politician arrived full of apologies for being late. He immediately began to make the presentation and gave his talk.

"I'll never forget the first day our parish priest arrived," said the politician. "In fact, I had the honor of being the first person to go to him for confession."

Lilac Bushes Look Wilted

I bought 2 lilac shrubs when all the flowers went on clearance at Walmart. They looked fine when I bought them and brought them home. I left them in their pots for about 2-3 weeks before I got to plant them. I got them planted into the ground but by that time they looked sort of wilted. I watered and watered and it didn't work so I added some miracle growth stuff and watered.

That didn't work so I thought maybe too much water so I cut back to 1 time a week and that didn't work. Its been 2 1/2 months and they still look wilted, barely alive. What should I do, I was hoping to get them established before winter hits.

Making Yard More Interesting

We have a very plain back yard. Nothing special. One rusted tool shed, one old swing set with pots of thyme underneath, and one gas BBQ grill on the patio with a cracked concrete floor - no awning. Also there is one small vegetable garden on the opposite side of the yard, a couple of nondescript bushes, one half dead pine tree and one crape myrtle.

The yard is shaped like a capital L. I was just wondering if there are a few things we could do to make it stand out - kind of like a rule of thumb. If you were to spiff up a yard, what would you do as a matter of course?

Burning Bush Has No Leaves

We planted 2 dwarf burning bushes in March right before our record rainfall of the year. Both plants' root balls sat basically underwater for a week, one worse than the other. The one developed leaves and seems fine but the other never developed leaves although it is covered in buds that never opened. We cut a stem and it is green inside and still seems to be alive.

Our question is: is there some way to prune it to possibly "bring it to life", is it a lost cause, or should we wait until next spring to see if it restarts after winter? We don't want to dig it up and replace it if it can make it since it has tried hard all summer.

Hanging Fabric Up Instead Of Painting

I have wallpaper that I spent a fortune for, and for re-sale, would like to keep. My teenage daughter wants to paint over it with black paint. I just read how a couple of coats of primer would cover up the wallpaper, then the black, but a friend said there's some way that you can put black fabric, like curtains, throughout the room, using rods or some other way of holding them up.

Problem is, you can't hang anything on the "curtains". Has anyone ever done this? Has anyone truly painted over wallpaper, with black paint, and then brought it back to life in a neutral color. Has anyone heard of this fabric hanging? I've been surfing around, but can only find people that use fabric over the wallpaper. Does it pull off the wallpaper once you take off? I'm at a loss. Any suggestions would really help. Thanks.

Using Plywood For Flooring

I recently bought a house and will be doing a lot of work on it. I pulled all the carpet up and it does have hardwood floors and they are in great condition. The house was built about 40 years ago and the flooring has wide spaces between the pieces. I have thought about using some type of filler to fill the gaps then thought about using wood laminate on top but after checking the prices it would cost me several thousand to do the whole house.

I am rethinking that unless I can find it on clearance. So, what I am thinking now is using plywood as the floor and staining it. I am thinking of taking large pieces of plywood and cutting them into strips or using the whole pieces but I think cutting it would look better. What type of wood is best for floors that won't dent easy and what thickness of wood is best? Wood laminate is thin so can plywood of the same thickness be used?

I don't like the idea of nails showing so would it work to use a liquid nail or a wood glue? I am looking for any ideas and help that anyone can offer and if anyone has ever done this and can share a picture.

Looking For Odor Gun Product
