1951 Singer Sewing Machine Won't Start?

1951 Singer Sewing Machine Won't Start - vintage SingerThis sewing machine was given to me by my grandma and I've never used any sewing machine before. I am attempting to learn how, but when I plug it in it does nothing. Does this mean the motor is broken or is there something I'm not doing? I've tried looking up videos, but they're very confusing when you don't know what you're doing.

The problem can be with the power cord being faulty, the on and off switch can be the issue if it is the fault and when turned on will not power up the machine or you have an issue with the motor of the machine and it may need replacing.

Thank you for your response and this may sound stupid but I'm not sure if there is an on/ off switch. I can only see where to plug in the cord. I've looked and looked but I think it might just be the cord running from the machine to the foot pedal.

The light turns on when I plug it in but does nothing when I press down on the foot pedal.

I do not believe you will be able to find your problem without the help of experts on this model sewing machine.
Fortunately there is a site that has lots of experience repairing vintage Singer sewing machines.

You will have to join but the message only sign in free but it can get confusing sometimes.
After you join you will need to send several pictures and give a full description of your problem. They will want to know the serial number but do not worry if you have not found it as they will tell you where to find this number. From that number they can tell when the machine was made and help you with any problems you have now or in the future.
Do not be timid about this site as these are great people and will help you through everything.
They will love this machine as it looks almost brand new - beautiful - you are so fortunate to have it.
They will also be able to help you find sewing lessons and videos that will work with this machine.

You will find a contact email link on this page if you need further assistance.

This is also a good link:

groups.io/.../guidelines

If you cannot get the help you need from any of these groups you may want to find a Singer repair shop and have them do a complete clean up on your machine.
Caution: this is a beautiful machine so be sure you take lost of pictures (even while in the shop) so you can be sure you will have YOUR machine when time to pick up. I know some may think I am being overly cautious but I have been a victim and also know of others.
Repairs can be very expensive so check for estimates before taking machine. You can remove the machine from the cabinet.

You can find sewing lessons for beginners online but you may want to check with Michael's or JoAnn's to see if they have names for anyone giving sewing lessons as hands on is the best way to learn.

You can also Google sewing lessons with your zip code to see if there is a class near you. Some will be free but not all.

I can understand how you feel and you are so lucky to have something this nice and know that it was once used by a loved one.
It is not unusual for an older machine to not have an on/off switch so do not be concerned about this as it's possible the mother was added later.

Please contact Ismac's as they love these machines and will definitely help you. It may take a little while to understand how their site works as they just had to 'move' their site and still needs some kinks worked out.
