Years ago I saw a segment on the Today show, about cheaper alternatives for acne treatment.
It called for Cetaphil-type cleanser, and using the same for moisturizer if the skin gets too dry.
Using baking soda as a scrub, witch hazel or peroxide as an astringent, and dabbing on milk of magnesia as a mask or spot treatment, and leaving it on overnite.
Acne is a horrible condition, and I hope you get some relief from it!

Hi Miriam,

Thought I could be helpful with this question: I have been a fashion model for almost 6 years and maintaining beautiful skin is very important to my job. Over the years I've gotten some great beauty tips from fellow models.

I don't know how old your daughter is, but I suffered from pretty bad acne from 13 years old to about 17 years old (when I finally found the solution). I tried all drugstore products and even went to dermatologists over the years, and they either didn't work, worked temporarily, and almost all dried out my skin horribly. The problem is all these products just target the surface of your skin and not the source of the acne which is much deeper under you skin.

When I signed with an agency, they told me to get SilkPeel Microdermabrasion at a good dermatologist, not a spa (and so many models I talk to swear by this). It is extremely pricey for one session (mine was $200, but they range from $100-$200). For microdermabrasion, they recommend that you do 4-6 sessions, a month between each session, for long term results.

Well I saw immediate results after the first one, then I went in for a 2nd session one month later, and had nearly flawless skin (even my acne scars were fading), so I did a 3rd session and my skin was completely acne free, acne scar free, and my skin was glowing! I never went for a 4th like they recommended, and the most amazing thing was that my skin was flawless for 4 years after that! I just stuck with organic/ natural face wash after that and argan oil at night time as a moisturizer.

In the end the $200x3 = $600 was well worth the money to have my acne disappear, my scars go away, and have amazing skin for 4 years with barely any upkeep. My parents spent far more money on different drugstore acne products, dermatologist appointments, dermatologist recommended creams & gels... these all added up to a lot more $$ over time and never gave me clear skin!

I have advised this to several of my "non-model" friends with acne to do this, and they have all had equally amazing results.

AND the plus is that if you start microdermabrasion at an early age (pre-wrinkles), it's the best anti-aging treatment out there. Cindy Crawford is said to have started at 20, doing it once a year. I do it about once every 2 years now to maintain my skin.

Hope this helps your daughter!

Go to a doctor. There are good medications to treat acne - stuff that actually works! If home remedies actually worked, no one would have acne!

If you have tried all the over the counter products that can be purchased at the drug store, and used them faithfully, then it is time to get medication. There is no need to suffer and have your skin scarred.

My daughter had terrible acne for many years. We went to Dermatologists and she used medications and creams. It was really affecting her life. She finally went to a new Dermatologist who recommended Accutane. This is a problematic drug with many very serious side effects.

Because my daughter was so desperate and this new Dermatologist was so respected, I gave my permission for her to have the drug. It worked. She did two courses of the drug. Her skin is flawless now. She had to have monthly pregnancy tests because the drug causes birth defects. Was it worth it? Yes.

The only thing that ever helped me was a visit to the doctor, he prescribed an antibiotic (can't remember the name of it), go to your family doctor. Hope this helps.

I have found dabbing tea tree oil on the blemishes really helps.

I was prescribed antibiotics and purchased many a cure. The thing that worked for me was: Maalox actually I had a generic plain brand and
would apply this on my washed and dry face let it dry then rinsed it off well

The stuff in the Maalox draws up the oils. It works try it!
