- The baking soda is well-known for its cleaning properties. This substance is able to absorb odors. Before using your vacuum, add a tablespoon of baking soda to the bag.
- You can place a perfume pad on the top of the filter of the vacuum machine.
- Essential oils especially organic oils are good deodorizers, for example thyme, lemongrass and lavender. These oils will not only create pleasant smells while vacuuming but also help to prevent mold from developing. Mix around 20-30 drops of oil with 10 liters of water, put the solution in a spray bottle with some baking soda, then spray inside the vacuum bag.

- Cinnamon is an effective deodorizer in terms of cost and performance. Put a little cinnamon in the vacuum bag. It will help to protect your house from unwanted bacteria and germs, its aroma is not too strong.
There are commercial vacuum cleaner fresheners:
- SEBO Fresh Air Scent Tabs (Orangina Sun) is recommended for homes with pets. Put one capsule inside the dust bag
- Scent Tablets. Place one tablet inside the dust bag.
- Fresh Wave Odor Removing Vacuum Beads (5.25 oz) is safe for humans, pets and the Earth because of its natural ingredients and its environmentally-friendly design. Put a cap of vacuum beads in the dust bag.

Better prevent the vacuum cleaner from emitting bad smells.
- Check the bag and replace it with a new one if it is too old. Try to buy authentic bags manufactured or recommended by the brand. You should change the bag every 6 months but it can be shorter if you use the vacuum machine very often.

- Some models of vacuums have filters that can get caked with all the dust and debris. Just check your owner's manual to see the location and best procedure for cleaning or replacing them. Some filters are disposable and need to be replaced, others can be rinsed, dried, and reused. It is recommended to replace the filter every 3 months to 12 months. If you are not sure about how often the filter should be cleaned, please read the provided manual of your machine or contact the manufacturer directly to ask for this information.
- Don't forget to check the vacuum belt and the brush roller before using the vacuum cleaner if any hair, pet hair, string, etc. are stuck there or not.
- Use a wet cloth to wipe all the surface of the vacuum cleaner including the hose, the filter, etc. After, use another dry cloth to clean these parts.

- After the cleaning task, you should clean the dust bag.

First of all you should clean your vacuum very well.
Sprinkle 2 tablespoons of baking soda into the bag.
1/4 cup of 'Downy Unstoppables' into the bag.
Dryer sheet into the bag
Cotton ball w/ several drops of essential oils into the bag.
There are also several commercial scents for sale, as well.

A teaspoon of Baking Soda is a great go to product, for your valcuum cleaner. Baking soda is added to many products still today, to keep things fresh smelling and odor free, without a lot of harsh chemicals.

You can also add a drop or two of essential oil for fragrant .

If your vacuum bag is 'smelly' then you are leaving this same odor in your house every time the vacuum is used.
There are so many different types of cleaners that it is difficult to answer your question reliably without knowing the brand and model as some types use replaceable bags or a container and no bag. Some have reusable filters while others rely on a filter in the bag. Removing odors when you have pets can be different than removing odors without pets.

But, basically, everyone has offered useful advice to help cover some odors in any type of vacuum cleaner.

I would suggest you do some research using the brand of cleaner you are using and contact the company about your problem so they can offer suggestions for their brand/model. Most companies are very helpful with problems like this.

If you really want to remove the odors you'll most likely have to do a complete cleaning job and then do some keep up maintenance every few weeks/months so it will not happen again.

A cleanup job will require cleaning whatever type of bag/container your vacuum uses as well as all hoses and brushes.
There are many useful sites that offer complete instructions as they provide information for several types of cleaners so you can find a site that offers info on your model of cleaner.
Because this can be a 'dirty' job, I believe this type of cleaning is better done outside when possible but can be done in the home.
Check these sites to see if your type of cleaner is described.
For specific instructions; Google your question using your brand and model of cleaner:

I have a Kenmore Canister vacuum that has a foam filter at the "air exhaust" area at the back end of the bag. I take it out regularly and wash it with warm soapy water, rinse it well and let dry completely. When I put it back in, I also put a new dryer sheet between the foam filter and the bag, so while vacuuming, the air exhausting from the vacuum cleaner carries the dryer sheet scent with it throughout the house. You could also do the same with a used dryer sheet with a few drops of an essential oil OR your favorite perfume.

Have you looked into buying replacement vacuum bags? Or is there a recommendation of how often it should be changed so it won't smell. I also use Baking Soda on Carpet as a Deodorizer. It is fairly inexpensive and lasts very long.
