This is a different style chest, but also Johnson Carper and French Provincial. The asking price is $499.

The dresser does not look to be in very good condition and good condition is what makes vintage furniture sell and also what brings in good money. I am assuming the damaged places on the top are where the "new" paint is coming off?

  • Most of the time, painting is the worst possible thing you can do to vintage/antique furniture. Refurbishing generally always reduces the value by half or more and makes it difficult to sell. And a messed up paint job could make it impossible to sell - or to sell for more than $50-$75.
  • I believe the only people who might be interested in your dresser would be a furniture re-finisher/shop owner that thinks they can make some money by completely redoing it or someone who really needs drawer space and does not care very much about the looks.
  • Your dresser is the smaller size and would probably sell for $300-$400 if it was in good condition.
  • Here are a couple of links to similar dressers (not necessarily Johnson Carper) so you can see the similar style. This does not mean these will sell for the listed price (or any price). These dressers are in pretty good condition but not spotless. Also, these items are for local pick up only as they would be too costly to ship which means the sale may also depend on the size of city the dresser is located in.

  • Here is a link that shows a similar dresser (larger dresser with mirror) sold in 2015 but probably pretty much the same today.

  • If you are interested in selling your dresser, I would suggest you list it on your local sale sites; Craigslist, IOffer, LetGo, 4Sale, etc.
  • You could start the price at $150 and see if anyone is interested as you can always reduce the price if necessary.
  • Good luck, I hope it is worth a lot more.

Thank you so much for your information. My neighbor was throwing this away! Somebody painted it at one time and the top was chipping as on some of the drawers. Since I posted this, I got some paint remover and removed the paint from the top.

It is in perfect condition. I am in the process of refinishing it now, since it has been painted before. Thanks again!

What a bargain! These are so well made that it is very difficult to find anything close in comparison for less than several thousand dollars.

I hope it is something you are going to keep but if you do a good job with the paint (gold trim?) you should be able to sell it for several hundred dollars if you put it up for sale in your area.

I wanted a set like this in the worst way when I was young. It sat in the Sears show room and had a pink fluffy bed spread and a giant teddy bear leaning on the headboard on the demo bed. The bed had a canopy which to a 6 year old me screamed must have near-oooooooo. I hadn't thought about that in decades! Thanks for the memory!

Here is some info on the company:

As for value, that is a tough one as there are no exact matches listed or sold lately. I only go by sold and use exact matches including condition matches to set value. Never use asking price to value something as people can ask the world, but if no one will pay for it it is valueless.

Ebay, Etsy and online auction houses often carry these mid century modern beauties, so if you are so inclined, you can do regular searches to look for actual sold amounts to try to determine value of your piece if you are planning on selling. If insuring, talk to your agent to see if he/she has any input or wants a certified appraisal. Thanks for sharing!!! You made my day with the memory!

I love it that you found it and saved it!!! So cool!!!

Some of my favorite pieces have been rescued in the same way!

My hubby's night table was such a rescue. It was painted a vile lime chipped up green. It looked pathetic in the trash, but I liked the lines of it and scooped it up.

When I stripped it down, it was an amazing dark mahogany wood with true tones and grains (after a little TLC)!

Today, I am sad I never did before and after photos (this was long before cell phones and back then photo developing was expensive).

Please post the after so we can see it!! Thanks again for sharing!!
